Solutions for Critical Raw Materials Under Extreme Conditions (CRM-EXTREME) Maria Letizia Ruello (IT) Chair Working Groups meeting, Ancona, 17 June 2016 COST is supported by the EU Framework Programme Horizon 2020
Well come - a small piece of history in these walls This building was a military barrack. During the last war a lot of Italian soldiers were prisoners here, when the Nazists occupied the city. The most of them were sent in Germany, but a lot of them were liberated thank the generous courage of a woman that worked in the barrack as dressmaker. Her name was Alda RENZI-LAUSDEI. Thanks to her job, Alda was free to enter in the barrack with plenty of civil dresses. Furthermore she knew small passages and doors of communication with the external. With the help of other common people of the neighbourhood a lot of prisoners could escape. Few weeks later, Alda died with other seven hundred people under the US air force bombs. The people of Ancona has a piece of his tragic history in this place. I have also a piece of my family. Alda was my great grandmother.
3. Action Strategy for the achievement of the Grant Period Goals CRM-EXTREME establishes its goals on the COST Action policies... and makes them specific from the scientific and technological point of view
CRM-EXTREME Action Objectives Challenge focus on the substitution of CRMs in high value alloys and metal-matrix composites used under extreme conditions, in Energy, Transportation and Machinery manufacturing industries, and to set up a network of expertise in multi-scale modelling, synthesis, characterization, engineering design and recycling to find viable alternatives to CRMs
CRM-EXTREME Action Objectives Research Coordination 1. Implement the successful integration of fundamental and applied research addressing the substitution of CRMs in high value alloys and metal-matrix composites used under extreme conditions in vital productive sectors such as Energy, Aerospace, Automotive, and Machinery manufacturing industry. 2. Establish a multi-disciplinary, collaborative novel network of EU scientists, engineers, and industrialists. 3. Harmonize the industrial needs and research actions, and ensure the impact and valorisation of scientific progress into the selected industrial Value Chains (VC) and beyond.
CRM-EXTREME Action Objectives Research Coordination 4. Understand the role of CRMs in high-tech materials used in extreme conditions, thus ranking major applications to best direct the Action efforts. 5. Design of a novel microstructure with reduced or without CRMs and design of related processing techniques with thermodynamic and kinetic models and experimental approach considering the full material life-cycle. 6. Industrial validation: production of test series of novel materials, large scale testing in industry, optimization of production technologies. 7. Assessment of the Value Chain impact environmental and economic.
CRM-EXTREME Action Objectives Capacity Building 1. To give efficacy to the research efforts of the participants giving them new links and facilities, fostering knowledge exchange and improving chances for successful EU projects. 2. Smoothen the process of development of independent careers of Early Career Investigators (ECI), providing opportunities for networking, training and growing management skills. 3. To promote a long-term improvement of inclusiveness and gender balance in this particular EU scientific and technological field and to improve career prospects of researchers who decide to combine a challenging research career with a family.
