Please help me welcome the following students and their families: Brantley F. (PreSchool), and Wyatt S. (PreK). We would also like to welcome back Tinley B. who is rejoining the 1st grade class. January is filled with a variety of events that are very important in the Catholic Elementary School experience. From Wednesday 1/17 Sunday 1/21 our 8 th graders will be traveling to Washington DC for the March For Life. The annual School Choice Event will occur on Tuesday 1/23/18. Our 6 th graders will join 6 th graders from all the Springfield Catholic Schools at BSS. St. Aloysius will serve as the host for a traditional event, Third Graders in Faith (TGIF) on Friday 1/26/18. The month ends with a very special week long series of instructional, entertaining, and faith strengthening events better known as Catholic Schools Week, Sunday 1/28 through Friday 2/3. We look forward to these events and the opportunity to grow our spirituality. Report cards were sent home on Friday. Please sign the envelope and return it to the school. Service Hour Update: A slip will be sent home soon to update you on our recorded service hours for your family. If the hours are not current, please turn in a service slip to Deann Reavis so they can be recorded and correctly updated. You must fill out a slip for service hours worked if you would like them applied. We are aware that hours have been worked for coaching, concessions, Bingo, etc. that have not yet been turned in. For service hours not completed, a fee of 50.00 per hour will be assessed and billed in May of this year. There are still many opportunities coming up to complete service hours! Look for information on Spaghetti Dinner and Dinner Auction! There are also many opportunities through the sports program for gate and concessions. Of course, we are always in need of help for Saturday Bingo this is a great way to fulfill your service hour requirement and it is a great help to the school! SAVE THE DATE: St. Aloysius Spaghetti Dinner will be held on Sunday, February 18th! It is a north-end, St. Al's tradition! Next week, your student will bring home 5 tickets to purchase/sell. Remember that these tickets are mandatory for grades K-8. Please return money in your envelope marked Spaghetti Dinner. Additional tickets are available in the office! This is a major fundraiser that directly benefits our school! Thank you for your efforts in selling these tickets. St. Aloysius Skate Night: Dust off your roller skates and bring your children to Skateland South!! Monday, January 15th, 4:30-6:30 pm. Help us promote active lifestyles along with positive family involvement!! Please join us for this exciting fundraising opportunity for our school! We hope to see you there!!

The St. Ursula Award for Academics was presented to the National Junior Honor Society. This group of students places a high level of importance on academic achievement. The bar is set high and they reach it! Not only do they achieve high standards in academics, they also participate in other activities such as arts, sports, and church functions. Music News: Parents of 6th, 7th and 8th graders - We have started a project and we need your help. Your student is going to compare/contrast the style/artist of a group that they like. They also are to discuss with you the type style/artist that you liked when you were their age. In addition, they are to talk to their grandparents (or someone else of that age) and discuss the type style/artist that they liked when they were the age of your student. The student is to write a paper comparing/contrasting the 3 different styles. The week before Spring Break the students will make a presentation using the information they have gathered. Hopefully they will be able to incorporate some tapes, videos, etc. in their presentation. It will be interesting to see if the students know what a 45 is or even an 8 track!!! Feel free to contact me if you have any questions! Mr. Martin - lynn.martin@saintaloysius.org Bingo: Don t forget to join us for bingo at Caritas Hall, 909 E Converse, on Saturday, January 20 (St. Aloysius School has bingo every Saturday ) at 10:45am for Early Bird, other games begin at noon. If you can volunteer to help out, contact Michele Hagele or the school office. Plan to play bingo during our times, help make this a fun and profitable activity for St. Aloysius School! Adult Volleyball: League play will begin on Sunday January 14. Teams will play every Sunday afternoon in the school gym. Cost is $60 per team. Checks can be made payable to St. Aloysius Boosters. Please contact Scott Dickerson at 217-652-4840 AD@saintaloysius.org 2018 Knights of Columbus Council #364 to Sponsor Youth Free Throw Championship: All boys and girls ages 9-14 are invited to participate in the 2018 Knights of Columbus Council 364 Free Throw Championship. The local competition will be held on Saturday, February 3, 2018 at Christ the King School Gym, located behind the school at 1920 Barberry. Registration begins at 2:00pm and competition at 2:30pm. There is no cost to enter. (All participants are required to furnish proof of age and written parental consent. Age eligibility is determined by the contestant as of January 1, 2018.) For additional information and copy of a registration form contact: Mike Stead at mstead.1@att. Net or 217-415-6207 Other Info: In an effort to maintain a safe environment for students and staff here at St. Aloysius School, the Illinois Emergency Management Agency recently tested the radon levels in our gymnasium. Two instruments were placed in the gym from 12/18/17 to 12/22/17. This "short term" test resulted in levels of under 0.3 and 0.8 pci/l respectively. These levels are well below the 4.0 pci/l action level for indoor radon. The results demonstrate that the radon mitigation system installed during the late fall is working properly. Have a wonderful Week! Tom Weir Attached is the city tournament t-shirt form. Order forms are due by the end of the school day on Friday. Shirts will be delivered next week.
