The origin and objectives of the feasibility study The idea was selected from more than 50 Best Practise projects highlighted in PreWaste projects. The model was the KliMatSmart project in Halmstad, Sweden. The overall objective in Sweden was to utilize a campaign and competition between schools to decrease food waste in school canteens. The objective was to create an operating model for implementing the campaign for reducing the food waste in schools in the Tampere region. The objective is very important, target group is one of the main targets groups and the idea is still quite easy to implement and it is possible to reach the results. 3
Content of the study It is a detailed guide how to start, market, implement and co-ordinate the campaign of food waste reduction in schools in Tampere Region in Finland. Feasibility study of similar projects at least elsewhere in Finland It includes a model how to introduce the campaign at schools to pupils with words and posters. The personnel of the canteens, headmasters, teachers, pupils, parents and media Letters, speech and posters The short and detailed check list helps the co-ordinator when implementing the project. The risk survey and the estimation of working hours help all parties to plan the campaign. 4
Activities implemented The food service managers of the municipalities and the schools were contacted. The plan was made on what, when, how, and to whom to spread information. The plan was implemented. The kitchen staff, teachers, students, student council, parents, and media were involved. The campaign posters were put on the walls of the canteens to remind everyone about the campaign. 5
Activities implemented The campaigns were launched and it was implemented in ten schools in Tampere Region last weeks of October. The results are not yet ready but the personnel of the canteens and the pupils were very enthusiastic. Some schools made the posters themselves and were practising the campaign in advance. 6
What next? The results will be published. The information will be delivered to the homes of the pupils. The press releases will be published for local press. Feedback discussion at schools with the food service managers will be organised. The possible comments will be added to the feasibility study. The feasibility plan will be published. Hopefully new campaigns in different schools will be launched and campaigns will be organised in several schools every year. 7
