Are We Moving? With the recent article in The Cumberland Times-News and news reported on the radio, we have been getting lots of questions about what s going on with The Lions Center. So we decided it is time share an update with everyone who has a vested interest in our facility, which includes our residents and their families, our staff and the community that we serve. The Lions Center is actively looking for property in the Cumberland area that would accommodate the construction of a new, state of the art skilled nursing facility. Administrative staff and the facility s board of directors have looked at several pieces of property, but to date the perfect piece of land, at the perfect price has not been identified. The recent news coverage about the facility s possible move has actually helped to alert us to additional possibilities which we will evaluate. But until the right parcel of land is identified and secured, we will continue to serve the community where we have been since 1969. We have had a bird s eye view of the work to ready the campus of the former Sacred Heart Hospital for the construction of the new Allegany High School. While some of the comments that have come to our attention imply that The Lions Center is being forced to relocate, that is not the case. We look forward to continuing to serve our current residents and community members that may need our services in the future, all while exploring what exciting new opportunities are available to us. We will continue to include periodic updates about our progress with identifying and securing a site for a new facility in our monthly newsletter. Should you have any questions at any time, please feel free to call us or stop in for a visit. We would love to speak with you. ARMY MARINE CORPS NAVY COAST GUARD AIR FORCE Did you know that Mother s Day has it roots in nearby Grafton, West Virginia? Mother s Day was first celebrated in 1908, when Anna Jarvis held a memorial service for her mother in Grafton. The day became an official national holiday in 1914 when President Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation declaring the second Sunday of May as a day to officially honor the nation s mothers. After the official declaration of the holiday, Anna Jarvis became very resentful of how the holiday became so commercialized. Her original intent was that people would honor their mothers by hand writing a personalized note thanking their mother s for everything they do, rather than buying gifts and pre-made cards. So on the Mother s Day.honor your mother with a hand made note or card! Memorial Day, held on the last Monday in May, is dedicated to celebrating and honoring the memory of all military personnel who died during their military service. The holiday s earliest history can be traced to ceremonies that honored the Civil War soldiers that died in the line of duty. Tradition requires that the United States flag be raised briskly to the top of the flag pole on the morning of Memorial Day and solemnly lowered to half-staff, where it should remain until noon on of the day. Then the flag is to be raised to full staff for the remainder of the day. The half-staff position is in remembrance of the more than one million service men and women who gave their lives in service to their country. The raising of the flag to full staff for the remainder of the day is symbolic of the resolve to not let their sacrifice be in vain, and to vow to continue to fight for liberty and justice for all. The Lions Center acknowledges the service men and women who have, over the years, paid the ultimate sacrifice on behalf of the freedom that we enjoy each day. America s fighting men and women sacrifice much to ensure that our great nation stays FREE. We owe a debt of gratitude to the soldiers that have paid the ultimate price for this cause as well as those who are blessed enough to return from the battlefield unscathed. Allen Boyd
