BOOK NOOK & EXCHANGE Reading is refreshing and knowledge is power. Both senior center locations have a great selection of books. We have created cozy areas in each senior center for reading. With our book exchange program seniors can bring a book to add to our collection and exchange it for one of ours. COMPUTER CLASSES Ongoing beginner and advanced computer classes are held at the both senior center locations. For more information on upcoming classes, please call the Lexington office at 336-242-2290 or the Thomasville office at 336-474-2754. YO-CHI Yo-Chi is a blend of tai-chi and yoga, delivering a mind-body workout. - Classes are held on Mondays from 12:45 p.m. - 1:45 p.m. $5 fee/class or $25 for a (6) class punch card. Rates are as follows: $25 (30 minute massage), $50 (60 minute massage), $75 (90 minute massage) Add $10 for aromatherapy; Add $10 for deep tissue Enjoy a luxurious massage in a private room at the senior center. Massages are by appointment only. To schedule an appointment or for questions regarding massage services call Christine Gray at (336) 480-6569. GOLDEN LUNCH BOX DAILY MEALS The Golden Lunch Box offers seniors 60 and older a hot nutritious meal Monday - Friday at one of five convenient locations throughout the county. Various daily activities are offered such as informative speeches, health promotion, games, exercise and entertainment. The Golden Lunch Box is open from 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m., and lunch is served at approximately 11:00 a.m. For more information or to register, please call a site near you. Preregistration is required. BEAN BAG TOSS / CORNHOLE Seniors are invited to come out and play at these locations: Every Monday 9:30 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. (Outdoors-Weather Permitting), Tuesdays 10:00-11:45 a.m. (Indoors) Tuesdays and Thursdays at 10:00 a.m.(apr-sept; Outdoors-Weather Permitting) BINGO Seniors are invited to come out and play at these locations throughout the county. Every Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. (Bring 2 small prizes) Last Tuesday of each month (Prizes are provided) TABLE TENNIS Table tennis is played on Fridays 11:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Tuesdays 11:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. (Other days/times when room available) Everyone is encouraged to come play whether beginner or intermediate. ROOK Rook players meet each Tuesday and Friday at 12:30 p.m. 4 30 p.m. MAHJONG CLUB Meets the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of each month from 1:00-4:30 p.m. Whether you are a novice or a pro, enjoy the ancient Chinese game of Mahjong. GAME ROOM - Come play table tennis and the Nintendo Wii game featuring bowling and tennis. The Wii been called Video-Game Therapy for seniors and even Wii-Habilitation. SENIOR ROLLERS BOWLING LEAGUE Senior Rollers is a bowling league comprised of seniors age 55 and older. Bowling takes place at the Lexington YMCA every Tuesday at 1:00 p.m. For more information, please call the DC Senior Center in Lexington. LIVING SINGLE SENIOR SINGLES CLUB Club meets the 3rd Thursday of each month from 2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. Senior Singles Club is a club for the 55 and older senior who is single. CHORUS GROUPS The Davidson County Senior Centers have two chorus groups comprised of senior adults from Davidson County who perform for various nursing homes and civic groups. Both groups are always looking for new voices. - Meets every Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. - Chair City Classics meet every Tuesday at 12:30 p.m. unless a community performance is scheduled. SENIOR SHOWCASE The DC Senior Center in Thomasville wants to recognize the many artistic talents and personal collections of seniors in Davidson County. We have a large locked display case for this purpose. New artists, craftspersons or collectors will be featured every other month. Contributors will receive recognition of their display (unless instructed otherwise). Please call the center to reserve your month. Ongoing Activities page 8

Mondays 1:00 p.m. 4:00 p.m. STITCHERY Denton Civic Center Meets every Thursday at 9:00 a.m. TAX ASSISTANCE Offered February - April each year Volunteer counselors through the tax aide program of AARP are trained in cooperation with the IRS to provide counseling and tax form preparation. OPERATION FAN/HEAT RELIEF PROGRAM Offered mid July - September each year Operation Fan/Heat Relief is a special emergency project to help elderly Davidson County residents cope with the heat during the summer months. To be eligible for a fan, you must be 60 or older (or if under 60, with a disability) with an existing home situation that presents a threat to your health and well-being, must be a resident of Davidson County, and must not have central air. SUMMER FOOD EXCHANGE Offered mid summer - September each year Fresh fruits and vegetables are accepted at the senior centers and given to seniors in need. Ongoing Activities page 9

RECYCLE YOUR OLD CELL PHONES In the United States alone, an estimated 500 million cell phones have been retired, meaning they are unused in someone s home or in the trash. Davidson County Department of Senior Services along with the Davidson County Solid Waste Management Department have partnered together to collect old cell phones for recycling. Please bring your unused cell phones to one of the following locations: Lexington, 555-B West Center Street Extension, Thomasville, 211 W. Colonial Drive, Davidson County Landfill (drop off at the convenient center) or at any of the county s recycling centers where you usually take your garbage and recyclables. The collected phones will either be refurbished and reused or recycled according to EPA standards. Help keep harmful materials out of landfills and support your local senior center! LEGAL AID Seniors age 60 and older may receive free legal services in civil matters only. Appointments are required. The service is provided by Legal Aid of North Carolina, Inc. - First Wednesday of each month by appointment. - Second Monday of each month by appointment. To schedule an appointment at either location, please call the Senior Legal Helpline at 1-877-579-7562. SHIIP - SENIOR HEALTH INSURANCE INFORMATION PROGRAM SHIIP can help you find answers to the important questions you have on Medicare, Medicare supplement insurance, long term care insurance, and other health insurance issues. Call (336) 243-7475 and ask to speak with Karina Camp. FOOD & NUTRITION SERVICES (FNS) - MEDICAID APPLICATION AND ASSISTANCE Social Worker is available the 3rd Tuesday of each month, by appointment only to assist with applying for food stamps and Medicaid. Also provide information on emergency assistance and annual low income energy assistance. To schedule an appointment call (336) 242-2290. INFORMATION & OPTIONS COUNSELING & Thomasville Staff are available to assist individuals in connecting them with community resources, programs and services, making referrals to appropriate programs and planning for long-term services and supports.
