Do not let the same person handle cash receipts and also make bank deposits.
2. Have other members reconcile the bank accounts that do not sign the checks or make deposits. 3. This creates a separation of power and decreases the likelihood of financial fraud. ii. Require two signatures on each check, the President and another elected Chapter Officer. 1. Make sure your bank is aware of this requirement. The bank will refuse to cash a check if it only has one signature. iii. For large cash balances, consider investing in a money market (MM) account or certificates of deposit (CD) to earn more interest. 1. Make sure the chapter s cash needs can be met if there are penalties for withdrawals before the established maturity date. 2. For example, do not buy a six month CD if you will need some of the money in four months. - Some MM accounts charge fees if the balance is below a minimum amount. 3. Compare the fees to the interest that will be earned to determine if it is beneficial open this type of account. iv. Certificate of deposit (CD s) interest rates are sometimes negotiable. 1. Explain you are a not for-profit organization and ask for higher rate. e. Parliamentarian: Tom Ogren, ifccsuparliamentarian@gmail.com, 303-594-1804 3.
