-2- Fun in the Snow at Sportsman s Park South Dakota Hunting The snow didn't stop Jim Chakour, back, from Naperville and Jim Monk, also of Naperville, from getting their trap shooting in at Naperville Sportsman's Club on Thursday, January 12, 2012. Brian Powers~Sun-Times Media Jim Monk, of Naperville, fires a shot in the snow at Naperville Sportsman's Club as Jim Chakour, back, of Naperville, waits for his turn on Thursday, January 12, 2012. Brian Powers~Sun-Times Media Looking for a great way to do some different hunting? Tom and Amy Clark spent a few days in South Dakota in mid- December, taking an American Bison and hunting pheasants for a couple of days. Mild weather was definitely a blessing. It s a long drive, but for those interested we can provide some connections for some very reasonably-priced wild pheasant hunting a very different experience than what we get here in the Midwest. By the end of the season the birds hear you coming at 100 yards, and they re much quicker than farmed birds. Bring your tighter chokes. It s roosters-only, no steel required, and a three birds/day limit. Expect to see other birds, particularly grouse, but know them to be a tough hunt by the time winter arrives. We got our limit both days, but we had to work for it. The guide we used operates on a family farm of some 6600 acres, and provides a variety of hunting options including prairie dogs, coyotes, mule deer and whitetails. He is very friendly and knowledgeable, provides, nice accommodations, good food, and energetic dogs. Tom Clark
