MARCH 6-7, 2010 SETTING THE SCENE Lehigh welcomes the other 12 EIWA member institutions to Stabler Arena for the 106th EIWA Championships. The EIWA is the nation s oldest wrestling conference, with Lehigh being the historically dominant team in the conference with 195 individual titles and 34 team championships. The Mountain Hawks went 16-3-1 in the dual season and fi n ished seventh in the final dual meet poll. Lehigh finished second to Cornell at last year s tournament and will have the home-mat advantage as the Mountain Hawks look to deny the Big Red in their quest for a fourth straight team championship. Also at stake are 41 automatic berths to the NCAA Championships in Omaha, Neb. FAST FACTS Lehigh has won 34 EIWA team championships, the most of any member school. The Mountain Hawks have won at least one individual title in each of the last ten EIWA tournaments. Lehigh qualified seven wrestlers for the NCAA Championships last year, and has qualified at least five wrestlers in each of the last ten EIWA tournaments. Lehigh is hosting the EIWA tournament for the 23rd time in 106 years. The Brown and White have won the team title on its home mats seven times: 1929, 1948, 1961, 1980, 1983, 2002 and 2006. MARCH 7-8, 2009 Juniors Seth Ciasulli and David Craig captured individual titles to lead the Mountain Hawks to a second place finish at the 105th EIWA Championships at the famed Palestra. Ciasulli upset top-seed Corey Jantzen of Harvard to capture the 141-pound title, while Craig did not yield a single point in taking the tile at 184, as the Mountain Hawk duo led a contingent of seven Lehigh wrestlers who qualified for the NCAA Championships. Lehigh finished second in the team standings with 103 points, 35 behind Cornell, which captured its third straight team title. LEHIGH HEAD COACH PAT SANTORO Coach Santoro enters his second season as the Lawrence White 64 Head Coach of Wrestling at Lehigh. In one-plus seasons he holds a 39-4-1 dual record.last season, Santoro was named EIWA Coach of the Year after guiding the Mountain Hawks to a school-record 23-1 dual record and second place at the EIWA Championships. He spent the previous five years resurrecting the Maryland program, as he went 48-41-1 in duals and guided the Terrapins to an ACC title in 2008. Prior to his stint at Maryland, Santoro spent nine seasons as an assistant coach at Lehigh, including eight as Greg Strobel s top assistant. He was named NWCA Assistant Coach of the Year in 2003 after helping guide the Brown and White to its third EIWA title in four years, and a fourth place finish at the NCAA Championships. Lehigh teams have finished in the top five a remarkable 16 times. MATT ON A MISSION Co-captain Matt Fisk has enjoyed a strong senior season. Fisk has wrestled 23 bouts and has come away with 18 wins including eight bonus victories: four pins, two technical falls and two major decisions. Fisk is ranked 14th at 133 by InterMat and comes off a 26-9 season as a junior. The Wyalusing, Pa. native is a three-time NCAA qualifier and is just the seventh three-time Lehigh wrestling captain in school annals. Fisk owns a 85-36 career overall mark with 44 bonus wins and is a three-time EIWA placewinner (2nd, 5th, 3rd). RANK AND FILE The NWCA released its final set of Coaches Panel rankings on Thursday, February 25. The Mountain Hawks have eight men ranked in the top-33 of those rankings, which play a role in determining automatic qualifier spots for the NCAA Championships. Sophomore Zach Rey is the highest rated Mountain Hawk, coming in at No. 6 at 285. Lehigh has seven men ranked by Amateur Wrestling News, six men ranked by InterMat and five men ranked by W.I.N. Northern Iowa.......................... 113 A FRESH START Freshman Joey Napoli is the latest in a recent string of true freshmen who have earned starting spots in the Lehigh lineup. Since the start of the 2005-06 season, eight true freshmen have started duals for the Brown and White, including Joe Kennedy last season. Napoli made his dual debut at the Northeast Duals in November. He owns a 21-10 overall record and enters this weekend s action having won eight of his last nine bouts will look to match Matt Fisk (2006) and David Craig (2007) as true freshman NCAA Qualifiers for the Mountain Hawks. Fisk reached the EIWA finals in 2006. Craig placed fourth in 2007. Kennedy lost his first match and defaulted with an injury last year.

LET S GO JOE! After starting the season 2-6, sophomore Joe Kennedy has bounced back, winning 13 of his last 18 bouts. More than half of Kennedy s bouts have come against wrestlers currently ranked in the Inter- Mat top 20, including nine matches with men ranked in the top 10. Kennedy already owned wins over sixth-ranked Eric Lapotsky of Oklahoma and eighth-ranked Trevor Brandvold of Wisconsin. The Milford, Pa. native then added a 5-4, two-tiebreaker win over No. 5 Cam Simaz of Cornell in Lehigh s 15-15 tie with the Big Red on January 22. Kennedy went 20-12 as a true freshman last season before defaulting out of the EIWA Championships with an injury. ZACH ATTACK Sophomore heavyweight Zach Rey has been Lehigh s most successful wrestler this season. The New Jersey native, who reached the EIWA Finals and the All-America Round of 12 last year opened this season with 16 straight victories before falling in the Midlands semifinals. Rey went 16-2 in dual meets and went 5-0 to take the title at the Nittany Lion Open in December, defeating Missouri s Junior World Champion Dominique Bradley along the way. Rey went 23-6 last year as a freshman, and is currently the only Lehigh wrestler ranked in the top ten nationally. THE RETURNING CHAMPS The Mountain Hawks boast two wrestlers who claimed major tournament titles last season. Seniors Seth Ciasulli (141) and David Craig (184) both captured EIWA championships to lead Lehigh to a second place team finish. Both men are having strong seasons in 2009-10 as Craig is 18-4 and ranked 14th at 184, while Ciasulli is 18-10 and ranked 15th at 141. Both men currently own 82 career victories. THE (CO-)CAPTAINS OF THE SHIP Seniors Matt Fisk (Wyalusing, Pa.) and Seth Ciasulli (Easton, Pa.) will serve as co-captains for the 2009-10 season. Both wrestlers enter this season as three-time NCAA qualifiers. Fisk becomes just the sixth Lehigh wrestler to captain the team three straight years WHAT S AT STAKE The EIWA received 41 automatic bids to the NCAA tournament when the NCAA announced its qualifier allocations last week. Each qualifying tournament was awarded spots per weight class based on current year data including Division I winning percentage, RPI and a coaches ranking. Under the new system, the number of automatic qualifiers varies in each weight class within the EIWA.
