ANNLINES St. Ann s Residence Newsletter July 2018 Mission: To provide a caring home for seniors where they can find calm from the storms of life, regardless of status.
Administrator s Letter Greetings, On June 21 st Summer finally arrived! Saint Ann s celebrated with another one of our epic rummage and bake sales. I want to thank all of those who volunteered and all of you that came. I was very excited to buy a very nice love seat for the Sun Room in my cabin. I know it is a lot of work, but the funds raised at these sales are very important to our organization. Speaking about funds, we have surpassed the amount needed for the simpler phase of the Social Hall floor. The root beer float fundraiser was very successful, thanks to all of you. I always enjoy the opportunity to play music and have fun. If I can do it and raise money for a Saint Ann s project, even better. A special Thank You to Jason from Maintenance (drums) and my friend Kyle Mehlem (electric guitar) for volunteering their time and skills. July, of course, brings our picnic for the 4 th of July. We will be celebrating on Tuesday, July 3 rd this year. Amazing picnic food and live music awaits you all on the patio. Residents eat and party for free, your guests will need to purchase a $3 ticket. Have fun enjoy the weather and the Holiday! Sincerely, Scott and Jan
Nurses Corner We have been very busy in the nursing department hiring and training new staff and admitting new residents. I am happy to say we are almost fully staffed and now will be hiring above that. We have a new RN in the office. Brooke joined us on 6/18/18 and she is doing a great job. I will try to introduce her at the next Open Forum. I just want to remind you that there is a charge for unscheduled Home Health Aid Visits. If you consistently need assistance, please call the nursing office so we can set up a service plan for you. Now that it is summer time and the weather gets hot, please make sure you are drinking enough water to avoid dehydration. The recommended amount of water is 8 cups a day. Good hydration helps to keep you moving, wards off urinary tract infections, and can keep you from having a fall. Caffeinated beverages will actually cause dehydration, so if you drink regular coffee, you should drink an equal amount of water. Have a blessed July!
RESIDENT PROFILE JULY 2018 LAURA CLAY Laura was born in Mammoth Springs Arkansas. She was the second youngest of eight siblings. She grew up there and went to school there, but graduated from high school in Missouri because she needed some classes they did not offer in Mammoth Springs. After graduation she worked for the Frisco Rail Road for three years as a telegraph operator. During those years she moved around a lot as you had to have seniority to get a permanent placement. Laura and Bill were married in 1950. They lived briefly in Colorado and Illinois before staying in Missouri for about 30 years and then Florida for about 40 years. They had two daughters three years apart. Laura worked at clerical jobs for a variety of places for five years and then did sewing for a lot of years after that. Bill worked most of those years for the Chevrolet Co. They made retirement plans including buying a motor home. For about ten years they would leave Florida in April to return in October. Traveling a lot brought them to all of the states in the union. Minnesota and St. Ann s became their home in February of 2016. Their daughter and son-in-law had found a retirement place in Grand Marais and brought Bill and Laura here to be closer to them. After 67 years of marriage Bill died in 2017. Laura has stayed here and continues to be comfortable here. Her daughter continues to visit once a week and takes care of details for Laura. Laura has had a variety of struggles over the past years but continues to brighten up others days with her smile.

News and Updates The project on 1st floor is nearing completion. We have had many compliments on the pictures and how nice the vending room turned out. We would like for everyone to be served in the dining rooms before residents asking for extras. As a reminder, walkers are NOT allowed in the dining rooms unless there is a medical reason for it on file. There continues to be noise in the hallways especially in the early morning hours. If you have care staff or visitors coming to your room please shut your apartment door. We have a no gratuity policy here at St. Ann s. Although our staff do a wonderful job they are NO ALLOWED to take tips.if you insist and they accept it they must turn it in and it is handled like a donation to St. Ann s. Please do not put their employment into jeopardy. Your pendants are for emergency's. Many residents are treating it as a room service system which make it very difficult for our staff.
