CAMPAIGN & FUNDRAISING UPDATE - February 2012 Selected gifts representing private support for one of Eastern Washington University 's key fundraising priorities - Student Success, Community Engagement, Research and Creative Activity, Facilities, Endowed Scholarships Dr Allan Scholz - $100,000 bequest to the Milo G. Thatcher Fund Dr. Scholz is a biology professor at EWU. He teaches courses in Ichthyology and General Biology, however his true passion is natural wildlife resources and fisheries biology. He is also the departmental advisor for aquatics and environmental biology. In 2009 Dr. Scholz co-authored the Field Guide to the Fishes of Eastern Washington with Holly McLellan, research associate in the EWU Fisheries Department. Covering 39 native species, 43 introduced fishes, and eight rare fishes, the 310-page book provides complete reference for readers about fish species in eastern Washington waters. Dr. Scholz s bequest of $100,000 is to establish a fellowship in honor of Milo G Thatcher who was among the first students to graduate from the fisheries biology program. He went on to a successful career working for the Spokane Tribe as a fisheries biologist. Milo passed away in 1993 of unknown causes. The Milo G. Thatcher fellowship is for a student, preferably from the surrounding eastern Washington and Idaho Native American tribes, with an interest in Natural Resource Management, primarily Fisheries and Wildlife. The scholarship is intended to encourage pursuit of a professional career in the field. James and Stacey Weddle - $25,000 gift to Cyprus Archeological Research James (managing partner, Edward Jones in St. Louis, Missouri) and Stacey Weddle learned of Eastern s Archeological Research through their friends, Dan and Margaret Carper. Their son, Dusty Weddle, has joined the team for two consecutive digs (2010 and 2011), and will again in 2012. He has become an integral member of the team, accomplishing important survey work of the various dig sites. He is currently enrolled in Masters studies, and working at the Missouri History museum. This gift is the third gift of $25,000 received from the Weddles. Dr. Bonny Georgia Bazemore utilizes the funds for student travel, student housing and food, vehicle rental for field trips and excavation supplies. Welsh Family Foundation - $25,000 to the Garco Construction, Inc Endowment Tim and Jackie Welsh (BA '68) are part owners of Garco Construction which specializes in institutional and government work on sites across the country. The company contracts for industrial and commercial work, and excels at building and renovating schools as well as building military fueling facilities. This gift adds to the endowment established in August 2010. It demonstrates the Welsh s commitment to the support and success of its recipients with the hope they will in turn strengthen their communities. The Garco Construction Scholarship Endowment will provide financial support to students in the College of Business and Public Administration who demonstrate commendable academic achievement, community service, leadership and management experience. the campaign for Eastern 3
