Bless our mothers, stepmothers, grandmothers, aunts, friends, and other women who have helped to mother us. May the example of their faith and love shine forth. Teach us to respect and honor them always. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen May 14, 2017 5th Sunday of Easter

May 14, 2017 Our Challenge Dear friends, Jesus disciples were increasing in number. One group murmured against another that their widows were neglected in the daily distribution of sustenance. The disciples met and said it was not right that they should give up the ministry of the word to wait tables. The apostles prayed and laid hands on them and the word of God increased. In our second reading this weekend, Peter challenged his hearers to come to the living stone, Jesus, and to be living stones themselves. They were a chosen race, a royal priesthood, and a holy nation. They were God s own people, and were bearing witness to Jesus Christ. Jesus was preparing his disciples for his departure. They were confused and upset. But Jesus promised them a bright future regardless of his physical absence. He said, He who believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I go to the Father. He said he would still be with them in spirit. Incarnation is a difficult concept for many, yet it is crucial to a full understanding of Jesus. It affirms that the eternal Son of God took human flesh from his mother, Mary, so he was at once fully God and fully human. The doctrine took shape during the 4 th -5 th centuries, and was formally defined at the Council of Chalcedon in 451. Discovering Jesus means more than merely learning about him. His true followers follow him and truly discover him. Betrayal and promise are often two sides of a person s life. Disappointment and hope are another way of expressing this dichotomy. This is nothing new. Biblical people knew this same up or down pattern during the years of their lives. In our own lives we may lose sight of this long-standing pattern until we experience a true up or a real down. Being followers of Christ will take us on many different paths. But if we stay close to him day by day, even in our times of tragedy and loss, we will find inner resources for hope, endurance, and joy. Discovery is one of life s most exhilarating experiences. At best, it should be a part of our lives, all of our lives. The realm of reality extends far, far beyond all human imagination. We have all experienced discoveries that literally changed our lives. But in Jesus Christ there are still more wonders to be discovered. But we must keep our eyes on the One who still shows us the way. Have a good week! Love and prayers, Father Randy Men s ACTS Retreat Interested in attending a Men's ACTS Retreat. The next St. Aloysius Men's ACTS Retreat is set for Sept. 28 through Oct. 1, 2017. Our Lady of Fatima The famous apparitions of the Virgin Mary to the children of Fatima, Francisco and Jacinta Marto and their cousin Lucia dos Santos, took place during the First World War. On Sunday, May 13, 1917, toward noon, a flash of lightning drew the attention of the children, and they saw a brilliant figure appearing over the trees of the Cova da Iria. The "Lady" asked them to pray for the conversion of sinners and an end to the war, and to come back every month, on the 13th. Between May 13 and October 13, 1917, the children received apparitions of the Lady. On September 13, the Lady requested recitation of the Rosary for an end to the war. Finally, on October 13, the "Lady" identified herself as "Our Lady of the Rosary" and again called for prayer and penitence. On that day, a celestial phenomenon also took place: the sun seemed to tumble from the sky and crash toward earth. The children had been forewarned of it as early as May 13, the first apparition. The large crowd (estimated at 30,000 by reporters) that had gathered around the children saw the phenomenon and came away astounded. The Virgin Mary gave the children three secrets. Following the deaths of Francisco and Jacinta in 1919 and 1920 respectively, Lucia revealed the first secret in 1927. It concerned devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. The second secret was a vision of hell. Pope John Paul II directed the Holy See s Secretary of State to reveal the third secret in 2000; it spoke of a bishop in white who was shot by a group of soldiers who fired bullets and arrows into him. Many people linked this vision to the assassination attempt against Pope John Paul II in St. Peter s Square on May 13, 1981. The feast of Our Lady of Fatima was approved by the local bishop in 1930. Men s Club Thank You The St. Aloysius Men's Club held their annual crawfish boil in April and it was another big success. Thank you to the Men's Club Board who work hard to ensure our parishioners have events that build a stronger parish and community. Also, many thanks go out to Mockler Beverage for again sponsoring our event, Walk-Ons for cooking excellent crawfish with all the fixins, and Denton Hatcher and the Soap Box Blues Band for providing the entertainment. Thank you all for attending. Women s ACTS Retreat Prayer Poster Please consider praying for the 36 women who will be attending the upcoming St. Aloysius Women s ACTS retreat on June 1-4, 2017 at Rosaryville Spirituality Center in Ponchatoula, LA. Anyone interested in committing to pray for a one hour time slot during the weekend of the retreat can sign up on the prayer poster located in the back of church. The prayer poster will be available until June 1st and lists the hours that coincide directly with the retreat. Those who commit to pray are not required to be in church during the selected time. ACTS is an acronym for Adoration, Community, Theology, and Service. May 14, 2017 3 5th Sunday of Easter

The Interfaith Federation of Greater Baton Rouge has been a leader in that movement. On their own, members of St. Aloysius Parish and Immaculate Conception Parish have also just concluded a series of discussions about the racial divide. And now, for this concert, members from the two parishes will perform,, along with other cross-racial partnership congregations. This year s concert will feature songs from the interfaith community, as well as music performed by a series of ensembles. Each ensemble consists of musicians from two congregations who are in a partnership through the Interfaith Federation s Congregation-to-Congregation initiative. When did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? When did we see you ill or in prison, and visit you? And the king will say to them in reply, Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.
