Mission & Impact Statements Mission Almost Home Animal Rescue is dedicated to improving the welfare of companion animals in our community through rescue, rehabilitation, adoption, spay/neuter, education, and awareness. Background Almost Home was founded in 2004 by Mary Hord. Mary had previously volunteered with Animal Relief Fund for two years, and launched Almost Home as a way to better address the needs of unwanted, abused, and neglected companion animals in Rutherford County. While Almost Home began as an all-breed dog rescue, the directors and volunteers discovered that the most critical need was for large and giant breed dogs, as they are the most overlooked at shelters. Over the course of the last 8 years, the directors and volunteers of Almost Home have assisted with several cruelty and neglect seizures, and are often called on by local media as experts in the field of animal care and animal welfare, particularly with regard to dogs and horses. Impact Almost Home initiated several community outreach programs in the last two years. Tennessee REIN (Reaching Equine In Need) and the Almost Home Pet Food Bank offer resources to owners of companion animals in order to allow these animals to stay in their current homes. Almost Home has also assisted many other area shelters and rescues by offering dog and cat food for their sheltered pets. We continue our efforts to rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome dogs and horses in Middle Tennessee. In 2012, we wish to expand the reach of our Pet Food Bank. We plan to continue and expand our rescue and rehabilitation efforts. We also hope to launch a pet welfare and wellness education program in the Middle Tennessee community. If requested grant funding is received, we also plan to launch a low-cost spay/neuter initiative in Middle Tennessee. Needs The top five most pressing needs for Almost Home include funding for veterinary bills and preventative care for the animals in our care. We also need funding and donated feed and hay for our outreach initiatives. Foster homes are amongst our most pressing needs. Volunteers to help with graphic design, marketing, and fundraising events are also critical for our continued success. Donated items such as leashes, collars, crates, dog beds, horse bedding, and used towels are always welcome. Other ways to donate, support, or volunteer We accept donations via paypal to donations@paypal.com, by credit card at events, and by check mailed to PO Box 10583, Murfreesboro, TN 37129. We also accept in-kind items related to the care of dogs and horses. New or gently used items including collars, leashes, halters, lead ropes, and buckets are always needed. We also have a need for cleaning items such as HE Laundry Detergent, Bleach, Clorox Cleaner, and Paper Towels. Programs Programs Rescue, Rehabilitation, and Rehoming Description Almost Home's primary activity is to rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome dogs and horses. We primarily rescue from area "kill" shelters, ie, those who are forced to euthanize due to overpopulation. We occasionally take owner surrenders, particularly those with life-threatening conditions exist for the pet. Budget 35000 Population Served,, Tennessee REIN (Reaching Equines in Need) Description The Mission of Tennessee REIN (Reaching Equines In Need) is to provide short-term assistance to horse owners in times of need. Budget 5,000 Population Served,, Almost Home Pet Food Bank Description In 2011, through the support of several generous partners, Almost Home was able to launch a community pet food bank. This pet food bank serves some individual pet owners, but primarily serves to distribute pet food to area shelters (particularly those in rural areas) and rescues in times of need. Budget 5000 Population Served,, Community Education and Awareness Description Budget The Volunteers and Directors of Almost Home are visible as animal advocates in the community in a variety of roles, both directly through their dedication to Almost Home, and indirectly through the knowledge, insight, and expertise they offer colleagues, family, and friends in their everyday life.
