Are you a modern GP? YOUR GUIDE TO A CAREER WITH MODERN MEDICAL

WE RE PROUD OF OUR STANDING IN THE COMMUNITY AND OUR REPUTATION AS A QUALITY, SUSTAINABLE HEALTHCARE PROVIDER. 2 YOUR GUIDE TO A CAREER WITH MODERN MEDICAL

ABOUT ZENITAS HEALTHCARE In April 2016, Modern Medical joined Zenitas Healthcare, combining the local knowledge and community mindset upon which Modern Medical was founded, with the corporate infrastructure and capabilities of a large, multi-disciplinary healthcare organisation. With healthcare shifting away from the hospital setting, we believe that a community-based team approach is key to improving patient experiences and care. Today, Zenitas employs more than 1600 healthcare professionals across 55 sites delivering primary care, allied health and home care services to communities. Across Australia, we re proud of our standing in the community and our reputation as a quality, sustainable healthcare provider. Unsurprisingly, the values of Zenitas and Modern Medical are closely aligned. That is, every decision we make, both individually and as a company, is patient-centred and guided by the values of trust and respect, teamwork, excellence and innovation. and founder of Modern Medical Dr Todd Cameron has been a GP for more than 25 years. In a nutshell, we have the commercial and clinical acumen to understand what makes a successful healthcare business. On behalf of the Zenitas family, I warmly invite you to explore a career at Modern Medical and look forward to welcoming you to our team. Justin Walter Managing Director CEO Zenitas Healthcare At a Board level, Zenitas has roots in both business and healthcare. For example, my own healthcare career began nearly 30 years ago as a nurse. Similarly, our Executive Director

A MEMBER OF THE COMMUNITY SINCE 2003 Welcome to Modern Medical, a group of family medical centres providing quality general practice services. The first Modern Medical was established in Caroline Springs in 2003. Our intention was to create a family-friendly medical centre that served the local community. It needed to be a place where patients would feel safe and cared for as well as inspired towards better health. We designed the clinic to be warm and welcoming, and it also had to deliver on the functions and practicalities of general practice. As such, our trademark became providing purpose-built medical homes specifically designed to deliver on the diverse needs of community-based healthcare. We know it is critical to attend to the comfort and wellbeing of our patients and our clinical team. Modern Medical has expanded to include a broader team of GPs, practice nurses, practice managers, support staff, and allied and other specialist services across multiple locations. Our commitment to our local communities is to provide accessible, affordable medical services in a modern, safe and friendly environment. We have the privilege of serving some of Australia s most vibrant and culturally diverse suburbs. I warmly invite you to consider Modern Medical as your home and partner for the next part of your GP career. Dr Todd Cameron GP and founder of Modern Medical Our community reputation is central to everything we do. It stems from the relationships our GPs are able to build with their patients. We re constantly evolving to meet the needs of our local community. Dr Todd Cameron 4 YOUR GUIDE TO A CAREER WITH MODERN MEDICAL

OUR VALUES Patient-centred We deliver on our promises. We provide a quality experience. We provide a flexible and responsive service. We care. Trust and respect We listen. We communicate openly and honestly. We show respect for ourselves and one another. We value diversity. Teamwork We use a collaborative approach and have a shared focus. We understand our roles and are accountable to the team. We celebrate our achievements. Excellence So many of my colleagues here are accredited for GP training and student education. It s not only important for future GPs, but also ensures we re developing general practice as a specialist area. As GPs, we need to know a little bit about everything, so it s crucial that we re able to access other professionals with different skills and knowledge. With this in mind, Modern Medical Caroline Springs has been an important champion of small-group learning and educational meetings. Dr Jenny Maxwell Medical Director, Modern Medical Caroline Springs We are reliable and consistent. We develop talent and reward high performance. We bring passion, fun and energy to our work. We benchmark ourselves and continuously improve. Innovation We know that to achieve excellence we need new ideas. We continuously challenge the way things are done. We think outside of the square. We are solutions-focused.

DR JENNY MAXWELL EMBRACING FLEXIBILITY For Dr Jenny Maxwell, her first experience of Melbourne culture and community began with a three-week whistle-stop tour with the Scottish Fiddle Orchestra in 2003. At that time, she was studying medicine in Scotland, but Jenny fell in love with Melbourne and vowed that one day she would be back. A decade on, Jenny returned to Melbourne as a qualified GP to interview with five prospective clinics. One of the clinics was Modern Medical in Caroline Springs, which Jenny says stood out for a number of reasons. I met with Dr Todd Cameron and he described all the qualities I was looking for in a workplace. Modern Medical is very patient-centric, with a focus on excellence, innovation and teamwork. Although Caroline Springs is quite a large clinic, it immediately had the feel of a family clinic. Back in Scotland, Jenny had just been offered a partnership opportunity at the clinic where she had been practising for the previous two years. According to Jenny, there were multiple levels of complexity to her decision to relocate to Melbourne. In addition to leaving family and friends behind, I also had this great partnership opportunity back home. But after meeting with Todd and the team, it all felt right, so we got the paperwork in motion as soon as I got back to Scotland. I started at Modern Medical in July 2014 and I haven t looked back. Within a year of joining the Modern Medical team, Jenny was promoted to Medical Director at Caroline Springs a role described to her as a natural progression. Jenny says, I have always strived for clinical excellence and ultimately, to provide my patients with bestpractice care. So I jumped at the opportunity to step into the role of Medical Director and to become more actively involved in helping to lead the practice in these areas. In this role, Jenny has maintained her clinical practice, rolling the clinical and non-clinical elements into a four-day week. She says this is made possible by the incredible flexibility shown by Modern Medical, and the fantastic ongoing support she receives from the clinic s practice managers and administrative team. 8 YOUR GUIDE TO A CAREER WITH MODERN MEDICAL

Similarly, Jenny says she felt very comfortable in her decision to return from maternity leave by working three days per week initially, and then gradually building her hours back up over time. We have quite a mix of working hours and our GPs have flexibility in their workday, whether it s a morning break or longer lunch. Some of our GPs start earlier, while others finish later. On the daily realities of working at Caroline Springs, Jenny says that Modern Medical provides everything a GP could possibly need. It s a modern, purpose-built facility with excellent consulting rooms and a lovely, big lunch room where staff members can and do come together it s a highlight! Our GPs and patients have access to onsite allied health and pathology services, and there are physiotherapy and radiology clinics within the same complex. For GPs requiring support for procedural consultations, we have a large and experienced nursing team on hand. It s like a one-stop-shop we can refer our patients and they are seen by the next day. Based on personal experience, Jenny knows it can be difficult to choose a clinic, but she has never doubted her decision to join Modern Medical. For any GPs interested in joining the team, she says that having aligned values is important. Our GPs are very focused on looking after their patients and providing an excellent quality of care. We don t just quote our values for promotional purposes. It s actually very refreshing to be part of a clinic where everyone is striving for the same things.

DR FARRUKH TUFAIL GROWING A DIVERSE PRACTICE On finishing his Fellowship training with the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM), Dr Farrukh Tufail was looking to join a GP clinic where he could pursue his special interest in skin cancer surgery. Prior to qualifying as a GP, Farrukh worked for a number of years in the acute hospital setting while completing advanced surgical training at the Austin Hospital and a Certificate in Emergency Medicine with Ballarat Health Services. With a young son and daughter at home, Farrukh saw Modern Medical as an attractive opportunity to further his skin cancer practice, while also maintaining a good work-life balance. I started at Modern Medical in September 2017, initially practising two or three days per week. Now I m practising full-time over four days, while also completing my Fellowship with the Skin Cancer College. It s a great working environment and a good patient cohort, which has really helped me to grow my practice and work towards completing my Fellowship. From the outset, Farrukh says he felt very supported by the Modern Medical team. When I first contacted Dr Todd Cameron, he was really encouraging and that gave me a lot of confidence when I started at the clinic. The practice managers have also been helpful getting everything set up and running smoothly. I m now fully booked. A local resident himself in Melbourne s Western suburbs, Farrukh enjoys the diversity and sense of community that comes with working in Caroline Springs. I speak Urdu, Arabic, Hindi, Punjabi and English, which helps me to communicate with my patients. When they feel comfortable and language isn t a barrier, it can really help to establish a clearer patient history and management plan. According to Farrukh, this diversity also translates into a range of interesting and challenging cases. From one day to the next, I could be perfoming anything from a simple biopsy to more complicated surgery, such as grafting or skin flaps. Our theatres are fully equipped, with dedicated nurses and reception staff, so I get exposure to cases I wouldn t see at other GP clinics. 10 YOUR GUIDE TO A CAREER WITH MODERN MEDICAL

Additionally, Farrukh says that having modern, well-appointed facilities benefits his patients. If a patient comes in with a suspicious lesion, I can perform a biopsy immediately. It provides patient reassurance and it gives me relief that we can get answers quickly and move forward. At Caroline Springs, an organised CPD program provides a convenient opportunity for Farrukh to discuss complex cases or procedures with visiting clinicians. He says it also allows him to accrue CPD points while staying in the local area. Each month, the clinic organises a small-group learning activity usually a meeting, journal club or presentation from a specialist. I also attend my own courses to keep up to date, so I find the CPD process quite simple. Looking ahead, Farrukh plans to continue building up his skin cancer practice with the support of Modern Medical. Initially, Farrukh was offered the opportunity to split his hours between the Caroline Springs and Spotswood clinics, an option he may revisit once his son and daughter are a little older. For Farrukh, choosing the right GP clinic comes down to two key factors: a high-quality practice and job satisfaction. On this basis, he strongly recommends Modern Medical to any GP seeking these qualities in a new practice. Put simply, Farrukh says: It s just a great place to work.
