UNSW Australia ZikaHACK 2016 Challenge Conditions of Entry By entering the UNSW Australia ZikaHACK 2016 Challenge described at https://goo.gl/a1criu you are agreeing to the following competition terms and conditions: 1. Competition Organiser The competition organiser is The University of New South Wales, ABN 57 195 873 179 of UNSW Sydney, NSW 2052, Australia ("UNSW Australia ) as represented by its Faculty of Medicine, School of Public Health and Community Medicine, NHMRC Centre for Research Excellence, Integrated Systems for Epidemic Response ( ISER ). 2. Who can enter? 2.1. Eligible Student Teams from any country can submit an application to enter this competition in accordance with these Conditions of Entry. Each Eligible Student Team must meet the following requirements: 2.1.1. Team has a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 6 enrolled university students (who must all be enrolled at the time of the Phase 1 Submission Date of 30 November 2016); 2.1.2. Team includes both undergraduate and postgraduate students; 2.1.3. Team includes students from the following two discipline areas: STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) and health related (medicine, nursing, public health, allied health) disciplines; 2.1.4. Each student must be studying at a registered university that is recognised within its country as a university; 2.1.5. Letter of support including verification of each student s status from university for each team member is attached to the application; 2.1.6. A one-page curriculum vitae for each team member is attached to the application; 2.1.7. Application is in English; 2.1.8. No team member has a direct connection with any investigator or affiliate of ISER (such as a student-supervisor relationship); 2.1.9. The work has been done entirely by the student team, with no other assistance; 2.1.10. All students have agreed to be named as part of the team and the team itself is given a name; 2.1.11. One student in each team has been nominated as the team leader and contact person for that team. The contact person must provide their phone, postal address and email address; and 1

2.1.12. The application coversheet, eligibility criteria checklist and declaration is completed and submitted with the application. 2.2. Incomplete applications will be deemed invalid and excluded from the competition. 2.3. Inappropriate, defamatory, racist or offensive entries will be deemed invalid and excluded from the competition. 2.4. UNSW Australia reserves the right, at any time, to request an entrant to produce appropriate documentation to verify the validity of entries and the eligibility of entrants and to disqualify any entrant who does not meet the eligibility criteria set out in this paragraph 2 or who submits an entry that is not in accordance with these Conditions of Entry. 2.5. All decisions about the eligibility of entrants and the validity of entries made by UNSW Australia will be final, and no correspondence will be entered into. 3. Competition theme and key dates 3.1. The theme of this competition is to develop a computer system/software tool to mine public domain information to detect the 2015 Zika outbreak faster than traditional surveillance methods using any technical platform of the applicant s choice (such as Python and R). The Eligible Student Team that develops the best tool will win AUD$15,000 and will have the opportunity to work with the Epiwatch team at ISER to further develop their concept. 3.2. The competition will consist of two phases: (i) shortlisting-concept design phase and (ii) product development phase. Shortlisted proposals will proceed to Phase 2 and have the opportunity to interact with the Epiwatch team at ISER team to further develop their ideas prior to product showcase and final demonstration in April 2017. 3.3. Key dates for the competition are: 3.3.1. Phase 1 proposal submission (Design Phase): 5pm, 30th November 2016 (Australian Eastern Daylight Time). 3.3.2. Phase 2 Shortlist notification to entrants: 15th December 2016. 3.3.3. Submission & Demonstration of Phase 2 Showcased Tools: April 2017. 3.3.4. Evaluation of Phase 2 Showcased Tools by Epiwatch team: May 2017. 4. How to enter 4.1. Eligible Student Teams can enter this competition by submitting a detailed proposal on their method and approach to solving the problem described in paragraph 3. Each team will also need to address the specific problem of capturing early signals for the Zika epidemic. Proposals will be judged and shortlisted on the basis of the quality of the submission and originality of the solution. The proposal must be written in English and not exceed 3,000 words. Proposals must be submitted in.doc,.docx, or.pdf file format. All proposals should be original work and will be checked for plagiarism by automated software. 4.2. All entries must be submitted via email to epiwatch-iser@unsw.edu.au by the Phase 1 Submission Date of 5pm, 30th November 2016 (Australian Eastern Daylight Time). 2

4.3. Entries not submitted by the Phase 1 Submission Date or not completed in accordance with these Conditions of Entry will not be valid entries and will not be eligible to progress to Phase 2 of this competition. 4.4. Phase 2 is open to shortlisted applicants ONLY. Successful applicants will be contacted by the Epiwatch team at ISER by 15th December 2016 with more details about their progression to Phase 2 of this competition. 4.5. During Phase 2, Eligible Student Teams will have the opportunity to interact & collaborate with the Epiwatch team at ISER to develop their solution. In this phase, each Eligible Student Team will (i) gather data relevant to the disease outbreak (ii) prepare and clean the data and (iii) design and utilize the algorithms to detect outbreaks from the data preparation step (ii) to create a Showcased Tool. 4.6. Eligible Student Teams must submit their Phase 2 Showcased Tool entry by a date in April 2017 and demonstrate it in a manner to be specified by the Epiwatch team at ISER. The Epiwatch team will evaluate all Phase 2 Showcased Tools in May 2017. 5. How to win the prize 5.1. This is a game of skill. Chance plays no part in determining the winner. There will be one prize winner only. The winning Phase 2 Showcased Tool entry will be decided by a panel of judges appointed in the sole discretion of UNSW Australia and the selection of the winning entry will be based on panel s assessment of: 5.1.1. The ability of the tool to identify disease outbreaks early (as measured against retrospective data from the Zika virus epidemic); 5.1.2. The quality of the test data submitted to the Epiwatch team; 5.1.3. The ease of use of the tool; 5.1.4. Clarity and transparency of the tool; 5.1.5. System documentation; and 5.1.6. Demonstrated multi-disciplinary approach to developing the tool. 5.2. The judges decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into. 5.3. The winning Eligible Student Team will receive the prize of AUD$15,000 in cash, to be paid by electronic funds transfer into a bank account nominated by the team leader. UNSW Australia will not be responsible for any currency conversion costs, bank fees or taxes which may be imposed on the electronic funds transfer. UNSW Australia will not be responsible for ensuring that all members of the winning team are distributed the prize funds, which is the sole responsibility of winning team members. 5.4. The winner will be announced in May 2017 on UNSW Australia s website linked at https://goo.gl/a1criu. Each entrant of the competition agrees to UNSW Australia making such announcements of their name as the winner if they are the winner of the competition. 6. Prize unavailability 6.1. In the event that for whatever reason, the prize described above is unavailable, UNSW Australia reserves the right to substitute for the unavailable prize a prize of equal or greater value. The prize is not transferable or exchangeable. 3

6.2. UNSW Australia s rights under these Conditions of Entry are subject to and limited by all applicable laws. 7. Unclaimed prizes In the event that any prize is not claimed by 30 June 2017, UNSW Australia reserves the right to award any unclaimed prize to another valid entry. The selection of an alternate valid entry will be determined in the sole discretion of UNSW Australia. In such circumstances, the new winner/s will be notified by email and announced via UNSW Australia s website. 8. Limitation of liability 8.1. In the case of the intervention of any outside act, circumstances or event which prevents or significantly hinders UNSW Australia s ability to proceed with the competition on the dates and in the manner described in these Conditions of Entry, including but not limited to vandalism, power failures, natural disasters, acts of God, civil unrest, strike, war, or act of terrorism, UNSW Australia may in its absolute discretion cancel the competition and UNSW Australia will have no liability to any entrant or any other person as a result of such cancellation. 8.2. UNSW Australia will not be liable for any misadventure, accident, injury, loss or claim (including but not limited to a claim for infringement of any copyright, trade mark or other intellectual property right, or any claim of a similar nature) that may occur as a result of an entrant s entry into the competition. 9. Intellectual Property 9.1. All entries in this competition remain the intellectual property of the entrants who are the members of the team submitting the entry in Phase 1 and Phase 2 of this competition. Any intellectual property developed by the Epiwatch team at ISER as part of their collaboration with Phase 2 shortlisted applicants will be owned by UNSW Australia. 9.2. By entering this competition, each entrant warrants to and for the benefit of UNSW Australia that their entry does not infringe the copyright, trade mark or other intellectual property rights of any person, and that their entry does not breach a contract with any person (including the terms of use of any website accessed by the entrant). Each entrant indemnifies UNSW Australia from and against all losses, claims, expenses, damages and liabilities (including, without limitation, any taxes, fees, costs, levies or other imposts) which arise out of any breach of this agreement with UNSW Australia by the entrant or any wilful, unlawful or negligent act or omission of the entrant. 9.3. By entering this competition, each entrant grants to UNSW Australia a perpetual, non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to use, reproduce, adapt and communicate to the public their entry, either in full or in part, for research, education, promotional and marketing purposes. 9.4. The competition prize winning team members will have the opportunity to negotiate an agreement with UNSW Australia for possible further collaboration with the Epiwatch team at ISER on the development of a 4

commercial product based on their Showcased Tool. UNSW Australia will use reasonable efforts to negotiate such an agreement but does not guarantee that such an agreement can be reached with the competition prize winning team members. 10. Privacy 10.1. UNSW Australia may collect, store and use personal information in order to conduct the competition and for related purposes referred to in paragraph 10.3 below, and may, for this purpose, disclose such information to third parties, including but not limited to agents, contractors, prize suppliers and, as required, to Australian regulatory authorities. 10.2. By entering the competition, each entrant is deemed to have expressly consented to the collection, storage, disclosure and use of their personal information for the purposes identified in these Conditions of Entry in accordance with the Privacy and Personal Information Protection Act 1998 (NSW) and all other applicable privacy legislation. 10.3. By entering the competition, each entrant acknowledges and agrees that UNSW Australia may, for an indefinite period, unless otherwise advised by the entrant in writing in accordance with paragraph 10.4, collect, store, disclose and use all personal information collected by UNSW Australia about the entrant in connection with this competition for promotional, marketing, publicity, research and profiling purposes.
