Turn left and follow the road for approximately 2 miles. The restaurant is on the right side of the road. Food Drive collections are on the 2nd Tuesday of every month. We collected $67.00 for The Rome Rescue Mission at the May 10 meeting. 50/50 Barb Evans ticket was picked and but she did not draw the queen of hearts to win the pot of $5.00 or the Jack to win half. Rotarian honoree Rotarian Frank Barrows (Ft. Stanwix) will be honored at the Beeches for a Breakfast meeting of the Rome Chamber of Commerce. The breakfast will be held on June 9 at 7:00AM and the cost is $35.00 each. They request that some Rome Rotary members attend this. Dues coming due The membership price has gone up to $230.00 per year. If paid in entirety by June, a $20.00 decrease will be extended.
Sustaining member donations Bill is asking for these donations to be given before April 11 when he has surgery or during the month of May when he will be back. Rotary Youth Leadership Awards One of the young people picked as a candidate for this year s award ceremony was from RFA, Brianna Tebo. She was recognized. Congratulations to her! Longtime Rotarian and our friend Kay De Simone is in the Bethany House at 800 W. Chestnut St. Room 2212 Rome NY 13440 after sustaining a fall at home. It would be a good thing to send her cards. Her spirits are low. Congressional Candidate appearances Make a note of the following dates: May 17, May 31, and June 7. There will be Congressional candidate appearances at these meetings. Tickets at $15.00 each are required to attend these meeting which include lunch. Shelley Gray Stanley Newton John Weber Program Today s program was presented by Dave Gordon who is running for a seat in the NY Congressional District 22. He was removed from the ballot but intends to fight to get back on. Dave Gordon is a graduate of New Hartford High School and currently a resident of Utica. He first attended MVCC studying Liberal Arts and Science and then obtained a degree from Bryant & Stratton College in Insurance.
Dave has been a licensed sales fepresentative for Liberty Mutual, an Oneida County Legislator (2 yrs), and is President and CEO of Partners Trust Insurance Agency. Dave also owns Gordon s tap room Pub located at 413 Burnett St. Utica. His community service includes the Lions Club and Francis J. Bellamy Community Awards Committee. The followinginformation came from Dave s talk and his website which is: http://davegordonforcongress.com The Issues The environment Dave feels that the people should follow the advice of scientists when it comes to protecting the environment. Specifically the extraction of carbon. The Infrastructure Dave s plan calls for allocating a greater amount of financial assistance to: 1. repair and replacing our crumbling bridges. 2. resurface our potholed and sink holed roads. 3. replace our outdated and unfixable traffic lights. 4. provide financial relief to address and fix our crumbling sewer and water lines. Putting people to work on the infrastructure creates jobs and the economy is strengthened. Taxes and Job Creation With a national deficit of 19 trillion dollars, we can no longer afford to ignore the serious economic consequences of runaway spending, disastrous trade deals, and a tax plan that benefits those that need it least. Trade deals such as NAFTA, CAFTA, and TPP encourage corporations to move American jobs to countries that pay lower wages while still selling their products to Americans at the same price. Great for the corporations, not great for America. We must find a way to implement major reductions in spending while still protecting the most vulnerable of our citizens. A new tax plan that more fairly taxes our citizens will in the long run produce greater economic results. Immigration Protecting our borders from those who would do harm against us and our way of life must be a top priority. With proper vetting and establishing stringent guidelines for those seeking refuge in our country is a matter of the greatest national security. If the process is done right, we can feel safe in once again opening our doors and hearts to those who need our help. Healthcare There is no question that the affordable care act needs reforming to benefit people and not the insurance companies with their high deductibles and catastrophic policies. My plan, Healthcare+, increases the current Medicaid threshold and reduces barriers creating an interstate health exchange that produces better rates. We would enact federal oversight requiring a minimum standard of coverage equal to or greater that provided by the policies available in the state with the highest quality of care. Taxes
Induction ceremony Our newest member, Kelly Fleming, was inducted at today s meeting. Kelly is originally from Oswego County. She has been a resident of Rome for 23 years and has raised her children here. Kelly has a Bachelor s degree in Human Services from SUNY Oswego and SUNY Empire State College. She has worked for Mohawk Valley Community Action, HUD as a service coordinator, an Intake Coordinator with REIL, Executive Director of the Rome Art and Community Center, and now MVCC as Service Volunteer Generation Coordinator. The musicians include Sar-Shalom Strong who is a classical pianist who has performed solo and as a collaborative pianist; Dan Evans who has been a professional jazz pianist for over 50 years. 2016 Jazz Concert series At Rome Art and Community Center on May 20. Doors open at 7:00PM and the concert runs from 7:30-10:00PM. Music from the I-90 Bop Connection Band. From the District 7150 April Newsletter Ensure recognition for your Interact clubs Interact clubs are making a positive difference in schools and communities around the world. Leaders of sponsor Rotary clubs and districts should make sure their Interact clubs get the recognition they deserve by verifying that they qualify for a Presidential Citation. First, ensure that the Interact club status is active in Rotary's database by checking the Listing of Club-Sponsored Organizations report in Rotary Club Central. If a sponsored club is not listed, submit the Interact Club Certification Form by 1 March. Then, verify by 15 April that your Interact clubs have qualified for the citation. You'll find a list of sponsored Interact clubs in the Club & District Administration section, under Reports. Also from the April Rotary District 7150 Newsletter Rotary districts mobilize to support survivors of Ecuador, Japan quakes After a series of three earthquakes -- two in Japan and one in Ecuador -- killed hundreds of people, injured thousands, and caused billions of dollars in damage late last week, Rotary members in those regions have created disaster relief funds to help survivors. In Ecuador, the powerful 7.8-magnitude quake that struck Saturday night has killed more than 400 people, with 2,500 injured. Those figures are expected to rise. Rotary District 4400 established a service fund to raise money for relief efforts. Contact District Governor Manuel A. Nieto Jijon for information on how to donate. In Japan, District 2720 created a disaster relief fund after two quakes hit southwestern Japan, causing landslides and killing dozens. Polio update: US. Govt 2016 news flash The United States Congress approved a total of $228 million for the 2016 federal budget to support the global effort to eradicate polio. The funding represents a $10 million increase over the level of funding approved in fiscal year 2015. Rotary s Polio Eradication Advocacy Task Force for the United States leads our efforts to inform the U.S. government and other funding sources of the urgency and benefits of supporting the Global Polio Eradication Initiative.
The Rotarian April 2016 issue Global grant project is growing tall in Korea Paul Engleman Tuesdays at 1:00PM student from the Andong Yeongmyeong School wait to join Rotarians from the clubs in Andong to work in a greenhouse. They plant seeds and harvest lettuce leaves. The leaves are then taken to a restaurant owned by another Rotarian. From the money that they earn, the students invest in more seeds and equipment. The Rotarians are mentors at the school through training projects for students with autism and intellectual and emotional disabilities. The project began in 2014. The students learn crop cultivation, beginning with the fundamentals of growing lettuce indoors and the learn to package and transport crops culminating in selling vegetables to businesses around Andong. The project between the school and the Andong Agriculture Technology Center is supported by a global grant from the Rotary Foundation. The Rotarians funded the construction of the horticultural facilities where the training takes place, financially support the instruction provide by faculty at the school and volunteered as mentors for the students and business consultants and monitors for the project. The aim is to provide students with a foundation to pursue careers in horticulture and gain financial independence. Not only is the program a challenge for the students to learn new things, the grant application process involves learning for the members of the Rotary Club of Andong-Central. Global grants were a new concepts for us and no one in the club had ever done anything like this before. The program has continued beyond the initial grant. Rotary member Sin states that we are working to expand the program beyond students and provide vocational training to adults with disabilities.
