The School of Art and Design at Southern Illinois University takes pride in presenting the annual Rickert-Ziebold Trust Awards. The purpose of the award is to honor and reward outstanding graduating seniors from the School of Art and Design. The awards are made possible through the generosity of the late Joseph Rickert family. Mr. Rickert, a prominent lawyer and State Senator from Waterloo, Illinois, enjoyed a personal interest in the Arts. Through the family's friendship with Dr. Delyte Morris and Dr. Shryock, they came to appreciate the central role played by Southern Illinois University in the cultural life of our region. This award, established in memory of the Rickert family, serves to support and encourage that tradition of excellence. Because of their vision, love of art, and confidence in the future, we are able to make an annual distribution of cash awards to outstanding Rickert-Ziebold scholars. Each year, seniors in the School of Art and Design are invited to participate in the selection process. It is a challenge and perhaps their first experience with peer competition and professional evaluation. The faculty of the School of Art and Design judge their presentations on the basis of performance and excellence in creative achievement. After a preliminary jurying and evaluation of creative work through a digital formats presentation, finalists are judged eligible for the second step in the selection process. This consists of a one-week exhibition of their artwork. At this time, the faculty evaluates the work and selects the Rickert-Ziebold Trust Award winner or winners for that year. The winners are then honored in an awards ceremony at the exhibition. The School of Art and Design takes special pride in the achievements of the Rickert-Ziebold Trust Award recipients past and present. They reflect the ideals and aspirations of the benefactors of this award. Robert A. Lopez Interim Director School of Art and Design

Joseph Rickert and his family lived in Waterloo, Illinois. He was a trusted man in his profession of law, and also served diligently in the Illinois State legislature as a senator. He was the Superintendent of Schools in Monroe County before he became a lawyer. It was in this capacity that he and his family became good friends with Mr. Shryock, former president of Southern Illinois University. His daughters Marie, Luella, and Marguerite, became good friends of Hilda Stein, a long time professor in the Zoology Department at Southern Illinois University and visited her frequently there. The Rickert girls continued their friendship with Mr. Shryock, and later, a friendship with President Pulliam and President Morris developed. The Rickerts admired Dr. Morris' ability to develop the University and felt that there was a need for help in the field of art. Their love of art, their feeling for the need for more attention to the art department, and their personal interest in the University, we feel, precipitated the scholarship fund which has been set up in the memory of the Rickert family. I would hope that others would see the great need the Rickert family felt in supporting those that want to continue their education and develop their talents to the fullest. I feel that this established scholarship fund will be most beneficial to the University. The Late Marguerite Proctor Executrix
