INNOVATION AND EXCELLENCE AWARDS GUIDELINES PART 1: Overview 1.1 INTRODUCTION The Waste Management Association of Australia s (WMAA) National Landfill & Transfer Stations Innovation and Excellence Awards were established in 2007 to showcase the best that landfills and transfer stations have to offer. The awards are open to all landfills and transfer stations, with the purpose of applauding sites that are exceptional and encourage best practice. The winners will be announced during the 2019 Australian Landfill & Transfer Stations Conference Dinner in Brisbane on Wednesday, 27 March. 1.2 OBJECTIVES Innovation Awards This category was introduced to recognise demonstrated innovation in individual aspects of facility design, management, operation or performance. Excellence Awards This category aims to recognise operators whose facilities demonstrate excellence against the following criteria: Environmental management and controls Resource recovery and waste minimisation (Transfer Stations) OR planning, design and construction (Landfills) Public/community acceptance and appearance Operation, training and management practices Creativity and continuous improvement Categories Innovation Landfill Transfer Station Excellence Landfill Transfer Station Page 1 of 6

All previous applicants are eligible to submit a nomination, subject to demonstration, to the satisfaction of the judges that improvements have been made since the previous nomination. Projects/facilities are allowed one (1) submission across both categories. Nominations The awards process will consist of three (3) stages: 1 - Submit your application online using the pro forma template 2 - Projects/facilities shortlisted will be visited by judges and assessed against criteria 3 - Three (3) minute presentation/video by each finalist to be given during the Conference Dinner on Wednesday, 27 March 2019 PART 2: Assessment Process 2.1 TIMEFRAMES Applications open mid-september and close late October, with site visits to be held in November 2018 and Finalists announced January 2019. Finalist presentations take place on Wednesday, 27 March 2019. 2.2 JUDGING PANEL The judging panel is formed by a panel selected by WMAA from a public call for judges, and comprises of: a convenor; up to three (3) experienced representatives from within the waste and resource recovery sector. In determining a recipient s eligibility to receive an award, the judging panel may: consider the contribution the nominee made to the facility or innovation have regard to the standard set by prior award recipients consider both the local requirements and best practice conclude the nomination should be judged under another category. Judges are not required to confer an award in each category. The decision of the judges is final. 2.3 JUDGING CRITERIA Please refer to Attachment 1 (Innovation Awards) and Attachment 2 (Excellence Awards) for detailed judging criteria. 2.4 FINALISTS The judges will assess all entries and ascertain a shortlist of finalists. Following the selection process representatives from the judging panel will undertake verification by visiting the sites to complete their assessment. The judging panel will then meet to determine the award winner(s). A shortlist of finalists will be announced in January 2019. PART 3: Nomination Process Nominations must be submitted online using the pro forma template, available via these links: Innovation Award Application Excellence Award Application The maximum number of pages per submission is five (5) pages (A4 size) plus the cover sheet. Additional supporting documentation including photographs/diagrams can accompany your submission again five (5) pages (A4 size) maximum. Page 2 of 6

Each submission should include: 1 - Award Category The award category must be indicated on the application. Categories include: Innovation o Landfill o Transfer Station Excellence o Landfill o Transfer Station 2- Company Details Include organisation s name, primary contact person and contact details, project s title, and when the project was completed. It is recommended that the primary contact be someone who is easily contactable. 3 - Company Profile A short paragraph outlining the primary role of the organisation is required and may be used for promotional purposes. 4 - Application Template Applicants must keep to the recommended page limit per submission which is five (5) pages (A4 size) plus the cover sheet. 5 - Attachments/Photographs Additional supporting documentation including photographs/diagrams can accompany your submission again five (5) pages (A4 size) maximum, making the total submission a maximum of ten (10) pages (A4 size) plus the cover sheet. Terms & Conditions Please ensure the Terms and Conditions section on the application form is ticked when submitting the nomination. ATTACHMENT 1: Innovation Awards Judging Criteria Nominations will be assessed against the following criteria (maximum score: 100 points) Key Criteria Example of how might be applied, but not be limited to 1 - Doing things better Significant WH&S improvement Application of practices from another sector resulting in significant benefits (where applicable) Design that led to considerable improvement in environmental and social performance of the site through measures above & beyond regulatory requirements Above & beyond improvements that are consistent with industry norms or business as usual at the time of award Weighting 2 - Fundamental Change Applicants must demonstrate a deeper understanding of waste and resource management practices and outcomes. Affects real, systemic change Represents an understanding of the core issues and works toward an improved and sustainable outcome Resolves a fundamental cost/efficiency/environmental or other issue Overcomes a substantial challenge to the effective operations of the facility 3 - Simplicity Demonstrates lateral and effective thinking towards the management of waste and recovery of relevant resources and processes Not unnecessarily complex 20 Points 4 - Execution Applicants must demonstrate that the research, implementation or execution were all evidence based and done well. Documentation provided showing that the innovation was well executed 5 - Adoptability Applicants must demonstrate the potential of the project to be adopted broadly and to change processes going forward - either small or large scale. Future enabler Has not been done before A simple innovation widely transferrable A large innovation that is a site-specific game changer or enabler 20 Points 6 - Sustainability Is or creates sustainable change Ticks the cost/quality/environment boxes Life cycle approach Resource recovery outcomes Page 4 of 6

Marketing of the facility Overall appearance of the site, noise, odour and litter management Compatibility and engagement with the surrounding community Possible job creation Discuss site landscaping Description of how the public is informed about the use of the transfer station 4 - Operations, Training and Management Description of signage and safety program Details of ISO 9001 or equivalent management system Employee WH&S, and environmental awareness and customer service training.
