Dear conference participant, Thank you for attending the inaugural Indiana Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (IN LSAMP) Research Conference. Ivy Tech Community College is proud to partner with LSAMP to host this event. The theme, Investing in Future STEM leaders, is vital to Ivy Tech and to our community as a whole as we consider workforce demand in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math. Today, more than 80,000 jobs in Indiana are unfilled because employers can t find people equipped with the skills required for the positions. By 2025, there will be one million job openings anticipated in Indiana due to retirements and the creation of new jobs, many of which will be in STEM-related fields. The State has adopted the Big Goal to meet workforce demand: have 60% of the state s workforce equipped with a high-value, post-secondary degree or credential by 2025. Through Ivy Tech s new strategic plan, Our Communities. Your College. Pathways for Student Success and a Stronger Indiana, we are striving for Ivy Tech students to earn 50,000 high-quality certifications, certificates, and degrees per year aligned with Indiana s workforce needs. This goes hand-in-hand with LSAMP s goal of doubling the number of degrees at universities earned by historically underrepresented minorities in identified STEM areas. Ivy Tech is partnering with LSAMP to work toward this goal by serving the most diverse student population in the state, providing education and training in STEM programs, and facilitating seamless transfer for students to four-year degrees with IUPUI. We applaud LSAMP for striving for this important goal, which directly impacts our communities and Indiana s workforce. Thank you to everyone who helped make this conference possible. It is our hope at Ivy Tech that you consider how you fit into this mission within your organization and community and that you take something valuable away from this conference. Sincerely, Sue Ellspermann, Ph.D. President, Ivy Tech Community College 50 WEST FALL CREEK PARKWAY NORTH DRIVE INDIANAPOLIS, IN 46208-5752 4 Ivy Tech is an accredited, equal opportunity, affirmative action community college.

Acknowledgements 8 What is the LSAMP Program? The Louis Stokes Alliances for Minority Participation (LSAMP) is a program that was congressionally mandated in 1991 and has been managed by the National Science Foundation with a main focus on broadening the participation of minority students at the baccalaureate level and advanced degrees in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) disciplines. The LSAMP program assists universities and colleges to diversify STEM workforce through their efforts at significantly increasing the numbers of students completing high-quality degree programs in STEM disciplines. NSF LSAMP Program Personnel A. James Hicks LSAMP program director since 1997. He received a PhD in biology from the University of Illinois at Urbana and additional training at Harvard University, the National Institutes of Health, and the Missouri Botanical Gardens. When Dr. Hicks took over LSAMP, there were 25 alliances in the nation. Today, there are more than 40 active LSAMP alliances with more than 600 colleges and universities. These alliances are involved in increasing the quality and quantity of students from underrepresented populations who receive degrees in STEM disciplines. Martha James LSAMP program director. Ms. James has worked at NSF since 1985 in several NSF directorates. She joined the EPSCoR staff in August 2001 where she focuses her efforts on the Research Infrastructure Improvement Program, cofunding, and other special projects. She is a graduate of Trinity College, Washington, D.C., and is currently pursuing a graduate degree in management. LeRoy Jones II LSAMP rotating program director since 2017. Dr. Jones is also the dean and professor of chemistry in the College of Arts & Sciences at Chicago State University. Prior to joining CSU, Dr. Jones was a research scientist for BP Amoco Chemicals in Naperville, Illinois, and received an Honorable Discharge from the United States Army Reserves. He will return to his home institution in 2019. He received a BS in chemistry with a minor in religious studies from Bradley University and a PhD in organic chemistry from the University of South Carolina at Columbia, and he served as a Postdoctoral Scholar in organometallic chemistry at Caltech. He also completed an American Council on Education Fellowship at Hampton University (ACE Class of 2010 2011). Who is Louis Stokes? Louis Stokes and his brother, Carl, grew up in an impoverished part of Cleveland. After serving in the U.S. Army during World War II, he worked for the U.S. Department of the Treasury during the day while attending Case Western Reserve University at night. He earned a law degree from Cleveland-Marshall College of Law. Congressman Stokes represented his Ohio District in the U.S. House of Representatives for 30 years. Elected on November 6, 1968, he was the first African American member of Congress from the state of Ohio. The thrust of his career focused on advocacy for the poor and disadvantaged, especially those in urban America. He sponsored legislation to help people of color enter the intelligence community, fought for adequate housing for the poor, and oversaw the passage of the Disadvantaged Minority Health Improvement Act of 1989. Other legislative efforts included the sponsorship of programs for minority professionals at the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation, respectively. He served under six presidents during his 30 years in Congress. Congressman Stokes passed away in 2015....
