SIGNING ON: Fordham and head coach Dereck Whittenburg announced a contract extension on Nov. 9 that will keep the fifth-year head coach in the Bronx through the 2012-13 season. The Rams have improved from six wins in Whittenburg's first year at the helm in 2003-04 to 18 last year, their most victories since the 1991-92 campaign. Fordham also finished 10-6 in the A-10 play last season, its best finish since joining the Conference in 1995-96. EXPANDING ITS WEB: Richmond forced 26 turnovers on Nov. 13 as it edged East Carolina in overtime, 67-65. The 129 points were two more than the previous record set in a 127-85 win over Saint Peter's on Feb. 17, 1973, and the 70-point margin tied a 90-20 win over St. Canisius set on Feb. 24, 1915. Duquesne shot 69 percent (49-of-71) from the field and outscored Howard, 43-9, in points off turnovers. The Dukes have topped the century mark three times since Ron Everhart became head coach in 2007. STRAIGHT SHOOTING: Massachusetts shot a blistering 14-of- 26 from three-point range in its 102-87 win over Northern Illinois on Nov. 10 in the second round of the BTI Tip-Off Tournament in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The program record for three-point field goals in a game is 15, set in 1997 versus Temple. UMass is averaging nine three-point field goals made through four games this season. CROWD FAVORITES: Xavier opened its season with a 90-59 win over Southeast Missouri State on Nov. 10 before a soldout Cintas Center crowd in the opening round of the Chicago Challenge. The Musketeers sellout was its first in a season opener since 2001-02. The victory also marked the 18th consecutive season-opening win for Xavier as head coach Sean Miller improved to 4-0 in season openers. NO SKI MASKS INCLUDED: Charlotte recorded 14 steals, including six by freshman An Juan Wilderness, in its 61-55 season-opening win over High Point on Nov. 9. The 49ers season-high in steals last season was 13. The win also marked the 350th career victory for head coach Bobby Lutz, now in his 19th year as a head coach and 10th at Charlotte. Charlotte started the season is 2-0 for the first time since 2000-01 after earning an 84-78 win over Appalachian State on Nov. 12.

The watch list was compiled by the Atlanta Tipoff Club's Board of Selectors, which based its pre-season criteria on player performances from last season and expectations for the 2007-08 campaign. Seniors and juniors accounted for 17 apiece, along with 16 sophomores. The list does not include incoming freshmen, although those student-athletes will be considered in the first vote in January, 2008. A LOOK BACK Tuesday, November 13 Richmond 67, East Carolina 65 (OT) Sophomore forward Dan Geriot scored 22 points and added 10 rebounds and forward Oumar Sylla added 15 as visiting Richmond edged East Carolina in overtime, 67-65. Freshman Kevin Smith scored seven points off the bench for the Spiders, who forced 26 turnovers on the evening. Missouri 79, Fordham 55 Seniors Marcus Stout and Bryant Dunston scored 13 points apiece in Fordham s 79-55 loss at Missouri in the O Reilly Auto Parts CBE Classic. Freshman Mike Moore added 10 points and Brenton Butler nine for the Rams, who were held to 30.2 percent shooting from the field. Maryland-Baltimore County 76, La Salle 69 Sophomore Rodney Green scored 19 points on 7-of-14 shooting and senior Darnell Harris added 18 as La Salle opened its season with a 76-69 home loss to Maryland- Baltimore County. Freshman forward Jerrell Williams added 10 points off the bench for the Explorers. Syracuse 72, Saint Joseph s 69 Pat Calathes and Darrin Govens scored 22 points each and sophomore Tasheed Carr dished out a game-high nine assists in Saint Joseph s 72-69 loss at Syracuse in the second round of the Preseason NIT. Carr added 13 points and four steals while shooting 5-of-8 from the field. Miami (Ohio) 59, Xavier 57 Sophomore forward Derrick Brown scored 12 points on 5-of- 5 shooting and swingman B.J. Raymond added 11 points off the bench as visiting Xavier was edged at Miami (Ohio), 59-57. C.J. Anderson chipped in 10 points and five rebounds for the Musketeers. Wednesday, November 14 Massachusetts 89, Yale 80 Guard Ricky Harris led four players in double figures with 23 points and Massachusetts shot 53.3 percent from the field as it captured its home opener with an 89-80 win over Yale.
