*read M.S. read* PA-TSA Region 8 Conference at Northern Cambria Elementary/Middle School Saturday, February 2, 2019 All NEW and RETURNING Chapters must be officially registered with National TSA by January 15, 2019 to participate in the PA-TSA Region 8 competitions. This is part of the state By-Laws. There will be no exceptions. PA-TSA has a self-imposed deadline of December 1 each year for chapter affiliation. A $75 late fee per school will be imposed after this date. There will be NO on-site registration. Students may drop contests, but no chapter may add contests or add students to contests. Following national and state registration methods, you must register your chapter for team events; but the individuals participating in the events will be declared at contest sign-in and not on the registration form. Be sure to check your registration form carefully before registering your contestants. The registration deadline is 11:59 pm, Friday, January 18, 2019. Registration: $ 8.00 per student. Send the 2019 PA-TSA Region 8 Conference Middle School Chapter Registration Payment Form and payment-in-full to: Jeff Seamans TSA Region 8 1210 Circleville Rd State College, Pa 16803 All checks shall be made payable to PA-TSA Region 8. Payment-in-full MUST accompany the completed 2019 PA-TSA Region 8 Conference Middle School Chapter Registration Payment Form and be In Jeff s Hands by Friday, January 18, 2019. (Yes, send the form, as well. We shall have it as a backup in case of Technical Difficulties.) Registration Problems: should be addressed to GREG WILSON. He will assist you with any issues. Do not contact the state webmaster with registration problems! Food and Beverages: will be available for purchase in the school cafeteria. Breakfast - $2.00 (breakfast sandwich or muffin and the choice of milk or juices) Lunch - $5.00 (Choice of chicken patty sandwich. hamburger, or a slice of pizza, and including season potato wedges; a salad, fresh fruit, and milk or juice). Other snack items will also be available for purchase in both lines. Breakfast will be served from 8:00 to 9:30 a.m. Lunch will be from 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Please remind students that food MUST not leave the café at any time during the event.

ALL food items and drinks are $1 NC-TSA PRINT STATION: There will be a Print Station available for students. Please check the program for this location. $1.00 per sheet for those elite students that completed their LEAP Form on the bus! NC-TSA will be selling pre-order Regional T-Shirts for $8. Advisors will be receiving this information in December and must have money and completed forms to Matt Kline by January 4 th. T-Shirts can be picked up by advisors in the Library during Regionals. There will be a limited number of shirts sold during the conference. LEAP Response will be required for ALL Events including Tech bowl and Problem Solving. PA-ONLY Events will NOT be required to submit a LEAP form. ALL EARLY TURN IN COMPETITIONS SHOULD LABEL THEIR DOCUMENTS WITH STUDENT ID AND NAME OF EVENT. Please send everything together as ONE DOCUMENT (File, Documentation, LEAP) as a PDF (saved as your team / individual number) using ONE METHOD (Google Share, Mail, Email). LEAP SHOULD BE PAGE #1 of DOCUMENTATION (This is for regional competition ONLY). States and Nationals require LEAP to be on a separate sheet. Advisors will receive a shared Google Folder that they can download all their school s entries. Students will be able to VIEW this folder, but cannot modify. ELECTRONIC SUBMISSIONS WILL ONLY BE ACCEPTED FROM ADVISORS! ALL ELECTRONIC SUBMISSIONS WILL BE VERIFIED WHEN RECEIVED (in a shared Google Sheet). NO school name or student name should be identified.

Region 8 Updates: Advisors and students are encouraged to check the Region 8 website periodically for updates to regional conference, Read Reads, competitions, and the program. This can be found at www.patsa.org/conferences/regionals/region-8 ALL FLASH DRIVES SHOULD BE PLACED IN A ZIP-LOCK BAG WITH STUDENT ID AND NAME OF EVENT for all early turn in and dropped off events. Competition Updates for Region 8 Competition CAD Foundations: Northern Cambria Middle School, will provide PC computers with Autodesk software for these events. Questions concerning types of software can be directed to Ed Link elink@ncsd.k12.pa.us If your school uses a different platform and/or software program, you MUST bring your own equipment. Please E- mail Ed Link if you are bringing your own computers. All CADD problems will be judged using the monitor screen only. Students must bring a USB drive to back up their projects while in competition. Coding: will be Test Only Dragster: Dragster specifications change yearly (USE THE 2019 VERSION). PA-TSA Region 8 will supply All CO2 cartridges. 2019 THEME: There are no special specifications or theme for 2019. Essays on Technology: Pollution is defined as the contamination of soil, water and/or the atmosphere with man-made waste. The struggle to control pollution has been on-going; however, increased modern conveniences have contributed significantly to our society s battle to fight pollution. Discuss the ways in which modern conveniences have had a negative impact on pollution. Consider past and current efforts, as well as possible future solutions to control pollution as they relate to each of the following sub topic. Region 8 SUB TOPIC CHOSEN: LAND Must be submitted in PDF format saved with the student ID as the name, by e-mail to Ed Link elink@ncsd.k12.pa.us, No Later Than Monday, January 21, 2019. LEAP FORM should be included in the SINGLE Document (FIRST PAGE). WILL ACCEPT EMAILS FROM ADVISORS ONLY! Electrical Applications:. TEST ONLY Flight: Submit one prebuilt plane with documentation upon arrival. Suggested that plane be protected by a plastic container. Forensic Technology: Will be TEST ONLY with a written SCENERIO for the top 4 semi-finalists. Semi-finalist Team members will need to come together to take this written test. Jr. Solar Sprint: 3 timed runs will be performed in gym. The track length will be approximately 60 feet. Cars must have open eye hooks for competition. 2-AA batteries will be provided. Teams are required to have on their car one solar panel (limited to a maximum output of 3.2 W) as if they were racing outside. Cars without a solar panel and closed eyes will not be raced. PA-Delta Dart: Pre- built planes ONLY NO on site building. Suggested bringing planes in protective container.

PA-Digital Video: Students must bring all video production equipment and laptop for editing footage. Final Video Must Be Submitted on Flash Drive PLACED IN A ZIP-LOCK BAG WITH TEAM AND INDIVIDUAL NUMBERS. Structural Engineering: Prebuilt structures will be dropped off. Structures are not built on site. THEME: Pedestrian Bridge: Review 2018-2019 Structural Engineering Problem Statement found on the TSA National Website (tsaweb.org) REQUIREMENTS FOR STRUCTURAL CHECK-IN: 1. Completed model structure 2. Three-view Orthographic Projection drawing 3. Verification form 4. Assessment form 5. LEAP Response 6. Clear Plastic Container System Control Technology: Advance Notice of the Problem for (level I), will be sent out to the Chapter Advisor(s) by November 13, 2017, by Region 8 Coordinator, Matthew Kline. No on-site construction permitted! All submissions will be quarantined upon arrival. Portfolio: Title Page (with team numbers), Table of Contents, Program, and LEAP Tech Bowl Written (ALL levels) will be given in the morning. Preferred that entire team take test together. KNOW INDIVIDUAL AND TEAM NUMBERS There will be a head-to-head competition for the top four teams ONLY in the afternoon. (Dress code B Professional for oral competition) AUTOMATIC DISQUALIFICATION FOR registering for more than 3 members/ team. Technical Design The problem will be sent out to advisors and posted on the website by December 10, 2018. This is an Early Turn in Event, and needs to be emailed to Ed Link (elink@ncad.k12.pa.us) by Monday, January 21, 2019 Website Design: All entries must be posted to the web, (with the site location (URL) e-mailed to Ed Link at elink@ncsd.k12.pa.us,) no later than Monday, January 21, 2019. Interviews: Students should be prepared for interviews in the following competitive events. Interviews WILL NOT be scheduled unless requested by the judges. Again, competitors in these events should be prepared for the possibility of an interview. Signup sheets will be placed on the door that is listed in the program. LEAP REFLECTION documents will be collected by judges at this time. Ribbons will be awarded for First place, Second place and Third place. Qualifiers beyond Third place will be based on the total contestants per contest. See the on-line Pennsylvania TSA Handbook for details. Project feedback is very valuable to the students. Please encourage students to include the Feedback forms with their projects, binders etc Feedback sheets are available on the Region 8 website. (THIS SHEET IS DIFFERENT from the judge s evaluation sheet). Judges will provide feedback if time permits. Please do not leave without your stuff! All early turn in items can be found in room 107 during project pick-up and drop-off items will be in the room they were dropped off. Please pick these up before awards. Once Award Ceremony begins, all remaining drop-off events and early turn in events will be moved to room 109. Anything left behind will be discarded one week after the conference is completed. Arrangements can be made for picking up or mailing left behind items.
