August 28, 2016 Parish Bulletin Issue 27 Volume XLVIII ST. ALOYSIUS CATHOLIC CHURCH 2025 Stuart Avenue Baton Rouge, Louisiana 70808-3979 (225) 343-6657 Fax (225) 344-6847 Website: www.aloysius.org Daily Prayer for My Vocation Loving and Merciful Father in Heaven, Send your blessings and grace on me as I deepen my relationship with you and Your Son, Jesus Christ. Open my heart to Your Love and Understanding and my mind to Your Truth and Desires. I ask this through Christ our Lord with the Holy Spirit. AMEN What is God calling you to be/do? What will it take for you to achieve that call? What gifts do I have or need to develop? RCIA for Children - RCIA for children is a ministry for those preparing for membership in the Church through the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults. This process is for children, ages seven (7) and over who have not been baptized Catholic, or have been baptized Catholic but did not receive their first Reconciliation and Eucharist in the second grade as well as for children who were baptized in another faith and wish to become Catholic. We would like to begin this process by mid-september. We are in need of catechists to help in the preparation of the children as well as in preparing the parents of the children. We will provide you with the training and the materials. For more information, please contact Tricia Greely at (225) 343-6657 or at tgreely@staloysiusparish.com. Special Collection - There will be a special second collection this weekend August 27/28 to aid our Diocese in responding to the massive flooding within our own Diocese. Monetary donations are critically needed to allow us to respond to the immediate needs of our parishes, schools and flood victims. Every parish community has differing needs and cash donations allow us to specifically address the varying needs. Please make checks payable to the Diocese of Baton Rouge, reference Disaster Assistance Fund in the memo section. St. Aloysius Wine & Food Tasting A Tour of the Iberian Peninsula (Spain and Portugal) has been postponed. Please watch the Bulletin for rescheduling. August 28, 2016 22nd Sunday of Ordinary

Dear friends, Our Challenge The wise man who wrote the book of Sirach understood the strength that comes with humility. Considerate behavior toward others will give you greater satisfaction than giving extravagant gifts. We will never be ready for new challenges and more meaningful experiences until we are open to new ways of thinking and seeing. St. Paul encouraged his converts to let go of their past sin and guilt. He reminded them that they had been called to live in liberty because Christ had set them free from the inferior views of the past. Christ had reconciled them to God and to one another through his own redeeming love. Jesus response to every situation was exceptional. As he was walking into the hands of his enemies, he was battling old prejudices that separated one religion from another. Far from wanting to call down vengeance on his enemies, Jesus held out the hand of forgiveness and reconciliation. We often assume that our faith only makes heroic demands and only honors extraordinary deeds. To be sure, there are times when we must confront terrible evils and make great sacrifices. But being faithful also involves simply living truthfully and practicing the smaller virtues in life. If we can live quietly and love the neighbor we will experience real strength within ourselves. Putting first things first unusually means letting go of certain hurts and the satisfaction of getting even. Retaliation and vengeance are primitive emotions that Jesus condemned in no uncertain terms. Christ calls us to the holy work of reconciliation. To err is human, to forgive is divine. This is a truth that cannot be fully appreciated until we have tried to forgive and forget some past injustice or wound. Fortunately for us, when God forgives He also forgets; unfortunately for us, as humans, we can forgive but are not wired to forget. Nonetheless, Jesus has taught us that an unforgiving heart cannot receive forgiveness. We seal ourselves in our own sins when we seal ourselves off from the sins of others. Extending forgiveness helps us to receive it. Humble, self-giving love strengthens us. Have a good week! Love and prayers, Father Randy PARISH STAFF Parish Office: 343-6657 Fr. Randy M. Important Information for Working with Youth The youth ministries at St. Aloysius provide programs for our children in a faith-based environment. Implementing and coordinating the ministries require a significant number of adult volunteers. For the safety and protection of the children, adults working with minors must be certified under the requirements of the Child Protection Policy for the Diocese of Baton Rouge before they may serve with minors. The training is on-line and takes approximately 30-40 minutes to complete. Did you previously complete the child protection training? There are new requirements and anyone who completed the training prior to April 2012 must complete new training. For information on becoming certified or to find out if you need to complete the new training, contact Connie Planche in the Parish Office, 343-6657 or cplanche@staloysiusparish.com. Prayer Shawl Ministry The St. Aloysius Prayer Shawl Ministry, through the fellowship and handiwork of its members, offers prayerfully created and blessed shawls for anyone going through an illness, loss, or in some way in need of special comfort and healing. If you know of someone in need of a shawl, they are available in the parish office. If you have a yarn stash you would like to share with us, donations are gladly accepted. If you wish to go out and purchase new yarn, please purchase 4-5 skeins (or approx. 740-1000 yards) of the same color/ dye lot of soft, washable yarn. Some of our favorite kinds of yarn for shawl making are Lion brand Homespun and Caron Simply Soft. All are welcome to join at any time. You don t need to know how to knit or crochet; we will teach you. We meet every first and third Thursday of the month, 8:30 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. in the Parish Office Atrium. All Pre-K through 2nd grade children are invited to attend Children s Church beginning on September 11, 2016. Classes are held on most Sundays in the media center during the 9:00 and 11:00 a.m. masses. Children will come to mass with their family and will be dismissed by the priest after a special blessing just before the Liturgy of the Word and will return just before the consecration. Children s Church is for Pre-K through 2nd grade only. No pre-registration is necessary. Volunteers are needed to teach the lessons each week, as well as to assist with the supervision of the children. We also need a volunteer at each Mass to lead the music in the Liturgy of the Word. This is a great opportunity for adults and middle school/high school youth to help these eager youngsters learn the Word of the Lord. Children s Church will take the place of Sunday School (which was previously offered to PreK and K students). Adult volunteers must meet the Child Protection requirements. To volunteer with this new ministry, please sign up at signup.com/go/h94tzf. The link can also be found on the Parish s Facebook page. Please contact Tricia Greely at 343-6657 or tgreely@staloysiusparish.com if you have any questions. Volunteers for Holy Smoke Needed! You will have fun and it will be delicious! Holy Smoke needs volunteers to help out the day of the cook-off on Saturday, September 24th. To volunteer, please email Linsey Sutton linseymsutton@gmail.com. Volunteers get a free T-Shirt!!
