The test is finished, and Kevin is handing the test to his instructor, David Wagner, AP. THIRD WEDNESDAY AND IMPORTANT NOTES (Please note change of venue!) General Gathering of Members in June 2011 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ June 15, 2011 Date: June 15, 2011 Time: 1915 Location: Tigard West Marine Store, 15230 S.W. Sequoia Parkway, Tigard, OR Topic: Rope splicing ( see article on p. 3) Speaker: Captain Bob 1
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ FIRE EXTINGUISHER TRAIING ANNOUNCED P/C Bob Cravens, SN, has once again arranged for the electronic fire extinguisher training equipment to return to District 32. Several groups have arranged for training, but there will be an all-district event on Tuesday evening, June 7, 2011, at the FVSPS instructional space, located at 865 NE Hayden Island Drive Suite #4, which is at the east of Hayden/Tomahawk Islands. Time: 1900 Place: FVSPS classroom 865 NE Tomahawk Island Dr. Portland, Or Date: June 7, 2011 Contact Info: CRAVE555@aol.com P/C Bob Cravens, SN 1-360-694-0434 The Demo unit will allow to put out a simulated fire under different conditions to train you about the use of a fire Extinguisher with different kings of fires... paper, electrical and gasoline. People that have fought actual fires say that the Training unit is as real as a fire. This training is to show you and your family the most realistic tactics to fight a fire on your boat, kitchen or car. This is a training opportunity that cannot be found at your fire department any more. The budget cutbacks have made it very expensive to receive this training from your local fire Department. There will be no charge for this training and if you could find it at your local fire department, it would be over $25 per person, as it is in Vancouver's training region. So come on over and try this out... each person will be allowed to try several times on different types of fires...! We found at last year's Boat Show that many people learned how little they knew about extinguishers, and the techniques needed to be effective at fighting fires...!! This qualifies for your On The Water Fire Extinguisher requirement. Note by P/C Bob Cravens, SN (FVSPS) Co-Op Charting Event May 22, 2011 Two BSPS members braved the cool and frequently rainy weather on May 22, 2011 to check out the ATONs in the Portland Willamette River area between the Sellwood Bridge and the entrance to Multnomah Channel. The water was quite high, to the point where the new daymark at Toe Island is almost underwater. (This daymark replaced the green buoy that has been there in years past.) All in all though, a pleasant day out with the BSPS Commander Dave Shively, S, and the D32 Commander Steve Gatton, AP. 2
BSPS EDUCATION NEWS Lt/C Mark Balcom, SN kaiulani@coho.net 503-644-9496 The N class is finishing up, and classes for the Spring/Summer terms in Boating Safety are on the schedule in Cottage Grove, and will be offered in the Portland metro area as interest dictates. Please check the BSPS web site for other classes and locations. With Engine Maintenance class having been completed, there continues to be discussion as to which of the other elective classes will be next. One that was mentioned is the Weather class, which was last given in the spring of 2009, or perhaps Marine Electronics, which was last offered in 2010. Let the SEO and/or the ASEO if you d like to be a student, and in which class. David Wagner has two students taking ABC3 in Cottage Grove, and his Seamanship student has now both taken and passed the test (see story on p. 1). Piloting Course is underway, with 2 students. Plans are for the exams to be given in June. According to our ASEO Rob Hamilton Jr., JN, the recent Ham radio class was a great success. Of the ten students that started the class, eight took and passed the Technician exam, and four took and passed the General exam. Walt and Marty Crichlow from BSPS are now General and Technician levels, respectively, and District 32 has 8 more Hams. I have the Student kits for those who have been working towards their BOC Inland certification, and I only need to conduct a supervised On The Water exam to complete my Coastal Certifier qualification. District 32 is planning more OTW demo/exams this summer but locations have not yet been selected. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 2011 BSPS Schedule of Activities July 8, 9, & 10 - Third Annual Beyond the Bridge of the Gods Cruise (details on p. 4-5) (formerly Government Cove Cruise, Contact Andre McCormack, AP) August 19, 20, & 21 - District 32 Rendezvous at St. Helens (D32 Activity) August 27 & 28 - Ilwaco Land/River Cruise (Contact Commander Dave Shively, S) September 10 - Power Boat Outing at Detroit Lake (Contact Commander Dave Shively, S) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ROSTER ADDITIONS & CORRECTIONS CHANGE OF ADDRESS/ADDITION: NEW MEMBER Kevin Bourgault, S 25190 E.
