San Benito County 4-H Updates May 15 th, 2015 4-H Updates 1. Council Budget 2015-2016 Meeting this Sunday A meeting for the 2015-2016 Budget and Calendar will be held on Sunday, May 17th from 1:00 3:00 pm at the 4H Conference Room. All are welcome to attend. Committees should review their budgets and advise us of any special needs for their group for the 2015-2016 year. These can be sent to Emily Whitely at the 4H office - emcwhiteley@ucanr.edu. If you have questions please contact Lois Pape at 831-801-6368. 2. Council Meeting and Scholarship Celebration Monday night Come join us at 6:30 at the Vets Hall on Monday night to celebrate our scholarship recipients! The scholarships will be announced before the Council meeting. The Council meeting will be at 7:00. Please review the agenda below and email Emily (emcwhiteley@ucanr.edu) by 12:00 on Monday if you have any additions. 3. Farm Cleanup Days May 16 th CANCELLED The May 16 th workday is cancelled due to the King City Fair. June 6 th is the next farm work day. The next cleanup days will be as follows: 6/20, 7/18, 8/15, 9/19, 10/17. It is mandatory that everyone that uses the farm works at least 6 hours at the farm. Please bring weed eaters or mowers (gas operated, we have no electricity), protective gear, water or something you want to drink, a snack or sack lunch, sunscreen, gloves, rakes, hoes or shovels and wear proper shoes. Farm requests are available online or in the 4-H office. Farm is available for all fairs. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Susan Dike at 831-801-5882. Thank you for your help. Please note that during the spring (now) is the time we need the most help with mowing the grass. We greatly appreciate anyone with mowers to help. 4. 4-H Farm Needs ATTENTION SHEEP AND GOAT LEADERS & MEMBERS: The 4-H farm is looking for some non-market goats or sheep to help with the weeds at the farm. If you are interested in helping, please contact Sue Dike at 831-801-5882. 5. SBC Fair Tagging Dates Beef will be tagged at Bolado Park on May 31 st and small livestock will be tagged at the FFA building on the San Benito High School campus on Saturday, August 1 st. Times have yet to be announced. 6. State Field Day-May 30 th Held at UC Davis, this event features State Presentation Day, State Fashion Revue, judging contests, an interview competition, a logo design contest, much more! Attendees will get to meet 4-H members from across the state and will be inspired by other members work. For more information go to the website: http://4h.ucanr.edu/4-h_events/sfd/. Registration is done online for State Presentation Day and State Fashion Revue. The deadline for State Presentation Day registration is May 19 th and State Fashion Revue registration closes on May 16 th. 7. Judges Needed for State Presentation Day Issues of the 4-H Update can be found on the San Benito County 4-H Website at: http://cesanbenito.ucanr.edu/news_794/4-h_guidepost/

If you enjoy judging presentations and want the opportunity to give feedback to presenters from across the state, then please sign up to be a judge (now referred to as an evaluator for State Presentation Day. This event is held as part of State Field Day at UC Davis on May 30 th. For more information, please see flyer below and check out the website: http://4h.ucanr.edu/4-h_events/sfd/pd/. 8. State Presentation Day If you received a gold at Sectional Presentation Day, then you qualify to present at State Presentation Day! This event is held in conjunction with State Field Day on May 30 th at UC Davis. Please register online before May 19 th here: http://4h.ucanr.edu/4-h_events/sfd/pd/ 9. Fashion Revue Congratulations to the 2015 Fashion Revue participants! If you are a Gold Winner, then you can enter State Fashion Revue, which will take place at State Field Day on May 30 th at UC Davis. You can register online here: http://ucanr.edu/survey/survey.cfm?surveynumber=14598 Please remember: Registration closes on May 16 th. 10. Record Book Workshop-June 15 th Are you new to 4-H and need help knowing where to start on Record Books or are you constantly confused by the different forms? Then you need to come to the Record Book workshop on June 15 th! The workshop will be at 6:30 at the Vet s Building in room 218. Parents are encouraged to attend. Please RSVP to Emily Whiteley at the 4-H office. 11. Kids at the Park-June 24 th This event will be held on June 24 th from 10:00-2:00 at Dunne Park. It is a great opportunity to promote 4-H while interacting with the youth of our community! If you or your club is interested in working at a 4-H booth, please contact Emily Whiteley for the registration paperwork. Please note: registration must be turned in by May 29 th to Hollister Recreation. 12. New Livestock Wash Rules for the 2015 Salinas Valley Fair In an effort to conserve water during the annual Fair, the following rules will be enforced: 1).Washing of animals during the fair is limited to Wednesday, May 13 th and Thursday, May 14 th. 2). All hoses must be free of leaks and must have a nozzle attached. 3).Exhibitors may clean animals using a spray bottle or bucket in their assigned pens at any time. 4). Exhibitors violating rules will be fined $50. Auction checks and premiums will be held until fines are paid by exhibitor. It is recommended that exhibitors bring their livestock animals to the fair show ready to limit the need for cleaning livestock while on site during the annual fair. All livestock judges will be made aware of our rule limiting the availability of wash racks to conserve water. They will be asked to take this into consideration when judging our shows, especially showmanship. Wash racks near the Topo Barn will be removed Thursday evening at 8 PM. Please see the flyer below for more information. 13. Bio Security Control Group Members Needed

Bio Security is a program designed to educate the livestock members on disease control within their livestock project. 4-H members are eligible to participate in this program if they are raising a market steer, market swine, market lamb, market goat or dairy cattle, breeding cattle, breeding swine, breeding sheep, dairy goats that will be exhibited at the Monterey, Santa Cruz or San Benito County Fair. Thank you to all the livestock leaders that participated in the Treatment Group training last Saturday. We are looking for 4-H livestock members and leader to participate in the Control Group of this program. The UC Davis research team and Julie Katawicz will take stool, soil and water samples at the beginning of your project, middle, and during fair. The member will not have to change their animal practices, or participate in the education part of the program. Please call the 4-H office if your group or livestock member is will to participate in the Control Group. 14. Steps to Success The State has issued a helpful chart defining the levels of participation within 4-H. You can find this chart on our county s website: http://cesanbenito.ucanr.edu/files/212369.pdf 15. Above the Influence Event-May 20 th There will be a community event on substance abuse on May 20 th. The event will take place at the Veteran s Building from 6:00-8:00 pm. See flyer below. 16. Annual Enrollment Fee Increase The annual 4-H enrollment fee will be increasing for the 2015-2016 year. Youth will now be $38.00 and adult volunteers will be $14.00. If necessary, now is the time to start planning club fundraisers to help cover the costs of enrollment. Reenrollment packets will be available at the Office by May 18 th. 17. Feedback for the Revised Presentation Manual The 4-H Presentation Manual Task Force has released a draft version of the new 4-H Presentation Manual! They are seeking feedback from staff, volunteers, and youth. If you are interested in reviewing this new version, email Emily Whiteley at emcwhiteley@ucanr.edu to get a copy of the draft manual. 18.
