Parent Newsletter #21 1/23/15 NATIONAL LUTHERAN SCHOOLS WEEK January 25 th 31 st UPDATED BELOW! During the week of January 25 th 31 st, Lutheran Schools across the country (and internationally) will be observing National Lutheran Schools Week. This is an annual opportunity to celebrate Lutheran education. Lutheran High will be participating in this week. The theme for this year s event is Mercy Forever Standing in Christ, serving others, based on Mark 10:45: For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many. Each year during this week, the Lutheran schools across New Orleans unite for one event. This year s event will be held on Friday, January 30th. The need for LHS student volunteers on Friday the 30 th is less than anticipated. As a result, we are excusing freshman from this day of service. We will be planning a separate outing for them in the Spring to model service. Attached to this e-mail is a letter specifically for freshman parents/guardian with additional information. A hard copy of this letter is also being sent home with your child. In keeping with the theme of Serving we are asking our LHS seniors, juniors and sophomores to do one of two things: 1. Volunteer at one of our area Lutheran elementary schools that will be hosting certain grade levels from Lutheran schools throughout the city: Atonement Lutheran (6 th 8 th grades) LHS Boys Basketball Players Only 6500 Riverside Dr. Metairie, LA 70003 Faith Lutheran (K 2 nd grades) only needs 7 volunteers (priority given to Juniors/Seniors) 300 Colonial Club Drive Harahan, LA 70123 St. John Lutheran (3 rd 5 th grades) can use up to 25 volunteers 3937 Canal Street New Orleans, LA 70119 LHS volleyball players are encouraged to volunteer at St. John where Ms. Loughmiller will be leading a volleyball session for the 3 rd, 4 th and 5 th graders. Lutheran High faculty members will be leading sessions at these various schools and will be onsite to supervise. Members of Student Council, Service Club, Mission Club and athletic teams will be asked to choose one of these locations. 2. Volunteer at a location within your community to earn service hours toward your graduation requirement. We will provide a letter on Lutheran High letterhead that should allow you to volunteer on a weekday. Students are expected to get their volunteer site pre-approved and to start making arrangements now.

Students will be responsible for securing transportation to their volunteer site. There will be no bus service provided on this day! For this reason, we are encouraging students to choose locations near their home or to make arrangements with fellow students to carpool. The Lutheran School events will start at approximately 9:00 a.m. and should finish around 1:00 p.m. We will provide specific times for each site once we receive their final schedule of events. If you have any questions, please contact the school office (504) 455-4062 or Ms. Loughmiller at (mloughmiller@lutheranhighschool.net). NATIONAL LUTHERAN SCHOOLS WEEK LUTHERAN HIGH EVENTS The Service Club will be sponsoring several events next week! Monday through Wednesday you will have the chance to compete in trivia contests and challenges to win a free special lunch on Thursday. Thursday s special lunch will feature the following: Build Your Own Burrito or (plate of) Nachos Toppings will include: seasoned ground beef, rice, beans, lettuce, tomatoes, pico de gallo, jalapenos, olives, shredded cheese, queso, guacamole and sour cream. For $5.00 you will also get a beverage (lemonade or a bottle of water) and a dessert (brownies and cookies). Paying for the lunch also includes a dress down day you may wear jeans (no holes, rips, tears, or frayed hems), tennis shoes and a shirt that is a Lutheran High school color (red, black, gray or white). The shirt must be school appropriate (no cut-outs, sleeveless shirts or inappropriate sayings allowed). If you have any questions, see Ms. Loughmiller. Money will be collected starting Monday during your 1 st period class. Please pay by Wednesday! UPDATED SOCCER SCHEDULE Attached to this e-mail is an updated soccer schedule. Due to rain, we have rescheduled some games. If you have any questions, please contact Coach Marroccoli at (creolejoe14@yahoo.com). TRACK SEASON TO BEGIN IN FEBRUARY Varsity level track is currently the spring sport offered at Lutheran High. Track practice will begin in February. The official date will be provided in an upcoming e-mail. If this sport will be the first sport your child has participated in this year, he or she will need to complete the required LHSAA forms (Parent Permission, Substance Abuse and a Physical with a portion that must be completed by a doctor). Interested athletes are encouraged to see Ms. Loughmiller (the athletic director) to discuss eligibility and to obtain copies of the required forms. Parents or guardians who have questions are encouraged to contact Ms. Loughmiller at (504) 455-4062 or by e-mail (mloughmiller@lutheranhighschool.net). CONGRATULATIONS Lutheran High School, junior, Jessica Waddell will be participating in the Jr. Keeper program at the Audubon Zoo for the 3rd consecutive year. Jessica says, "It's very exciting to get to teach people things about animals and to see the wonder and curiosity in their eyes." The Jr. Keeper program encourages hands-on learning, creativity, teamwork, a sense of stewardship towards the environment and the development of work place and life skills through a wide variety of volunteer experiences. The 2015 Jr. Keeper Program is open to youth entering the 7th, 8th, or 9 th grade in the Fall of 2015. Don't forget when you're at the zoo to stop by and see Jessica!

PEOPLE TO PEOPLE-Ambassador Program Lutheran High School students, Annie Batte and Allison Garay were chosen as People to People Ambassadors. The students have the opportunity to participate in the European Odyssey trip this summer. The trip is filled with classic experiences: floating in a Venetian gondola, seeing Paris from the top of the Eiffel Tower, walking the streets of the Roman Forum, and making lasting memories with new European friends. Congratulations to Annie and Allison for this high honor The students chosen to be People to People Ambassadors are raising money to offset the cost of their trip. They are selling raffle tickets now, $2 for 1 ticket and $5 for tickets, to win a 42" flat screen TV. If you would like to buy a ticket or donate to their cause please contact Lutheran High School. ADMISSION PRICES FOR LHS ATHLETIC CONTESTS To help defray the cost of officials and to help fund athletic programs, schools typically charge admission to athletic contests. We made an exception for LHS volleyball this year due to our gym situation and having to play many of our home games at our opponent s gym. Admission will be charged for our home basketball games, all of which will be played at Mt. Olive Lutheran Church (315 Ridgelake Dr, Metairie, LA 70001). Below are the admission prices: Adults - $5.00 Students - $3.00 Children 5 and Under Free LHS Students Free ADMISSION PASS The LHS Athletic Department is offering admission passes for the upcoming basketball season. The prices are as follows: Individual Pass - $35 Family Pass - $50 (would cover three family members)

To help you determine if this would be beneficial for your family, we have fourteen (14) home contests scheduled. Payment can be made by cash, check or money order. Checks should be made payable to Lutheran High (with Admission Pass noted in the memo). Your name will be added to a master pass list. There will not be any card that you have to present at games. NOTE: Admission is typically not charged for soccer matches, unless they are played at a field on a school s campus. LHS will play the majority of our home games at LaSalle Field on Airline Drive and we will not charge admission. If you have any questions, please contact Ms. Loughmiller (mloughmiller@lutheranhighschool.net)
