The Department's mission is to serve America's veterans and their families with dignity and compassion and to be their principal advocate in ensuring that they receive medical care, benefits, social support, and lasting memorials promoting the health, welfare, and dignity of all veterans in recognition of their service to this Nation.

Who is eligible?

BASIC ELIGIBILITY FOR VA BENEFITS Who Is a Veteran? A person who served in the active military, naval, or air service, and who was discharged or released therefrom under conditions other than dishonorable. 38 U.S.C.S. 101(2); 38 C.F.R. 3.1(d) (2016).

U.S. is the only country to offer education benefits to veterans (some offer benefits to survivors). U.S. and Canada are the only ones to offer life insurance programs for disabled veterans.

U.S. provides burial benefits after veterans are separated. Nearly all other countries limit burial benefits to death resulting from service.

U.S. and Israel are the only countries to offer business and home loans. Most use some kind of disability rating scale. However, the type of injuries which fall into comparable ratings vary widely.
