Grey Eagle Resort, Tsuut ina Nation (adjacent to Calgary) Conference Midwifery Matters 20-22 SEPTEMBER 2018 PARTNER & EXHIBITOR OPPORTUNITIES past present future where we came from where we are where we are going
ABOUT US The Alberta Association of Midwives (AAM) is the professional body representing midwives and the practice of midwifery in the province of Alberta. There are over 125 midwives registered in Alberta attending approximately 5% of the births each year. Midwives have been regulated by the government since 1994 and their services have been publicly funded since 2009. CONFERENCE OVERVIEW The AAM was awarded funding through the Status of Women Community Grant Program to host its inaugural Conference, Annual General Meeting and Exhibition at the Grey Eagle Resort on the Tsuut ina Nation (adjacent to Calgary) on Thursday, September 20 and Friday, September 21, followed by professional workshops on Saturday, September 22. Over the last 40 years, Alberta midwives have become part of the fabric of the maternity care system. The conference will explore Alberta midwifery s roots, its current state and its vision for the future all within the context of the broader maternity care landscape, says AAM President and registered midwife Nicole Matheson. We will feature Alberta s midwifery forerunners sharing where we ve come from. Time will also be spent exploring the relationship between indigenous and non-indigenous people and how it has impacted maternity care. The conference is open to AAM members, other health-care professionals and the public. In terms of where we are today, there will be emphasis on inclusion, respect and equity particularly given the World Health Organization s statement calling for a birthing person s right to dignified, respectful care in pregnancy and childbirth. The conference also aims to support the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada s Call to Action #22 that calls upon those who can effect change within the Canadian health-care system to recognize the value of indigenous healing practices. In terms of where we re going, the conference will add more threads to the fabric of midwifery that is so deeply rooted in community. Longer term, our aim is to achieve improved access to maternity care at home or closer to home in rural, remote, underserved and indigenous communities, adds Alberta Association of Midwives Interim- Chief Executive Officer Pablita Thomas. We hope to provide an inspiring and engaging conference for everyone attending, especially our members.
