Dr Koshal is very accomplished as noted in the following short biography. Dr. Koshal completed his M.B.B.S. (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery) in 1971 at Ravishankar University in Raipur, India. He received five gold medals and was awarded the Pfizer Gold medal in Medicine. In 1975 he obtained his M.S. (General Surgery) at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi and received a gold medal. He completed his cardiac surgery training at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute. In 1979 he went as a Canadian Heart Foundation Research Fellow to the Harvard Medical Centre in Boston. He joined the staff at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute in 1980. In Ottawa he was the Director of the Residents Training Program in Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery and also the Surgical Director of the Cardiac Transplant Program. He was a member of the team that performed the first total artificial heart implant (Jarvik) in Canada. Dr. Koshal performed the first implantation of Thoratec left ventricular assist device in Canada. In 1991, he moved to Edmonton to become the Director of the Division of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery at the University of Alberta and surgeon-in-chief, Cardiovascular Surgery at the University of Alberta Hospital. In 1995 he became the Regional Director of the Cardiac Sciences Program in Edmonton. In January 2006 he was named the Director of Development & External Affairs for the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute. He has numerous publications and presentations at national and international forums. In 1994 was awarded the Wilbert J. Keon Award for outstanding contribution to Canada in the field of cardiovascular medicine. In 1999 he was elected as the President of the Canadian Society of Cardiac Surgeons. He was awarded the Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal in 2003 and the Alberta Centennial Medal in 2006. During his time in Edmonton, the Cardiac Surgery Program at the University of Alberta Hospital has become one of the foremost in the country. It does the largest number of heart transplants in the country. It also has an outstanding Pediatric Cardiac Surgical Program and Resident Training Program for cardiac surgical trainees. The Cardiac Sciences Program at the University of Alberta Hospital, which Dr. Koshal has helped to initiate has become extremely successful on a regional basis. This encompasses all 5 hospitals that provide cardiac care in the city. Dr. Koshal envisioned and promoted the development of an outstanding Cardiac Institute in Edmonton. In 2001 the Government of Alberta recognized the Cardiac Sciences Program in Edmonton to be a Centre of Excellence in the Province. An initial sum of $125 million was allocated to develop the Alberta Heart Institute. The Government, buoyed by the generous contributions ($42 million) by the community in the province, added an extra $22 million to complete the project. Once completed (2009) it will be the foundation of one of the leading cardiac facilities in the world.

New Format for Rotary Luncheons Please visit our Sponsors. To place your ad click here. Club Site Sponsors This Thursday's luncheon will feature a new format. We will be having a buffet lunch rather than the plated lunches we have been used to. The new cost will be $23.50. It should be noted that the increase in cost is due in large part to increasing the gratuity for those who serve our club from 10% to the industry standard of 17%. This also means that when you arrive you may go to the buffet table to select those items you wish to have for lunch, select your table and begin eating lunch. The invocation will be offered once President Gord has called the meeting to order. This format has been used successfully at a number of larger Rotary Clubs. Please visit our Club Website Sponsors. To place your ad click here. Special Note to those who may have food allergies or sensitivities. The Westin will continue to meet your special needs. They ask that they be contacted three days in advance to they can have the appropriate meal available. Dickson Memorial Award by Muriel Dunnigan In 2002 Arch Dickson bequeathed some $200,000 to the Edmonton Rotary Club Foundation in order to further the work of the foundation. Arch Dickson and his father Sam Dickson had both been very pivotal members of the Rotary Club of Edmonton as well as long time contributing citizens of Edmonton. Sam Dickson, who had come to the Edmonton area at the turn of the last century, was on the organizing committee for and a charter member of the Rotary Club of Edmonton. His classification was Law - General Practice. Sam was a member of the first executive and the second president of the club. He authored the first set of bylaws for the club. Fort Edmonton Park owes its existence in part to Sam as he was part of a delegation to present the idea to Premier Manning. When the park did come to fruition with much financial assistance from the Rotary clubs, Sam was named honourary mayor of the park. Arch followed in his father's footsteps becoming an Edmonton Lawyer. He joined the Rotary Club of Edmonton in 1946 with the classification of Law - General Practise. He acted as legal advisor to the club for many years. Arch was actively involved in the Boy Scout organization throughout his life first as a member and then serving for many years on the district executive.

Page 3 of 5 The Dickson Memorial Paul Harris Fellowship was established in memory of the contribution these two men made not only to the Rotary Club of Edmonton but also to the city itself. It is presented annually to a non - Rotarian Edmontonian who is recognized as having contributed significantly to making Edmonton the dynamic, healthy city it is today and whose life reflects the principles of Rotary.
