MINUTES of August Membership Meeting Commander Rick Lange opened the meeting at 7:30 p.m. with 20 members present. Past Department Commander Dave Konz and Manager Ryan Brehmer was also present. Guest speaker, Sherry Morrow, fundraiser for the Hero Flight and WWII flights, shared her experiences and encouraged donations to the project. DONATIONS: Lee Meents made a motion to donate $200 for the Hero Flight. He passed a hat to collect money to collect donations. Ryan Brehmer will continue to accept donations for the Hero Flights. Thank you to all the Volunteers that support our Legion. A $25 donation was given to a 4-H organization. Veda Thomsen donated the Meadow Muffin prize money back to the Legion. The Jim Nutter family donated $500 in memorial money. The trees surrounding the Legion are in tough shape from the recent hail storm. MEETING MINUTES: Greg Brodine made a motion to accept the previous minutes as read by Adjutant John Arias; motion carried. FINANCE REPORT: The P&L reports are not ready. Ryan Brehmer shared balances of the Legion accounts at the Gibbon Exchange Bank. The Air Conditioner will be shipped to the Legion mid-august. Frank Spotanksi made a motion to accept the finance report as read; motion carried. MANAGER S REPORT: Ryan reported on the July and August events. The Membership Drive dinner will be held on Saturday, August 16. Bud Stall will be cooking a cream can supper. ADJUTANT S REPORT: 37 members have paid their 2015 membership. The July Lunch & Learn will be held tomorrow. Conceal/carry will be the topic on August 26. On Sunday, August 17, the Grand Island Veterans Home will host a BBQ. Volunteers are needed. VICE COMMANDER REPORT: The rifles at the cemetery need to be replaced. Lee Meents, Chet Morgan and Stacy Brown will serve on the rifle replacement committee. SERVICE OF- FICER REPORT: No report. SGT AT ARMS: Members present at the meeting donated $312 for the Korean Hero Flights. The July 4 parade was a success. Need volunteers to serve in the Honor Guard the first day of school at Gibbon, August 14. Support Our Troop signs are available for free. SAL LIAI- SON: No report. BASEBALL COMMITTEE: Randy Stocker will be providing a financial report at the conclusion of the season. Juniors were District Runner-ups and Seniors are playing in the third round of state tonight. UNFINISHED BUSI- NESS: Lee Meents has invited all Veterans to fish in at the lake on his property. NEW BUSINESS AND CORRESPOND- ENCE: The Gibbon Legion was recognized at the State Convention for 100% membership for 2014. GOOD OF THE OR- DER: August 25 will be the next membership meeting at 7:30 p.m. All Veterans get into the Nebraska State Fair in Grand Island for free on September 1. Delivered in September Proceeds support Veterans Programs Election to Exclude Military Retirement Pay from Income Tax Beginning July 18, 2014, certain military retirees may elect to exclude a portion of military retirement pay from Nebraska taxable income. The retire must make the one-time election, using the Election to Exclude Military Retirement Benefits, Form 1040N-MIL, within two years after his or her retirement from the uniformed service, and may elect: OPTION 1: To exclude 40% of his or her military retirement benefit income for seven consecutive taxable years, beginning with the year in which the election is made; OR OPTION 2: To exclude 15% of his or her military retirement benefit income for all taxable years, beginning with the year in which he or she turns 67 years of age. Although the election may be made beginning July 18, 2014, the exclusion is not available until tax year 2015. Additional information for military retirees is available at revenue.nebraska.gov. 5

Meadow Muffin Special thanks to Craig Schnitzler, Mike & Cricket Bell and Rick Lange who prepared the pen for the Meadow Muffin. Schnitzler painted the lines, Mike & Cricket brought over Buffy, the heifer, and Rick Lange supplied the fencing. After three hours of waiting, Buffy dropped in Veda Thompsen s square. Veda generously donated her prize back to the Gibbon Legion. The proceeds of the fundraiser will support the Gibbon Legion monthly newsletter. Thank you to everyone who supported the Meadow Muffin Fundraiser. From The Adjutant: John Arias The new membership year is upon us. If you haven t received your renewal notice, you soon will. I mailed 37 memberships in to the Department of Nebraska on Sunday. I received another 13 renewals since the General Membership meeting on Monday, Aug. 28 th. You may pay your membership at the Gibbon Legion. If you do not renew by September you will receive another renewal notice in October. I ve made flyers for the Membership Drive on August 16 and the Veterans Home Cookout in Grand Island on August 17. Please attend both of these events and to support our Veterans and the Legion. The State Fair will hold its Veterans Day Celebration Program on Monday, September 1, to honor ALL MILITARY SERVICE MEN and WOMEN who are serving and have served for our country, including a special recognition of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom Veterans. The program will be held in the Heartland Events Center at 9 a.m. The Gate admission is FREE all day for personnel with appropriate identification. (Example: Military ID, VA ID Card, VA Medical Card, Veterans Organization Membership Card, Discharge Papers, etc.) If you would like to order a Legion cap to wear for Legion events, please see Ryan or myself. July Lunch & Learn Recap Harley Amy, drug investigator with the Buffalo County Sheriff s Office (BCSO), spoke at the July Lunch & Learn: Drugs & Meth Labs. He is a UNK graduate and a veteran, having served in the United States Army. He joined the BCSO in 2004 as a road patrol deputy.
