COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIP ENRICH Project Cooperation with Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital Viola Chan Baptist Oi Kwan Social Service 18 April 2009 1 Baptist Oi Kwan Social Service

... education is part of our culture, a way of life, and a way of helping people to be what they can be - good citizens, good workers and good people. Education,, therefore ought to be available to everyone, including people with mental ill.. To allow them to explore and discover more about themselves and the world around them. (Dougherty. Hastie. Bernard. Broadhurst.. and Marcus 1992.) 2

ENRICH Project ENRICH Project is a Lifelong Education Program for people who suffer from mental illness. It aims at facilitating those service users in developing an attitude of continuous self-improvement through life long education, so as to enable life mastery and improve quality of life. The program was first provided by Baptist Oi Kwan Social Service Institute of Cognitive Development for people with mental illness in 2002. The registered students from 2002 till Mar 2009 is1171 in total. 3

As these target groups are seen as ones who are either unable or have low motivation to take the initiative to attend classes themselves 257persons have participated in the outreaching program with Hospital during the period of January 2008 to January 2009 56 persons have participated in the Home based program during the period of April 2008 to Jan 2009 5

Scheme B - Structural Learning Service target: 400 ex-mentally ill persons living in the community (per year) Objective: to promote life long learning among ex-mentally ill persons. This scheme targets those ex-mentally ill persons aged 16 or above who are mentally stable and wish to pursue continuing education. Courses are offered on a semester basis, covering three main streams: psycho-socialcognitive, self-development and skills training. 6

Scheme B - Structural Learning The courses are designed to be diverse, interesting and practical. Therefore, an ex-mentally ill student can undertake a programme of courses to broaden his horizon, understand better the community he/she lives in and manage his/her life more effectively. The pedagogical strategies must emphasize not only acquisition of knowledge but more importantly capacity building. Courses are offered at substantially subsidized rate so that our students can afford to take our courses to enhance their lives through life long learning. 209 ex-mentally ill persons have enrolled in the structural learning courses during the period of Aug 2008 to Jan 2009 7

Scheme C - Mentorship Programme Service target: 60 mentors (per year) Objective: to train ex-mentally ill persons, their carers and community members to be the member of training team as a way of promoting social integration and developing human capital in the community. It is a platform for promoting volunteering. Ex-mentally ill persons, their carers and community members can become volunteer instructors. Special trainings are provided for the instructors to ensure they are equipped with basic knowledge in mental health and communication skills in dealing with ex-mentally ill persons. Greater acceptance towards mentally ill persons is expected through person-to-person interaction in the course of teaching and learning. This helps to promote social inclusion, a crucial objective in the Institute s development. 19 mentors have been trained in the Mentorship Programme during the period of Jan 2008 to Jan 2009 10

Scheme D - Self-learning Program & Partnership Program Service target: 200 ex-mentally ill persons (per year) Objective: to facilitate ex-mentally ill persons to develop an attitude of continuingly improving oneself through life long education so as to master their lives and raise quality of life A variety of formats of learning for students are provided. This allows students to choose their mode of learning, from structured classroom to distance learning. Web-based learning hub will be set up. Course materials and lectures will be available on the web. The web-site was launched in March 2009. Study clubs will be organized. It aims to foster an environment conducive to self-learning. Annual seminars with presentation from professional speakers will be organized to share with students on solving difficulties encountered and learning skills. Partnership courses with mainstream training institutions aiming at promoting continuing learning. 92 ex-mentally ill persons have enrolled in the self-learning program during the period of Feb 2008 to Jan 2009 11

Credit To encourage students having concrete study goals and systematic plans of study, credits are earned for the completion in each course. As a token of appreciation, progressive levels of certificates will be granted based on the number of credits earned. Every year, a graduation ceremony will be held to award certificates and scholarships and to honor those hardworking students. 12

Community Partnership Program ENRICH s Outreaching program Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital 13

Community Partnership Program Outreaching Program of ENRICH The Hospital-based program was started from January 2008. This program aims at locating and reaching out to people with mental illness who have limited social support ; and link up the patients to the existing community services. This program has cooperated with Outpatient Psychiatric Department; Psychiatric wards and Day Hospital of Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital, and make use of the venue in Hospital to organize a variety of programs and courses for the patients in the hospital. Through this outreaching program, the social workers of Baptist Oi Kwan Social Service would build up rapports with the patients, then the workers would be more easy to engage the patients in joining the existing community services. On the other hand, the allied health workers of hospital also organise the patients to visit the rehabilitation service of Baptist Oi Kwan Social Service in order to let the patients get more understanding about the real environment of the community services. 14
