Division of Health Sciences 101 Cunningham Blvd Booneville, Mississippi 38829 Phone (662) 720-7396/(800) 555-2154 Fax (662) 720-7215 LPN to ADN ADVANCED PLACEMENT PROGRAM Thank you for your interest in the LPN to ADN advanced placement program. The Associate Degree Nursing Program faculty believes each learner is unique and has individual needs. The LPN, as a student of professional nursing, possesses a body of valuable knowledge and skills. Prior learning can be validated and rewarded. Once knowledge and experience have been validated by challenge examination, the LPN can join other ADN students involved in the curriculum and benefit from learning opportunities that will enable achievement of criteria and competencies as an associate degree nurse. Included in this packet is information regarding the process for seeking admission to and advanced placement in the NEMCC Associate Degree Nursing Program. The Northeast Mississippi Community College Associate Degree Nursing Program allows currently licensed practical nurses the opportunity to challenge two nursing courses in the curriculum. These courses are NUR 1118 Nursing Fundamentals and NUR 1229 Nursing Care of the Family. The challenge exams are National League for Nursing s NACE I Foundations of Nursing Examination and NACE I Nursing Care of Childbearing Family/NACE I Nursing Care of Child Examinations (two-part exam must register for both parts on the same exam date if not taken on the same date, must retake both parts of the exam). These exams are computer based exams. Steps in seeking advanced placement: 1. Proof of Licensure: Provide the Division of Health Sciences with information so that your LPN license may be validated (name and social security number). You must hold a current, unrestricted license to participate in the advanced placement option. 2. Application: The challenge candidate must apply to NEMCC and to the ADN Program. The NEMCC application is available at www.nemcc.edu on the Admissions webpage. The ADN application is included in this packet. 3. Dates and Times for Testing: Test Date and Time First Wednesday in March at 12:30 p.m. First Wednesday in June at 12:30 p.m. First Wednesday in September at 12:30 p.m. Testing Registration: 1. Follow the directions in the Student Guide to NLN Testing Brochure listed on the ADN Website for registering for your preferred exam. Go to https://ondemand.questionmark.com/400030/ext/nlntesting/ If you have used the testing site before, you may login with your username and password which you previously created. If you have not used the testing site before, you will need to create an account before you will be able to register make sure to remember your username and password. 1

2. Testing Location and Time: The exams are given in the computer lab in Childers Hall (room 207) on the NEMCC Booneville campus. The exam will begin about 12:30 p.m. and the student may test for up to 3½ hours. Please arrive by 12 noon. 3. Regulations about testing: The NUR 1118 challenge examination must be taken and passed before the NUR 1229 challenge examination can be taken. The passing score on the NUR 1118 challenge examination is 75%. The passing score on the NUR 1229 examination is 70% (average on two portions of the exam). The computer-based exams are immediately graded and scored by the NLN and the scores are available at the end of the testing time. The challenge examination may be taken once and may not be repeated for 1 year. Challenge credit is good for 5 years. 4. Challenge Examinations and How to Prepare: The examinations in use are National League of Nursing products specifically designed for LPNs seeking advanced placement in degree programs. Each examination is about 180 items in length. Nursing process, basic care and comfort, health promotion and maintenance, management of care, physiological adaptation, pharmacological and parenteral therapies-general principles of drug administration, communication, psychosocial integrity, physiology, moral/legal/ethical issues, reduction of risk potential, and safety/infection control are some of the broad topics covered on these exams. See the NLN website for more information as needed. The examination used for exemption of NUR 1118 Nursing Fundamentals is the NACE I Foundations of Nursing Examination. The examination for the second course, NUR 1229 Nursing Care of the Family, is the NACE I Nursing Care of Childbearing Family/NACE I Nursing Care of Child Examination (two-part exam must register for both parts on the same exam date if not taken on the same date, must retake both parts of the exam). Textbooks on a variety of subjects are available in the NEMCC library. Study and review of practical nursing textbooks may prove useful. Review of NCLEX preparation books might also be a resource. 5. Admission: Licensed Practical Nurses who successfully challenge into the program must meet all program entrance and progression requirements. Admission is based on admission to the college and compliance with ADN admission and progression requirements and space availability. Admission is not guaranteed. Applicants seeking admission or readmission to NUR 1229, NUR 2339 or NUR 2449 who meet the admission criteria are rated, ranked, and admitted as space is available in the following order: 1) readmission students, 2) LPN- ADN challenge students, and 3) students transferring nursing credit from another institution. 6. Point of Entry: Should an advanced placement applicant be admitted after having completed all admission requirements and all required courses for progression, entry into the curriculum is as shown: Challenge Exam Passed NUR 1118 only NUR 1118 and 1229 No exam passed Point of entry NUR 1229 Spring (January) NUR 2339 Fall (August) Apply for NUR 1118 regular admission Fall 7. Orientation to the program: Students who enter the ADN program by the challenge process must complete a mandatory orientation session a few days prior to the first day of class the semester they enter. Students may earn college credit for the orientation course (NUR 1101) should they choose that option. Since most students seek full-time enrollment status in order to quality for financial aid (scholarships, tuition reimbursement programs, Pell Grants) there is usually no additional cost for enrolling in this course. 8. Credit Awarded on Transcript: Challenge credit is noted on the official NEMCC transcript with a grade of Z after the student has completed the ADN Orientation Course, enrolled in the clinical nursing course, and paid the transcripting fee. 2

9. Transcripting Fee: The fee for recording challenge credit is assessed at $18.00 per credit hour for credit received. The transcripting fee for those exempting NUR 1118 is $144.00. The transcripting fee for those exempting NUR 1229 is $162.00. (Total for both courses - $306.00.) The transcripting fee is due to the NEMCC business office 30 days after the orientation session is completed and the student enters the appropriate clinical nursing course. 10. Once a student who is an LPN enters the ADN program, he/she may not elect to challenge any additional courses in the curriculum. 11. All rules and regulations in the NEMCC catalog apply to advanced placement applicants. 12. Please schedule an appointment with Camille Beals, ADN Program Director, at (662) 720-7773 or (662) 720-7396 if you have questions or need assistance to meet your advanced placement goals. (Revised 9/2018) 3

Division of Health Sciences 101 Cunningham Blvd Booneville, Mississippi 38829 Phone (662) 720-7396/(800) 555-2154 Fax (662) 720-7215 ASSOCIATE DEGREE NURSING INFORMATION PACKET The Northeast Mississippi Community College Associate Degree Nursing Program is accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN, 3343 Peachtree Road, NE, Suite 850, Atlanta, Georgia, 30326, Telephone Number: 404-975- 5000) and the Board of Trustees of Institutions of Higher Learning, State of Mississippi. It is the purpose of the Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) Program to prepare a competent, caring professional who can attain licensure as a Registered Nurse and enter the workforce. Program outcomes (NCLEX first write pass rate, program completion rate) are available from the Annual Report at www.ihl.state.ms.us/nursing/. NEMCC program data may be compared with that from all schools of nursing in Mississippi. Typically, all graduates who seek employment in health care find such employment. After satisfactory completion of the curriculum, the graduate is awarded the Associate of Applied Science Degree and is then eligible to apply for licensure and clearance to write the Board Examination for Registered Nurse licensure (NCLEX-RN ). Graduates who successfully complete the licensure process and examination will earn the title of Registered Nurse (R.N.). The Mississippi Board of Nursing may refuse to accept the application of anyone based on previous legal issues, as the board reserves the right to determine who is duly qualified for the NCLEX-RN examination and licensure. Included in this packet are: (1) the ADN Program application for admission; (2) estimated expenses related to the ADN program (subject to change); (3) the curriculum plan for the ADN program; and (4) the admission rating scale. After reviewing the information, please complete the ADN application and mail or bring it to the Division of Health Sciences Secretary in Childers Hall (Office 103). If you are not currently a student at NEMCC, you must also make application to the college. NEMCC applications are available at www.nemcc.edu on the Admissions webpage. Application may be made before all requirements are met. Late applications will only be considered if all qualified applicants are admitted and space is available. Please mail completed applications to: Northeast MS Community College Associate Degree Nursing Program 101 Cunningham Blvd. Booneville, MS 38829 2. Meeting eligibility requirements does not guarantee admission to the program. Applicants are rated on the program rating scale (included in this packet- page 5) using a point system based on objective data. Applicants are ranked in order of highest to lowest points by June 1 st for those seeking fall semester admission or December 15 th for those seeking admission for the spring semester. In the event of a tie in rating scores, applicants are ranked in order of CGPA then composite ACT. Each applicant who applies to the nursing program will be notified by mail concerning his/her admission status. It is the student s responsibility to update address changes, email addresses, and telephone numbers in the nursing office and in the college records office. ACT scores must be submitted to the admissions/records office by May 1 st (for fall admission) or November 1 st (for spring admission). Documents validating items on the rating scale must be submitted to the admissions/records office (transcripts, residency) and/or the Division of Health Sciences (licenses, documentation of work experience) by the date of the NEMCC graduation in May (for fall admission) or November 1 st (for spring admission). 3. Transfer students and advanced placement students must meet the same requirements as the college s native students. Students requesting to transfer nursing courses must be eligible for readmission to the previous school of nursing. The final year of nursing coursework is required at NEMCC to meet eligibility requirements for graduation from the NEMCC nursing program. 7

4. Official transcripts of academic work from other colleges must be forwarded to the Office of Admissions when applying to the college. Final transcripts must be sent after in progress work has been completed. NOTE: ACT scores are not recorded on most college transcripts. (Residual ACT scores from other colleges will not transfer to NEMCC). It is the student s responsibility to make sure an ACT composite of 17 or above is on file in the NEMCC Admissions Office. Some students may need to request that a high school transcript with ACT scores be sent to the Admissions Office or may need to contact the ACT organization directly to request scores. 5. Students must comply with requests for physical exam and immunizations; psychiatric evaluation, and/or drug/alcohol screens as indicated and exhibit an acceptable standard of health. Forms, dates, and instructions regarding the physical exam are given to students who are selected to the ADN program. A student s admission status may be withdrawn or deferred if the student fails to meet an acceptable standard of health or if the student fails to comply with the medical requirements. The student is responsible for informing the Health Sciences Division Head concerning health conditions that increase personal risk, i.e. pregnancy, allergies, and/or immune related disorders. 6. Students must comply with the law of the State of Mississippi and complete a criminal background check/fingerprinting as required by Section 43.11.13 of the Mississippi Code of 1972, and House Bill 1077 regarding offenses listed in section 45.33.23(f) of the Mississippi Code. 7. Final admission is contingent on satisfactory documentation of health status and legal eligibility requirements (see number 6 above).
