August 6, 2017 Parish Bulletin Issue 24 Volume XLIX ST. ALOYSIUS CATHOLIC CHURCH 2025 Stuart Avenue Baton Rouge, Louisiana 70808-3979 (225) 343-6657 Fax (225) 344-6847 Website: http://church.aloysius.org/ August 6, 2017 The Transfiguration of the Lord Jesus took Peter, James, and his brother, John, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. And he was transfigured before them; his face shone like the sun and his clothes became white as light. And behold, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, conversing with him. Then Peter said to Jesus in reply, "Lord, it is good that we are here. If you wish, I will make three tents here, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah." While he was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud cast a shadow over them, then from the cloud came a voice that said, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him." When the disciples heard this, they fell prostrate and were very much afraid. But Jesus came and touched them, saying, "Rise, and do not be afraid." And when the disciples raised their eyes, they saw no one else but Jesus alone. As they were coming down from the mountain, Jesus charged them, "Do not tell the vision to anyone until the Son of Man has been raised from the dead." MT 17:1-9 Visit Formed.org for more reflections on weekly readings using parish code QDMX6Q August 6, 2017 The Transfiguration of the Lord

August 5-6, 2017 Dear friends, Our Challenge The images in our reading this weekend from the Prophet Daniel portray power and they prefigure similar images in the Transfiguration. In this vision, white clothing is described and a throne of fiery flames. Both images are of purity and power. The powerful one can sit on a throne of fire and not be consumed. God called the Israelites to be holy and He calls us to be holy. We who are His must strive to be holy, consecrated to His service. For modern readers, the story of the transfiguration of Jesus is one of the most difficult to understand. However the meaning is clear. If we want to share in Jesus glory, we must be prepared to participate also in his suffering. The high mountain symbolizes the border zone between heaven and earth. It is a zone that separates the material and the spiritual. It was necessary to rise to the heights in order to obtain what was necessary spiritually in order to enable the work that would be done down in the valley. Don t we often prefer the high ground to the low valley? God would tell us that the low valley or the earth is where our work is done. Many of our prayers are for those who are residing in the valleys of life where there is constant struggle and constant suffering. However, living in the valleys of life gives us the chance for transformation and change. We cannot have only mountaintop experiences. We yearn for exceptional life experiences which bring us strength, hope and love. It is not wrong to wish for such experiences, but it is unrealistic to feel that all of our lives should be lived on the mountaintop. It is when we are in solidarity with Jesus and help others, that we are using our mountaintop experiences not just for ourselves, but in his service for everyone else. Have a good week! Love and prayers, Father Randy Children s Church is offered to all children in grades Pre-K through 2nd.
