Royals T h e U n i v e rs i t y o f S cr a n t o n Royals Annual Award Dinner Friday, May 6, 2011

HONOREE Peter A. Carlesimo (in memoriam) Peter A. Carlesimo, the first full-time executive director of the National Invitational Tournament (NIT) and longtime athletic director at The University of Scranton, was born in Newark, N.J., and was a 1940 graduate of Fordham University, where he played football with future coaching legend Vince Lombardi. He began his career as a history teacher and head football coach at his high school alma mater, St. Benedict s Prep in Newark, from 1940-42. Two years later, Carlesimo moved to Scranton, coaching football from 1944-60, basketball from 1944-46 and 1951-55, cross country from 1961-68, and was athletic director from 1953-68. Following his nearly 25 years at Scranton, Carlesimo returned to Fordham, where he was athletic director from 1968-78. While there, Carlesimo also served on the NIT committee, and when he left the university he became the NIT s first full-time executive director, holding the post from 1978-88. Carlesimo is often credited for keeping the NIT viable as the NCAA postseason tournament grew in prominence. The preseason NIT award is named in perpetuity in Carlesimo s honor. He is a member of The University of Scranton s Athletic Wall of Fame, the Jesuit Honor Society, the Fordham University Athletic Hall of Fame, the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame, St. Benedict s Hall of Fame and the NCAA Athletic Director s Hall of Fame. He received the John W. Bunn Lifetime Achievement Award, the highest award and most prestigious honor presented by the Basketball Hall of Fame outside of enshrinement. Carlesimo was known as a humorous speaker, having appeared at countless sports-related dinners and conferences, and was once a guest on The Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson. He and his wife, Lucy Rogan, of Olyphant, are the parents of 10 children. KEYNOTE SPEAKER P.J. Carlesimo P.J. Carlesimo has been a respected and successful basketball coach on several levels for more than three decades. During a five-year stint as lead assistant to head coach Greg Popovich, the Scranton native, Scranton Preparatory School graduate and son of honoree Peter Carlesimo helped guide the San Antonio Spurs to three NBA championships (2003, 2005 and 2007). After starring in three sports at Scranton Preparatory School, Carlesimo went on to become a 12-letter athlete at Fordham University. He began his coaching career on the collegiate level, first as an assistant at Fordham University before taking head coaching stints at New Hampshire College, Wagner College, and Seton Hall University. He spent 12 years at Seton Hall and led the 1987-88 Pirates into the NCAA tournament for the first time in school history. Just one year later, Carlesimo piloted his team to the NCAA championship game and was named NCAA Coach of the Year. In addition, he was twice named Big East Coach of the Year. During that time, Carlesimo also became well-known among the international ranks. He served as an assistant coach for USA Basketball s gold medal-winning Dream Team at the 1992 Olympic Games, the 1990 World Championships and the 1990 Goodwill Games. In 1994, Carlesimo made the jump to the professional ranks, serving as head coach in Portland, Golden State and Seattle/Oklahoma City. Currently, he is an assistant coach for the Toronto Raptors. He and his wife, Carolyn Hoffman, have two sons, Kyle and Casey.
