Statements & Search Criteria Mission The J.O.B.S. Program mission is to provide 8th and 9th grade students in the City of Hopewell and Prince George County with training in workforce readiness, life skills, character education, and wellness. Background Dr. Terrence Allen, prevention specialist for District 19 CSB, and Mr. John Weigel, Director of 6th Judicial District Court Service Unit, created The Job Opportunity Basic Skills (J.O.B.S.) Program in June 2005. These two collaborated with local businessmen, area agencies, and school representatives to bring the idea to fruition. The program was adopted by the Hopewell-Prince George (HPG) Chamber of Commerce in the summer of 2007 as a means for positively influencing workforce development by reaching our youth during their impressionable years and by working seamlessly in the public schools. The J.O.B.S. Program uses community business leaders to teach basic job skills to students in an after-school classroom setting. Interested students fill out an application, provide written recommendations, and receive parental/guardian permission. Students attend classes on a weekly basis. There are four classes, two at N.B. Clements Jr. High School, one at Hopewell High School and one at Carter G. Woodson Middle School. Each classroom has a classroom partner, but the lessons are taught by leaders from the business community. The curriculum is based on the Job Ready! Manual developed for the Boys and Girls Clubs of America and Life Inc. from the Deloitte Foundation. The curriculum is divided into three major areas: business conduct, communication, and getting a job. The students learn about subjects including: ethics, teamwork, appropriate business appearance, responsibility, time managements, verbal and written communication, internet safety, listening and non-verbal communication, proper listening skills, conflict resolution, networking and volunteering, interviewing skills, application and letter writing, healthy employees, S.T.E.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), making career choices, and managing money. The J.O.B.S. Program is offered to students in the 8th and 9th grade between the ages of 14 and 16 years old. Classroom partners follow guidelines provided by the advisory board to select eligible students from three local schools. The program originally served 10 students, and has grown to accept 60-80 students into the program each year. Students are selected on their potential to complete the program. Because the program requires a significant time commitment, many students who participate in other after school activities are not able to participate in the JOBS Program. Unintentionally, we have attracted many lower income and disadvantaged youth who are initially motivated for financial reasons. Impact The J.O.B.S. Program is striving for continued development of our program and curriculum during the 2011-2012 school year. We are working to expand our curriculum to encompass even more areas and skills necessary for the youth of today to become a well prepared, competitive workforce of tomorrow. This year we have developed and included into the curriculum a class on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). This is in response to the local and national need for skilled workers in these fields as well as the feedback that students need to increase their comfort level and exposure to these areas. We also included a weekly mini-lesson on important aspects of being a "Healthy Employee." This was in response to student feedback asking for more knowledge in this area, as well as the responsibility we have to teach students to better take care of themselves for increased health and productivity at work and in life. This year, we are also striving to improve our financial independence by securing adequate funding for students to have hands on job experiences through paid internships and pay for a part time coordinator. Our goals this year also include working on program evaluation, strategic planning, and a communications plan. During the 2010-2011 school year, The J.O.B.S. Program accomplished several new goals. We added a mock interview class to the curriculum to help train students in communication and job acquiring skills, and gave them valuable experience preparing for and participating in a job interview. Many of the local employers who would later hire students for their summer internship experiences came into the classes and conducted interviews with each student, giving them a taste of a real interview. This also served as another way to evaluate student progress. Another accomplishment this year was an improved communication between The J.O.B.S. Program and its supporting fiscal agent, the Hopewell Public School Foundation. This led to improved financial reports. We also improved our support and interaction with the summer internship employers by providing an employment guide to assist in employing and serving the students. 2
