KEY MESSAGES Nearly $29 Million in Federal Assistance Approved for Puerto Rico Recovery As of May 30, the FEMA Public Assistance program has obligated $2.2 billion in total funding to the government of Puerto Rico and municipalities for debris removal and emergency protective measures. Emergency protective measures are actions taken to eliminate or lessen immediate threats either to lives, public health or safety, or significant additional damage to public or private property in a cost-effective manner. The following grants were recently approved: For emergency protective measures: o Nearly $89.4 million to the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority o More than $ million to the Puerto Rico National Guard o Nearly $.6 million to the municipality of Yabucoa o More than $.4 million to the municipality of Gurabo o More than $. million to the municipality of Jayuya For debris removal: o More than $3.3 million to the Puerto Rico Department of Sports and Recreation o More than $3 million to the municipality of Guayanilla o More than $2.4 million to the municipality of Dorado o More than $.6 million to the municipality of Santa Isabel An additional $3.3 million was awarded for various smaller projects. The Public Assistance program provides grants to eligible government organizations and certain private non-profit organizations for debris removal, life-saving emergency protective measures and the repair, replacement or restoration of disaster-damaged facilities. The program also encourages protection of these damaged facilities by providing assistance for hazard mitigation measures during the recovery process. The program is funded by FEMA and administered by the government of Puerto Rico. KEY MESSAGES Deadline for Tu Hogar Renace Right of Entry Forms Extended FEMA has granted a 30-day extension for homeowners to complete and submit Right of Entry forms for the Tu Hogar Renace program. The forms, which must be submitted by June 4, allow contractors to do repairs to the properties. Completed Right of Entry forms must be submitted online at https://tuhogarrenace.com/or visit a disaster recovery center by Monday, June 4. Available Housing Assistance Programs in Puerto RicoOverview FEMA ASSISTANCE: FEMA provides various forms of housing assistance to survivors to assist with their recovery. That assistance includes: Leasing vacant units for owners and renters to be used as temporary housing. FEMA pays the rent while utility costs and other expenses are the responsibility of the survivor. Grants are available for home repairs, regardless of location. Rental assistance is available to survivors, regardless of location. LOW-INTEREST DISASTER LOANS: The U.S. Small Business Administration provides low-interest, long-term disaster loans to help homeowners, renters and business owners. Call SBA at 800-659-2955, online at www.sba.gov/disaster or visit a disaster recovery center/business recovery center before the following deadlines: Deadline for Physical Damage Loan: June 8. Deadline for Economical Injury Loan: June 20. VOLUNTARY AGENCIES LEADING AND ORGANIZING REPAIR (VALOR): The VALOR initiative leverages volunteer organizations within Puerto Rico to make emergency, temporary repairs to homes at no charge to the property owner. TU HOGAR RENACE: Managed by the government of Puerto Rico and funded by FEMA, a homeowner s primary residence may be eligible for emergency, temporary repairs to return the home to safe, habitable and functional condition. IMMEDIATE FORECLOSURE RELIEF: The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development extended the moratorium on foreclosures of FHA mortgages until Aug. 6. IMMEDIATE DISASTER CASE MANAGEMENT Under this program, case managers are available to survivors in Puerto Rico and the continental United States to assess disaster-related needs and guide survivors through the FEMA appeals process.
