2018 2018 Host Host Guide Guide Wednesday, - October 24, 2018

Be sure to follow us on: Twitter: @cfpbmc Facebook: facebook.com/cfpbmc Youtube: youtube.com/ palmbeachmartincf About On the Table Thanks for hosting a mealtime conversation as part of On the Table 2018. On a single day, Wednesday, October 24, 2018, you ll be part of an exciting, region-wide initiative to explore the ways in which we have the power to work together in order to make our communities stronger, safer and more dynamic. In today s world, the act of coming together has never been more important. On the Table brings colleagues, friends, family and neighbors together to share a meal and discuss meaningful ideas to strengthen our community. It s an opportunity to shape our region into a strong, vibrant, safe and dynamic place to live and work. While we know that there s no quick fix to the issues facing our region, progress will result from residents and organizations working to make contributions that add up to a greater solution that helps unite the place we call home. On the Table is the channel for conversations to take place. What happens next is up to you. On the Table is part of a national civic engagement initiative supported by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation; it was initially developed by The Chicago Community Trust. Hosted by the Community Foundation for Palm Beach and Martin Counties The Community Foundation is dedicated to building vibrant communities through strategic grantmaking, civic engagement and inspiring philanthropy. Planning Your Event The Day Wednesday, October 24, 2018. All On the Table events will take place on this day during mealtime conversations breakfast, lunch, dinner and in-between. The Guests The invite list is up to you. If you re unsure, start with people you know friends, family, colleagues and neighbors. We encourage you to expand your circle. Consider reaching out to a larger community by co-hosting your event with a local church or nonprofit. Ask your guests to bring a friend, or invite people from your network that don t already know each other. The Numbers Eight-to-twelve guests per table are ideal. On the Table is about giving everyone a chance to speak and be heard. If you want to host a larger gathering, consider breaking into smaller groups and allowing time for each to discuss and report out to the larger group. Registration Visit yourcommunityfoundation.org/onthetable to register your event and yourself as a table host. Spread the Word What will you do to create a more unified community? How will you use your On the Table conversation to bring your colleagues, friends, family and neighbors together to lead change in your organization, neighborhood or throughout Palm Beach and Martin Counties? The Community Foundation encourages you and your guests to share commitments and connections with us leading into, during and following your conversations using the hashtag #OnTheTableFL. We want to showcase the action emerging from your conversations to inspire collaboration and action from others, and drive progress across the region. 4

The Table Is Set. Now What? Conversational Guidelines Consider the conversation as a journey. Every guest s ideas and stories are important. Focus on generating solutions. Sample Conversation Prompts 1) What are some positive characteristics or qualities that make our community a great place to live? 2) What are the needs of our community today? 3) How can we individually address those needs? 4) What can we collectively do to make our community even stronger? 5) What s your experience been like living and working in _(city)? Our conversation prompts are intentionally left VERY open-ended in order to encourage On the Table participants to think creatively and reflect on possibilities, rather than fixate on already identified challenges. Do s & Don ts Do Encourage everyone to participate. Invite guests to follow-up and expand on ideas. Share your photos, videos and stories on October 24 using the hashtag #OntheTableFL on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. Call On the Table support staff at 561.659.6800 if you have any questions. Don t Micromanage the conversation, let it flow freely. Be judgmental or dismissive of any person s comments or ideas. Promote argument or unproductive debate. Be afraid to ask if you have questions on October 24th we have a team ready to help. 2018 Host Guide Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2018 yourcommunityfoundation.org/onthetable #OnTheTableFL 5

Wrapping Up Don t Forget The Survey! After Your Event In today s world, this act of coming together has never been more important. On the Table will connect individuals and communities of diverse perspectives and backgrounds. Talking and listening to our neighbors is an important first step toward creating a more unified community. Before your guests depart, encourage them to help us record thoughts, actions and ideas coming out of every conversation by completing a short survey that is being conducted by national partners Hart Research and Public Opinion Strategies. You and your guests can text OTTFL to 797979 to complete the survey, or complete it via email. You and your guests can text OTTFL to 797979 to complete the survey.
