OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY EXTENSION Sandusky County 4-H Family Newsletter 2019, Edition #1 Winter, 2019 Dear 4-H Family, It is time to once again begin thinking about a new 4-H year! Enrollment has just begun and is due to OSU Extension by April 1st for all members. As always, if you have questions or concerns about the 4-H program or any of our activities, we are happy to help. Please remember that your enrollment forms need to be turned in to your advisor or completed online by the date they request. This is so they have time to organize the forms, complete their records, and turn everything into the Extension Office by our deadline. It is important that your advisor has your forms in plenty of time so you do not hold up your whole club. 4-H Summer Assistant Handbook and Calendar OSU Extension is hiring a 4-H Summer Assistant to assist staff with county 4-H Programming and provide general office support during the summer months (Start and end date flexible). Requirements: This is a student position, and applicants must be a college or university student (enrolled Spring 2019), have excellent communication and organization skills, and experience with Microsoft Office software. Previous 4-H and/or other leadership experience highly desired. Hours: 32-38 hours per week, primarily 8-4:30 Mon-Thurs, with some weekend hours, at least one evening per week, and attendance at 4-H Camp June 21-25. On the calendar you can find important dates, times, and locations for most of our 4-H events including deadlines, camp, judging, & the summer showcase. The 2019 Handbook is also posted on the website. This contains basic 4H information and lots of project details. Check out these great resources to get your 2019 4-H experience off to a great start! New Volunteers - Application and Screening Process All potential volunteers with the OSU Extension Sandusky County 4-H Program must complete the steps outlined in the box to the right before beginning their volunteer position. Please note that you cannot begin as an advisor or other volunteer before completing this process. It takes 8-12 weeks (or more) to complete the process when it all goes as expected. Please plan at least that far ahead. Club volunteer applications are accepted through April 1st. Applications received after April 1st will be processed in the fall for consideration in the 2020 year. Steps for Applying to Volunteer: Application - Applications are available at the extension office. Fingerprints & Background Check - All Ohio 4-H Volunteers must complete the fingerprinting and background checks before beginning in their position. Information is in the application packet. Livestock Project Requirements Livestock Requirements Summary Quality Assurance Training by July 1st Jr. Fair Possession, Weight and Tagging Rules (found in fair book and on Jr. Fair summary sheet) Jr. Fair Livestock Entries by July 15th Completed Record Book turned in at the fair There are specific requirements members must meet in order to show livestock projects through the county Jr. Fair Program. These requirements apply to all animals being shown at the fair, except horses. Members with horses please see page 4. Note: All Jr. Fair livestock will be required to check-in on Sunday before fair this year (breeding and market) Quality Assurance Training Ohio State Law requires all livestock exhibitors to attend a county-wide Livestock Quality Assurance Program each year unless you tested out previously. If you are unsure when you need to complete training again, please call the Extension Office. Options for Completing QA: 1. Club Based QA Program: (no cost) This option allows 4-H club advisors to become certified and teach livestock QA at a club meeting. Please ask your club advisor if this will be an option for you, as not all clubs will be offering this. 2. County-Wide QA Meetings: (no cost) April 16, 6:30pm Gibsonburg High School May 6, 6:30pm Clyde High School May 23, 6:30pm Vanguard Tech Center All meetings include the same content & activities. 3. Other Quality Assurance Options (fees may apply) Attend another county s Ohio 4-H QA Program (note that most finish by late May) Attend a state level 4-H QA Program (Beef Expo, Dairy Palooza, Poultry Clinic). Proof of attendance must be submitted to Extension Office by July 1st. Testing out of Livestock QA (optional) Members who are 15 years old or older (4-H age) have an option of taking a written test to test-out of Quality Assurance for the remainder of their Jr. Fair years. The test will be offered by appointment only at the Extension Office in April. The test will not be offered at QA training. In order to increase your chances of passing, you should review information from your project books and/or resource manual. The test includes items such as: Government Agencies / Regulations Details on the Ten Good Production Practices of Quality Assurance. Rules & Ethics Medications & Treatment Records Environment & Handling 3

Horse Project Requirements Each member taking a horse project should receive a county horse program rule book (included in 4-H Horse Council Constitution) and an Ohio 4-H Uniform Rules for 4-H Horse Shows Book. These books contain specific rules for the Horse Program and are VERY important. If you do not have one, please ask your advisor. Dates & Deadlines: April 29 Horse Exhibitor Meeting - OSU Extension Office, 6:30pm **Required for all first year horse exhibitors, includes required Safety &Ethics Training. June 1 Horse Identification Form with current picture due to the Extension Office. Most clubs collect these ahead of time. Ask your advisor if they need them by an earlier date. June 1 Pony Measuring 10am-12pm All ponies must be measured to be shown in pony classes, unless they have a permanent height card from previous years. If in doubt, check with your advisor. July 15 Jr. Fair Horse Entries Due to Jr. Fair Office TBA Stall Set-Up at Fairgrounds, Outstanding Exhibitor Interviews, and Project Book Checks All project books must be brought this day unless arrangements are made ahead of time. All clubs are required to participate in stall set-up. Outstanding Exhibitor Interviews are optional. All members taking horse projects (except Horseless Horse) must belong to a designated 4-H Horse Club. Lego Robotics Kits OSU Extension owns nine Lego Robotics Kits which are available for members to rent for the 4-H project year (April-July). This allows a member to take the project for a fraction of the cost. The cost of rental is a $50 deposit, which is returned to the member when they complete the project and return the kit in good condition. These kits are reserved on a first come first serve basis. No kit can leave the office until a member is officially enrolled in the project. The Robotics projects are recommended for ages 11 and older due to advanced reading level and concepts presented. This year, only youth 11 years and older can rent robotics kits. College Scholarships Sandusky County 4-H Scholarship Applications are due April 1st (with enrollment). There is one application which is then considered for all scholarships given, including the $1,000 Gene Perry Memorial 4-H Scholarship and other smaller amounts. All scholarships are made possible through the Milkshake Stand fundraiser and interest earned on our 4-H Endowment Fund. Current high school seniors enrolled in Sandusky County 4-H for 2019, who will be attending any accredited college or university in Fall 2019 are encouraged to apply. 4-H Shooting Sports Information All project members in Sandusky County are eligible to participate in the Shooting Sports program, all shooting sports projects can be taken through any of our county clubs. There are some additional guidelines and deadlines that are associated with these projects. Please see the handbook page 36 for project listing and additional information. Facts and Notes Guidelines & Deadlines: Certified instructors will teach you everything you need to know! Project books are distributed to 4-H members through their 4-H club. Practice sessions with your discipline are held at Sandusky County Sportsmans Club 3950 SR 600, Gibsonburg Enroll and sign up for projects by April 1st. New members: Attend orientation meeting on Sunday, March 24, 2019 or Monday, March 25, 2019 from 6:30-8:00 pm at the Sandusky County Sportsman Club in Gibsonburg. Here you will complete a mandatory health form/permission slip.
