History In Jan 2004, the SPIE student chapter at the University of Notre Dame began with three members. Since then, the Notre Dame Student Chapter has been bringing together students of multiple disciplines to come together to share our common interested in optics. Many opportunities have been available for our members to share their knowledge, experience and personal interest. In February 2008, the new officers listed above were appointed. ACTIVITIES OF THE YEAR June 9, 2007 - Summer Barbeque and Social (Indiana Dunes, IN) Every Summer, the Notre Dame SPIE student chapter has an annual trip to lake michigan to enjoy the warm summer weather in northern Indiana. This year was very well attended, more than 10 members showed up at the Indiana Dunes State park for food, sun, and socializing. Joseph Herzog email: jherzog1@nd.edu www.nd.edu/~spie 4

August 25-30, 2007 - SPIE leadership workshop and annual conference (San Diego, CA) The Notre Dame student chapter was awarded the Officer Travel Grant for 2007 and sent two officers to the leadership workshop and the SPIE annual conference in San Diego, CA. Joseph Herzog (2007 Secretary) and Xiu Nancy Xing (2007 Treasurer) both were funded with the Officer Travel Grant to attend these activities. Joseph Herzog was appointed as the travel grant applicant and used the funding to support both him and Nancy. The leadership workshop was very informative and benefited both officers in there personal career goals, but more importantly has inspired more outreach and event ideas for our chapter. Also at the leadership workshop social networks were created that led to the SPIE Midwest / Chicago conference which took place in November of this year. Joseph also presented at the SPIE conference (Infrared reflectivity spectroscopy of optical phonons in short-period AlGaN superlattices), and benefited from the free course at the SPIE conference. He learned much in his free course, the Nanophotonics course taught by Paras Prasad along with the many other complimentary student courses offered during the workshop including how to give good presentation and how to write a journal article. Joseph Herzog email: jherzog1@nd.edu www.nd.edu/~spie 5

November 10, 2007 - SPIE Midwest/Chicago Conference (Northwestern University, IL) After the connection was made with Pao-Tai Lin at the leadership workshop in San Diego. Pao- Tai contacted our student chapter to participate in the SPIE Midwest / Chicago Conference Most of our members attended this conference. We rented a van to bring members to the event and had three members give talks at the conference and three members present posters. Joseph Herzog email: jherzog1@nd.edu www.nd.edu/~spie 6

February 5, 2008 - Welcome Meeting and Seminar (Notre Dame, IN) At the beginning of each year we like to have a welcome meeting to recruit more members. This meeting was probably one of the largest SPIE meeting we have ever had. Over 30 people showed up. At the meeting we gathered contact information from these potential new members. Attendance spanned many departments: Electrical Engineering, Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Environmental Engineering and Geological Science, BioChemistry, and Chemistry. Free food was provided to everyone and probably helped created the large attendance. Also contributing to the high attendance was our guest speaker Dr. Kuno from Notre Dame s Chemistry department. He gave a talk on his research titled An Overview of Solution Based Semiconductor Nanowires. These materials are studies optically and exhibit unique optical properties. March 19, 2008 - EE tea sponsored by Notre Dame SPIE (Notre Dame, IN) Every week the Electrical Engineering Department host a tea which is usually sponsored by the department. Notre Dame s SPIE student chapter decided in order to make the university more aware of the SPIE activities, to host the tea. Food was free for current SPIE member, but nonmembers had to pay for food to defray some of the cost. Also SPIE members from other departments joined the EE in the social event. Joseph Herzog email: jherzog1@nd.edu www.nd.edu/~spie 7

Outreach Five foot tall SPIE posters have been on display all year at in the halls outside the Electrical Engineering department. These posters contain information about the Notre Dame SPIE student chapter including activities and contact information. Joseph Herzog email: jherzog1@nd.edu www.nd.edu/~spie 8

Future Planned Activities Starting this summer 2008: Journal club/informal presentation of labs around campus (monthly) SPIE sponsored EE tea/bbq SPIE field-trip (Michigan or Northwestern) BBQ at Lake Michigan Beach SPIE annual conference (San Diego) poker tournament Fall 2008 welcome meeting, first month back to school continue monthly presentations photo contest Joseph Herzog email: jherzog1@nd.edu www.nd.edu/~spie 9
