It has been two months since I was elected Commandant of the detachment and I want to let you know, there IS a learning curve to this job. Thank you for your patience as I continue to try and accomplish the duties of Commandant. A beach friend said to me, "I know you were a Marine, but why the Marine Corps League, MCL? I quickly pointed out that I AM A MARINE! I earned it and nobody or anything can take it away from me. The MCL? Well, that is another story. I guess it is knowing that you are with individuals that have taken the same path and have completed what few have started. The times may have been different but the outcomes were always the same. Sitting on the deck at the beach party this past weekend a few members started talking about their adventures at PI and other bases. It was like it happened just the other day. You could feel the DI in your face, see the image of your foot locker being tossed in the center of your hut or out of the barracks. Yes, sitting on the deck, we all had smiles on our faces remembering those times. Camaraderie. WE have it! They don't. Telling war stories, helping kids with Toys for Tots, sending funds to a Marine Lt. in Japan, helping the VA hospital, or being theree when one of us has a problem. Yes, being a Marine and a member of the Marine Corps League is different. It is a brotherhood and I am proud to have you as brothers. Semper Fi

I got on a plane and flew to Atlanta, then I had to go Portland, Oregon. I had a great experience and learned a ton of things that are useful at your units. I learned how to teach, I learned teaching strategies to use in the Young Marine program and out of it. Some of my favorite classes that I had was them teaching us how to do a correct Physical Fitness Test, learned some more knowledge about the Young Marines, and learned more about myself in a more personal way. You make friends for a lifetime there. I made one of my best friends there that I will have forever. I went to ALS for 2 weeks. The first week was all about classes about being an advanced leader, talking about public speaking, physical fitness, map and compass and more. Some strategies that I learned was to never criticize, always be open, and know what they'ree talking about. The next week was all about teaching the other 2 leadership schools, Junior Leadership School (JLS) and Senior Leadership School (SLS). I taught Senior Leadership School. My favorite part about teaching SLS was me teaching the drill, and inspecting their uniforms. This was one of my most, or not the most memorable activity that I ve had in my 7 years in this program.
