L to Rt.: Alize Platt Anthony Acosta Dylan Gannon L to Rt: Mackenna Barton and Nocyia Logan Dean Shlotzhauer Jr Wendy Berg Program Today s program was presented by two speakers for the RFA Interact Club. The president of the club, John George, and the chair of the club Nancy Neiley spoke of the various projects they have undertaken.. The Rotary Interact Club meets on Thursdays from 2:00-3:00PM in Room 1329 which is Mrs. Neiley s room. The club has had dedicated students who have been with Mrs. Neiley for three years. They are all Juniors except for one Senior. There are 20,372 Interact Clubs around the world who believe in, Service above self just as adult Rotary members do. All of the projects are service oriented and funds raised are donated to different causes. The club has 10 members.

John mentioned a number of the projects that the club members have participated in this year. They include: Recycling Day at Bellamy School the Interact members showed students how to make snow globes out of empty water bottles in order to see a practical application of recycling objects for other purposes. Children s Christmas Party Interact members sang carols with Rome CSE students and made paper crafts with them as well. Bike Safety Awareness Bikes and helmets were raffled off to students which were donated by Walmart. Bake Sale was conducted at the Stewart s Shop in Lee Center with profits given to Lucy House. It is very gratifying to see that RFA has such conscientious and caring students who are willing to work hard for what they believe in. Mrs. Neiley does a wonderful job with these students. A Rotary Minute The following Rotary History bites are from a booklet published by Clifford L. Dochterman who was Rotary International President from 1992-3 called, The ABCs of Rotary. World Understanding month February hs been designated World Understanding Month on the Rotary calendar. The month also includes the anniversary of the first meeting of Rotary, held on February 23, 1905. It is now designated World Understanding and Peace Day. The RI Board asks all Rotary clubs to observe World Understanding month by planning programs for their weekly meetings and undertaking special activities o emphasize understanding and goodwill as essential for world peace. In February, many clubs arrange for international speakers, invite Youth Exchange students and international scholars from schools and universities to club meetings, plan programs featuring former Group Study Exchange members, arrange discussions on global issues, present entertainment with an international cultural or artistic theme, or plan other programs with an international emphasis. Many clubs take the opportunity to launch an international service activity or make contact with a Rotary Club in another country. February is also a good time to initiate a Rotary Friendship Exchange or encourage support for Rotary Foundation programs. World Understanding Month is a chance for every club to promote Rotary s continued quest for goodwill, peace, and understanding among people of the world. More information at: www.rotary.org/presidential-conferences Rotarian of October 2017: Our goal: a world without Polio Jay Wenger & Steve Almond (condensed) Jay Wenger is now director of the Gates Foundation s polio eradication program, but he started out at a mission hospital during his medical school education. He saw that a lot of health care and prevention of a huge amount of disease was possible for a relatively small amount of money. He became interested in infectious diseases and went to the U.S, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for additional training in infectious

disease epidemiology. Epidemiologists track infectious diseases and try to figure out how they spread, and then hopefully, figure out how to stop them. Jay worked in a group at the CDC that focused on bacterial meningitis, which is an infection of the brain and spinal cord. A bacteria called Haemophilus influenza Type B (Hib) was the most common cause, infecting up to 15,000 kids in the U.S. every year. That was when the Hib vaccine had just been developed. He got involved in monitoring how much disease was there and how the vaccine was working. We went from thousands upon thousand of cases each year to a couple of dozen as vaccine use spread to all kids across the country. Jay was born in 1955, the year the Salk vaccine was licensed and introduced in the U.S. The Polio scare was very big in the 1950 s. Polio became a major example of a successful vaccine and drove down the case counts from many thousands yearly to zero in the U.S. If you can break the chain of transmission, stop the virus from spreading from person to person through the vaccine, you can drive the virus into extinction. However, you have to get rid of the virus everywhere or it can come back, reinfecting places where it has been eliminated. This is why the World Health Assembly voted in 1988 to eradicate polio. Rotary was very important at the time and took ownership of the mission from the beginning, assisting numerous countries in the early stages of this effort. When Jay took his position with the Gates Foundation in 2011, Rotary and the Gates Foundation were already huge partners and Rotary had played a major role in getting the foundation involved in the polio eradication program several years previously. About the same time, the last case of polio in India occurred which energized the community to believe global eradication was really within reach. Rotary and the Gates Foundation committed to a multiyear strategic plan for ending polio for good, alongside the other partners in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative. (WHO, CDC, UNICEF) In June 203, Rotary announced that it would contribute $35 million per year for the next 5 years which the Gates Foundation would match 2 to 1. In June 2017, Rotary announced that it would increase that contribution t $50 million for the next 3 years which the Gates Foundation again committed to match 2 to 1. WE can t choose where to go, we have to go where the disease is. As of now, there are only three countries in the world where wild poliovirus may still circulate: Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Nigeria. These are challenging countries because they have much bigger issues to contend with than polio. If the virus remains anywhere, it can spread back to those places we have already cleared out. We have to extend our efforts to the hardest places in the world and to the least-reached kids in the world. Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has spent $450million and Rotary International has spent $150million to end polio so far.
