STEVENSON HIGH SCHOOL TITAN MARCHING BAND Handbook 2018-19 MICHAEL D. SEKICH- DIRECTOR (586) 797-2128 MICHAEL.SEKICH@UticaK12.org www.shs-music.org ATTITUDE + RESPECT + COMMITMENT = SUCCESS 2018-19 SHOW: SUPER BOWL HITS!

First of all, I would like to welcome you to the Pride of Stevenson High School, the Stevenson Titan Marching Band! It is indeed an honor to be the director of such a fine ensemble. As the Director of Bands here at Stevenson, I would like to take some time to share some important information with you that will help you in making the transition to Stevenson a success. We have rules, and one that you NEVER want to break is that you represent this band both in and out of school. If I hear about any incident that may cause our group s reputation to be hurt, or something you have done to bring embarrassment to this organization, you may be removed from this organization. No discussion, no excuses. Also as a Stevenson High School requirement, you must be enrolled in a Band class to participate in the Titan Marching Band as an Instrumentalist. Attitude + Respect + Commitment = Success is the essence of our philosophy here at Stevenson High School. All members are expected to be available for all performances. All performances are a part of each student's grade in their concert classes during the school day here at Stevenson and at their respective Junior High School or the Utica Academy for International Studies. Physicals are mandatory for all members of the Marching Band and must be completed by August 6, 2018. This is a Utica Community Schools rule. It is for the safety of your child that they have a recent physical prior to leaving for Band Camp. If they have had one this spring, it must be dated after April 15 th. 2018. This is a UCS rule for Summer Camps. Away Band Camp supply list (highlights) Personal water bottle Lyre and music flip folder, with 8-12 windows Personal field marker, (your choice, flat is preferred) Pencil, Highlighters, 2-3 colors Sunscreen Mosquito Spray (we are up north in the woods!) Hat 2 Dot Books (section leaders will need a 3-ring binder and sheet protectors) Please do not wear new shoes to Band Camp! Break them in first Please see the Booster list for other detailed camp needs Memorization of music Eventually, all music must be memorized. We realize all students learn at different levels, but we have a system that works pretty well, not to worry. The faster the music can be memorized, the better the show will look and sound. Uniforms All uniforms are to go home following performances so they can be aired out. Use fabric softener sheets in your garment bags to help keep uniforms fresh. Racks are provided in the band room to hang uniforms properly if they are brought to school on the day of a performance.

NEVER STORE YOUR UNIFORM IN A BAND LOCKER OR LEAVE THEM ON THE FLOOR. Students are responsible to return their uniforms in the same condition as they were issued and are the property of Utica Community Schools. Parents/students are responsible for the full replacement cost of their uniform (approximately $500) should it not be returned or is damaged beyond repair. Do not cut or trim uniform material! For summer activities, we wear white shorts, white socks, white marching shoes, and our navy blue performance shirts. Blue Titans Band baseball caps are worn at Mr. Sekich s direction. (NO SHORT SHORTS or STRIPES). All shorts must be approved prior to away camp. We do sell the shirts and the shoes to all students prior to camp in August. The order forms and due dates are included in the Band Camp packet forms. Students are responsible for keeping track of their marching shoes and baseball caps don t leave them in the band room! Behavior School rules are in effect at all times. Members are expected to act accordingly when in uniform at every performance. If there is a problem that occurs, the Travel Contract (yellow sheet included in the Booster band camp packet) explains all the repercussions possible depending on how severe the act was. Parents/guardian and students must sign ALL contracts. Cost & Payments A pay-to-march fee of $450 is charged for students that participate in Marching Band and is due in full on Monday August 6, 2018. See the band camp packet for full details. Returned checks are charged a $25 fee. You will not be allowed to write checks for future band expenses should a returned check and the associated $25 fee not be resolved satisfactorily. This follows the policy that is enforced by Utica Community Schools. Unpaid Marching Band fees at the conclusion of Band Camp on August 17th will result in a fine being placed on the student s Power School account. Unpaid fines will prevent the student from being permitted to register for classes, traveling on any other student trips, participating in certain extra-curricular activities, and, if a senior, participating in graduation activities. School Trips/Travel If any students are in jeopardy of failing a class, the school and parents have a right to deny that student their right to attend the trip. THERE CAN BE NO REFUNDS. Expectations of the Stevenson Titan Marching Band 1. Our time together as a group is important and must be focused. 2. That the musical sounds we make are beautiful. Music comes first! 3. Our rehearsal time is for ensemble development, not for practicing parts. 4. That individuals learn to prepare independently away from the rehearsals aka Homework = Practicing 5. That we are a family community. We are team oriented in that we create an atmosphere built on respect and friendliness. 6. We are goal oriented in terms of musical achievement and performance. 7. That we are committed to the highest musical/visual/technical standards of our band. 8. That we prioritize becoming more musically sounding away from the band. (Practice) 9. A standardized formation will be set for every outdoor rehearsal. 10. When you are called to attention, we do not speak or move. One Band, One sound, One philosophy. Words to the Titans Fight Song Hail Hail to the Titans, Our victory march has just begun, Though the battles long may rage, They ll all fall before us, cause we re number one, And when the Titans march to victory, You better hear what we say, Cause we will fight, fight, fight, And we will win tonight, Because we re Titans all the way HEY!

Stevenson Marching Band Contract DUE AUGUST 6, 2018 I will attend all rehearsals/performances throughout the Marching Season as a member of the Stevenson Titan Marching Band. Performance conflicts in others areas of sports are excused depending on our event. Work is NEVER an excuse. Under no circumstances are any students to leave the football games early without permission from Mr. Sekich. I fully understand if I miss, or I am late for ANY rehearsal/performance, I will be benched for the next performance, (depending on the reason), and my grade WILL be lowered. This is part of EVERYONE S GRADE. If I do not have any music class for a grade, this still applies to you. If I miss TWO events/practices, I understand that I will be dropped from the Marching Band (depending on the reason). I also MUST supply Mr. Sekich with a letter, written by myself, with a signature from my parents/guardian explaining my actions. I fully understand that I am responsible for all of my own decisions and actions and that many others depend on my attendance on a regular basis to assure that the Stevenson Marching Band is ready to perform. All students will be acting on their best behavior at all times, this will not be compromised. Also, as a Stevenson High School marcher that plays ANY instrument, you must be enrolled in a Band class to participate in the Titan Marching Band. There are no exceptions. If you are not on a class list by September 4th, you will be removed from the Marching Band roster. MARCHING BAND IS NOT A SPECTATOR SPORT. All members MUST participate every day at every rehearsal. Your attendance is vital to our success at all times. Student Signature Parent Signature Mr. Sekich Director Stevenson Marching Band _Mr. Pfannes Mr. Pfannes Principal Stevenson High School
