Francis Cannon VFW Post 7589 Minutes of General Membership Meeting, July 1, 2013 Draft Subject to Approval Commander Link called the VFW Post 7589 General Membership meeting to order at 1930 hours. Commander Link announced Adjutant Travis Nelson has resigned. New Members QM Raskin said the Post has one new application for membership. Wayne Hulit, a Vietnam Veteran.
QM Raskin made a motion to accept this man as a member of Post 7589. JVC/SO Botello seconded the motion. Motion Carried Minutes from June 3, 2013 General Membership Meeting JVC/SO Botello made a motion to accept the Minutes as written. Chaplain Chase seconded the motion. Motion Carried. Quartermaster s Report for June, 2013. JVC/SO Botello made a motion to accept the report subject to audit by the Post Trustees. Comrade Moore seconded the motion. Motion Carried. QM Raskin said Bingo was coming along and receipts were slowly improving. QM Raskin said two members would have to be named acting trustees tonight so they could look at the Post Quarterly Audit. Commander Link appointed Comrade Terry Bursey and Historian P. Chase as acting trustees. Trustee 2 Gillette was present. Report of Service Officer SO Botello said both Advocate Steve Meade and Comrade Wayne Moore have been trained as service officers. SO Botello said he had worked to get a female member of the Post into services at Walter Reed and was successful. He also has been working with a male Army veteran who has completed two combat tours in Iraq. He is currently stationed in Hawaii. SO Botello has worked to get him treatment he needs. He said the process is slow and there are impediments. SO Botello said beginning July 11 th a service officer from the state of Va. Veterans Affairs Office will be at the Post Home on the
second and fourth Thursday of each month from 9am to 3pm to help veterans. Chaplain s Report Commander Link reported his mother was ill and had been hospitalized. Youth Committee Youth Chair MacLeod reported the Power Point presentation Welcome to VFW Post 7589 is finished and ready to be put to use. Both the Manassas City School Dept. and the Prince William County Public Schools have approved Post 7589 and the Ladies Auxiliary to conduct the Patriot s Pen and Voice of Democracy essay contests, the Teacher of the Year competition and the Patriotic Art Contests in the schools with the approval of the individual school principals for the 2013-2014 school year. The Youth Yard Sale to support the essay contest prize fund will be held at the Post Home from 7am to 2pm on Saturday, Sept. 7. Setup is Friday night, Sept. 6. Anyone who can donate items please contact Pete MacLeod at 703 220-4545 for pickup. The next meeting of the Youth Committee is Thursday, July 18 at 7pm at the Post Home. All are welcome! Correspondence Commander Link said the Post had received a Toys for Tots certificate for supporting that charity.
Commander Link said the Post had received a request for support from the National D-day Memorial Foundation in Bedford, Va. Chaplain Chase said he had visited the D-Day museum and it was a good place with interesting items but he said not many people were there. Good of the Order At the Virginia State VFW Convention Commander Link reported that the Post was awarded the Outstanding Newsletter award thanks to the work of QM Raskin. The Post also received a $100.00 check and plaque for leading District 8 in the number of new life members. Also VFW District 8, under the command of Rick Raskin, was recognized for achieving 100 percent membership. Commander Link was recognized and received a National Certificate of Recognition for his service on the National Military Services Committee. Trophies for all of this were on display at the Post meeting. Commander Link said the Ladies Auxiliary won first place for their Buddy Poppy Display and once again this year, the Ladies Auxiliary of Post 7589 had the first place Patriotic Art winner. This year s state champion is Elizabeth Chung of Osbourn Park High School. Commander Link presented Comrade Wayne Moore with a certificate from the 2012 VFW Va. School of Instruction. Commander Link had a safety warning reminding Post members to be safe with fireworks. Commander Link reminded Post members to submit the number of hours they work on Post business each month.
Commander Link warned that a dues increase is coming and encouraged Post members to get Life Memberships. QM Raskin said there would be work to finish the patio in back of the Post Home on Tuesday, July 9 beginning at 9am. Help is requested from every member who can be present. Upcoming dates: Youth Committee Meeting, July 18 at 7pm. National Convention in Louisville, KY, July 20-24. Executive Board Meeting July 25, 7pm. School of Instruction at the Fredericksburg VFW Post 3103, Sat., Aug. 3, 9am 3pm. Lunch provided. Post 7589 General Membership Meeting, August 5, 7:30 pm. District 8 meeting, August 26, 1pm, VFW Post in Morrisville (Southern Fauquier). Carpool leaves from Post 7589 at 11am. Youth Committee Yard Sale, 7am 2pm, Sept 7 at the Post Home. Chaplain J.
