Thetas New at L.S.U. Presentation of the charter, initiation of sixteen pledges, and an installation banquet were the highlights of activities surrounding the installation of Theta's Delta Kappa chapter, March 23, 1963 on the campus of Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, La. Hazel Lease, grand president, assisted by Mary Ackerman and Opal McCelvey, Grand Council members-at-large, Dorothy Vaaler, EST, and members of the Alpha Phi chapter at Newcomb conducted the initiation. Mary Ackerman was overall chairman as Council installation chairman. Those initiated are Marian Arrowsmith, Judithanne Brandau, Gloria Egbert, Charlotte Sherwood, Carey Tharp, Carolyn Walls, all of New Orleans, La.; Mary Ellen Levy, Virginia Hayden, Metairie, La. ; Anne Crowell, Alexandria, La.; Patricia Pippen, Jackson, Miss.; Libba Potter, Shreveport, La.; Gretchen Weigand, Westwego, La.; Georgianna Harrison, Eldorado, Ark.; Ann Mullins, Baton Rouge, La.; Janet Freeman, Morgan City, La.; Carol Vaughan, Tampa, Fla. All of this climaxed an effort which started with the colonization of the Delta Kappa chapter at L.S.U. on September 16, 1962 under the direction of two Grand Council representatives, Mary Ackerman and Mary Brandriff. Colonizers for the chapter were Jane Coulter, Alpha, De Pauw, and Jacqueline Hooker, Gamma Zeta, Connecticut. Also on hand to help were the nineteen members of the Baton Rouge Theta Alumrne Club plus the Newcomb Theta chapter which traveled from New Orleans in chartered buses to conduct rush. Thetas participating in the installation banquet, just a little over six months later, spoke with satisfaction of history-the colonization; spoke with pride of the present-the successful installation; and spoke with confidence and hope for the future-based on the strong background and aspirations of the new Thetas on campus. Main speaker at the installation banquet was Mrs. Gerald Fretman, L.S.U.'s assistant dean of women, while the vice-president of the university, Dr. Martin Woodin, brought greetings. Theta participants carrying out a Theta theme for the program included the welcome given by CP, District XII, Dorothy Whitehurst Heard, with the response from Gloria Egbert for the new chapter's pledge class. AP for District XII, Florence Aves Bland, spoke for the Theta founders, Opal McCelvey for service, while Ann Greer of Newcomb delivered the grace and 6 Kappa Alpha Theta Summer, 1963 8 Delta Kappa - Property Of Kappa Alpha Theta - Created on Mar 10, 2019

The presentation of the charter was an inspiring moment for all. The Loyalty Service was held in the chapter room on Friday night. On Sunday morning the room was the setting for the model chapter meeting after which the Thetas attended the University Methodist church. Climax of the festivities was a reception held on Sunday afternoon. Some three hundred persons called at French House on campus to welcome Delta Kappa of Kappa Alpha Theta. Baton Rouge alumnre responsible for the successful weekend were Joan Campbell Samuel, Alpha Gamma, Ohio State, chairman of installation; Helen Shaeffer Williams, Mu, Allegheny, marshal; Josephine Nash Taylor, Alpha Theta, Texas, banquet chairman; Carolyn Neal Simpson, Alpha Theta, reception chairman; Dorothy Koush Appleby, Beta Phi, Penn State, alumrne club president; Martha Jewett O'Rourk, Beta, Indiana, chairman, Advisory Board. Perhaps it is significant that of these local alurnnre participating, only two are from the same chapter.
