LAVC College Bulletin January 11-17, 2015 This Issue s News & Events Need to Take the HiSET (High School Equivalency Test)? LAVC CalWORKs Program Offers the HiSET Computer-Based and the Paper- Based Tests; Practice Tests also Offered The LAVC CalWORKs (California Work Opportunity and Responsibility to Kids) Program is now accepting registrations for the HiSET (High School Equivalency Test) test. LAVC is an official HiSET testing site; the computer-based tests will be offered on Tuesday-Wednesday, January 13-14 and Saturday, January 17, and the paper-based test on Friday-Saturday, January 16-17. HiSET is the new alternative to the GED. The CA State Board of Education approved the HiSET for individuals to earn a California High School Equivalency Certificate. It is offered as a paper-based or computer-based test, and covers the following subject areas: Language Arts- Reading & Writing, Science, Social Studies and Mathematics. Both types of tests are offered on a regular basis. The fee for the full test is $150.00 (non-refundable). The practice test will be offered on Fridays, January 23 and 30, or by appointment; the practice testing fee is $10. LAVC to Celebrate the Groundbreakings of the Valley College Gateway and the Athletic Training Facility in a Special Ceremony on January 14 Los Angeles Valley College and the Los Angeles Community College District will hold a ceremony to celebrate the groundbreakings of the new Valley College Gateway building (a.k.a. Community Workforce Development Center) and the Athletic Training Facility on Wednesday, January 14 at 11:30 a.m. in Monarch Square. Following the ceremony, college and District officials will officially break ground on each of the two projects. Light refreshments will be served. View the invitation. Welcome the LACCD Board of Trustees! LACCD will hold its January 14 Board of Trustees Meeting at LA Valley College The Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) will hold its monthly board meeting on Wednesday, January 14 at Los Angeles Valley College; the Public Session of the LACCD Board of Trustees Meeting is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m. in Monarch Hall. Attention Students LAVC s EOPS/CARE Accepting New Students for Spring 2015; Last Day to Apply is January 16! The LAVC Extended Opportunity Programs and Services (EOPS)/CARE is accepting new students for the Spring 2015 Semester until January 16, 2015. EOPS provides eligible students who come from populations that have historically experienced economic and educational challenges with resources and services to help them succeed. To increase access, retention and goal completion, EOPS provides academic, career and personal counseling, one-on-one tutoring, textbook vouchers, workshops, priority registration, progress monitoring and other services. Check the Spring Semester 2015 Open Classes List LAVC Academic Affairs Office has posted an open classes listing for Spring Semester 2015. These regularly updated lists note all the class sections with available seats in Spring Semester 2015; the information is not live, therefore some class sections may be closed by the time students register. LAVC Athletics Update Men s Basketball Wins Against Irvine Valley LAVC Men s Basketball triumphed over Irvine Valley College (68-67) at its January 3 rd game. The Men s and Women s Basketball teams will both play College of the Canyons in Valencia on January 14; the men play at 5 p.m. and the women play at 7 p.m. The Women s Soccer team recently had a successful first

weekend of their high school tournament. This tournament invited high school student athletes on our campus, and was a great opportunity to expose them to our program at Valley College. LAVC s PR Office Can Provide College Departments/ Programs/Services with Publicity Assistance The LAVC Public Relations Office can assist LAVC departments, programs and services with promoting news and events to the campus community and beyond. It can help with posting announcements in the College Bulletin, on the college s electronic marquees, on LAVC s online calendar, on the LAVC News & Events section of the college s homepage, and on LAVC s Facebook and Twitter pages. Simply fill out a PR Request Form for your event or news item, and email the completed form to news@lavc.edu. In addition, the Public Relations Office can help with the creation of Facebook pages for college departments and programs. In the event of an emergency, you will automatically receive an email to your LACCD email address as well as your home phone. If you would like to be contacted by text message or at another email address, you will need to provide that information on the new LAVC Connect Portal. - LAVC EOPS/CARE Now Accepting New Students! LAVC Summer Study Away will hold an information session for the Summer 2015 in Montpellier (South of France) Program on Saturday, January 24 from 12-2 p.m. in Foreign Language 102. If you'd like to study in the South of France this summer (and earn up to 8 units of LAVC credit), come learn more about this month-long study program with AIFS (American Institute of Foreign Study). Have You Given LAVC Your Cell Phone and Alternate Email to Receive Emergency Notifications? LAVC is urging all LAVC faculty and staff to provide emergency contact information to Valley College through the new LAVC Connect portal. During a campus emergency, LAVC will be notifying all students, faculty and staff using a new emergency alert system called Blackboard Connect. This new system has the ability to let LAVC send emergency alert notifications simultaneously to students, staff and faculty by email, voice, and text message. However, students, faculty and staff must provide their cell phone number and/or personal email address (on the LAVC Connect Portal) before LAVC can send text and additional email alerts. Please note: this portal is for emergency notifications only, and will not update any student and employee records with the LACCD. LAVC Mailroom Hours of Operation. The mailroom, which is located in Campus Center (next to the elevator), is always open during normal operating hours of the college for faculty to access their mailboxes. The back room of the mailroom for mail pickup by departments is normally open as follows: - Monday-Thursday from 8 a.m.-12:30 p.m. and 2-4 p.m. - Fridays from 8 a.m.-3:30 p.m. If you need access to the back room and it is locked please go to Reprographics located in Room W101. New Free Resource from CA Community Colleges Chancellor s Office. The California Community Colleges Chancellor s Office has launched a new Web site portal called Sidekick for faculty and staff. This innovative Web site combines six free resources into one site to help you create inspiring and engaging content that meets the needs of diverse audiences, during tough budgets, and ever-changing regulations. From this site, you will be able to access the following six resources: - 3C Media Solutions resources to help you create dynamic video content, podcasts, streaming services, captioning and event coverage - @ONE online training and networking for faculty/staff - Alternative Text Production Center create alternative media products for students - Distance Education Captioning and Transcription caption and transcribe distance education materials

Want Microsoft Office Software for Your Home Computer? Microsoft Home Use Program Now Available for LAVC Employees. LAVC is now eligible to participate in Microsoft s Software Assurance Home Use Program (HUP). The HUP is part of our Microsoft Volume Licensing Program. Through this program, faculty and staff are able to purchase one licensed copy of Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2013 or Office for MAC 2011 (not both) for just $9.95 plus tax. An additional backup DVD is also available with additional cost to cover the costs of duplication, shipping and handling. Under this Home Use Program, you may acquire one licensed copy with two installations on your home computers (e.g. one desktop and one laptop).
