The team has been busy developing themselves in the weight room and the classroom. Our strength and weight has increased nicely over the past several months. This is a credit to our strength and conditioning coach, Nick Savage. He has done an outstanding job keeping our guys focused and bringing an intensity to the weight room. We have really stressed how important it is to eat, eat again and eat even more to gain weight. As we enter the Spring, it s a time to start developing our team speed and acceleration. This is one area that we will work extremely hard to develop. I am excited about this year s team. It is a privilege to watch our young men grow into excellent studentathletes. Again, the coaching staff and I are always preaching about the importance of character and representing BHS with class and dignity. They have responded well. The senior leadership has been outstanding, and the younger players have benefitted immensely from their tutelage. To have a successful program, the senior class must take the lead and set the tone for the year. This year s senior class has done well in this area. We expect them to continue as we prepare for another championship season. Again, thank you for your support and please continue to support the Gridiron Club as we continue to look for ways to raise money for the program. They are always in need of volunteers who are willing to help. For us to continue to provide for our athletes and run a first class program, the gridiron needs your help. Thank you. Beat Benedictine 150 days! Go Spartans! Volume II, Issue 3 Page 3 Spring Strength and Conditioning Program Our young men have worked extremely hard over the winter to develop themselves in the weight room. We have established goals that have been met and continue to be upgraded on a yearly basis. Each year it seems that individual names have been added to our record boards. This is a credit to the coaches and the commitment our young men have made to strength and conditioning. Strength and conditioning coach, Nick Savage, continues to do an outstanding job assisting our young men in their development. We have high expectations for the 2012 team, and we know that the off -season program will be key to meeting those high expectations. This Spring we will continue to work our athletes in developing the skills that will be necessary to compete in the Federal League. Team building and leadership are always at the foremost of developing a solid program. Our young men have responded well and we will continue work in these areas. Spartans Take 1st Place in Power Lifting Meet Congratulations to the 2012 Boardman Football Team for taking first place in the recent Columbiana Power Lifting Meet held on March 3, 2012 at Columbiana High School. There were over 300 lifters who participated from twenty different schools. This years team lifted a total of 12,455 pounds, placing them in first place for the eighth consecutive year. I was impressed with the effort, attitude, and toughness of our guys. They competed at the high level and really got after it. This being our first opportunity to compete against other teams, I am very pleased. We also had five Middle School athletes compete and they did exceptionally well. I was impressed with the character and intensity that these future Spartans displayed during the meet. Community Service Projects Once again, I will be organizing community service projects throughout the year for our team. We will continue to put others first as we serve. On Saturday, April 28, 2012, our young men will be heading downtown to the Rescue Mission. We look forward to this opportunity to serve others. It is always a blessing to get out of our comfort zone. If you are aware of any worthy service projects, contact me and we will see if our young men can accommodate you. The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others. -Mahatma Gandhi Special Thanks to the Boardman Boosters I am extremely thankful to the Boardman Boosters for providing the necessary funding to purchase an apple computer that will be used to run our new scouting program. We will now have the capability to watch game and practice film on-line. This will be a huge advantage in preparing our young men. In addition, the majority of the Federal League teams use this same system, therefore, film exchange can now be done via e-mail rather than driving to Stark County which will save us much needed time during the season.
