LUI Che Woo Prize - Prize for World Civilisation 2017 The rapid advancement in technology of today has greatly changed human life. While enjoying the fruits and convenience brought by scientific and technological progress, we must reiterate and safeguard our valuable tradition and moral values, treasure the relationship between people, promote social harmony and reduce conflicts and disputes between countries so as to contribute to the building of a peaceful and loving world. I sincerely hope that this Prize will serve to catalyse the continued development of world civilisation.

Founder s Belief Dr. LUI Che Woo s experience of hardship in his early life during the war paved the way for his later success. He cherishes the belief in giving back to the society from which one has benefited. Hence, he is determined to set up the LUI Che Woo Prize Prize for World Civilisation (hereinafter called the LUI Che Woo Prize or the Prize ). The LUI Che Woo Prize is the first of its kind of international cross-sector award, honouring and recognising individuals or organisations who have selflessly contributed to world civilisation with words and deeds. Aspired to sow seeds of benevolence, the LUI Che Woo Prize does not only recognise the awardees past accomplishments (for having pioneered specific areas of technology, medical care, literature, art, charity and/or peace, aiming to advance sustainable development of world resources, to enhance common well-being and to advocate positive life values) but also encourages them to keep up their momentum and inspire others to build a better world together. Vision Dr. LUI Che Woo s vision of contributing towards a better world is through the establishment of the LUI Che Woo Prize which recognises and honours astounding achievements of individuals or organisations in the promotion of world civilisation. The LUI Che Woo Prize Background Dr. LUI Che Woo firmly believes that he can facilitate the building of a better world by properly recognising those people or organisations, who have made remarkable contributions to the welfare of mankind, and encouraging them to persevere with their efforts in the same direction. Despite being born into an affluent family, Dr. LUI experienced in his early life many of the hardships that people around the globe now face: illness, poverty, conflict, famine and despair. He worked extremely hard to build up a successful business conglomerate. He is resolute in his conviction that mankind can overcome many adversities through selfless dedication and unceasing efforts before moving into the realms of respect and tolerance, mutual understanding and support, harmony and prosperity. Dr. LUI has long been an advocate of returning to the society what is owed. He is also a staunch supporter of traditional values that promote benevolence and peace. These tenets and his deep compassion for humanity have inspired him to establish the LUI Che Woo Prize to extol those individuals or organisations who have selflessly dedicated themselves to the nurturing and enrichment of world civilisation. Objectives The LUI Che Woo Prize aims to recognise and honour individuals or organisations all over the world with outstanding achievements and contributions in respect of the following three objectives: Objective 1: Sustainable development of the world This objective is to recognise an outstanding achievement of an individual or an organisation in maintaining a sustainable ecological balance and natural capital on the one hand and providing for the needs of future generations on the other. Objective 2: Betterment of the welfare of mankind This objective is to acknowledge an outstanding effort of an individual or an organisation to enhance the well-being of the human race. Objective 3: Promotion of positive life attitude and enhancement of positive energy This objective is to honour a model which can be an individual or an organisation of unwavering determination demonstrated in the adoption of a positive attitude and making constructive changes in the face of setbacks, hardship and adversity.

Founder & Chairman of the Board of Governors cum Prize Council Dr. LUI Che Woo is the Chairman of K. Wah Group, one of Asia s largest and leading conglomerates encompassing properties, entertainment and leisure, hospitality and construction materials. The Group has evolved over the past six decades from the first K. Wah Company, which focuses mainly on the supply of construction materials in 1955, into a diversified business portfolio. Rooted in Hong Kong, the K. Wah Group now operates across Mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, Southeast Asia and major cities in the United States with over 33,000 employees worldwide. Dr. LUI was born in Jiangmen, China, in 1929 and settled down in Hong Kong with his family at the age of 4. The adversity and hardship that he experienced and witnessed in his young life planted in his heart the seeds of compassion and selflessness that shaped his future efforts. A long-time philanthropist, Dr. LUI has been particularly supportive of the development of education, medical care, innovative technology, arts and culture, environmental stewardship as well as the promotion of harmonious co-existence. He has donated considerable time and resources to a host of international charitable causes and institutions of higher learning. In recognition of his philanthropic efforts and contributions to society, Dr. LUI has been bestowed with Honorary Doctorates from major universities. Dr. LUI, was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) and was appointed as a Justice of the Peace. His other awards include the Gold Bauhinia Star (GBS) and the Grand Bauhinia Medal (GBM) from the HKSAR Government. Information of the LUI Che Woo Prize There are three Prizes for the three objectives of the LUI Che Woo Prize (each a Prize Category ) every year. If there is no appropriate awardee for any Prize Category in any particular year, no Prize will be awarded for that Prize Category in that year. Each awardee will receive a cash award of HK$20 million (equivalent to approximately US$2.56 million), a certificate and a trophy. Each Prize is awarded to a single recipient (i.e. no sharing of a Prize) who can be an individual or an organisation. The LUI Che Woo Prize 2017 Every year the LUI Che Woo Prize will identify a Specific Area of Focus for each Prize Category and will also consider recognising individuals or organisations with outstanding achievements in the three Prize Categories although their achievements are not directly related to the Specific Area of Focus of that year. Nominators must indicate the Prize Category for which they are proposing a nominee. The Prize Categories are as follows, and the Specific Areas of Focus for the LUI Che Woo Prize 2017 are indicated below: Prize Category 1 : Sustainable development of the world (Sustainability Prize) Specific Area of Focus : Prevention of Climate Change Prize Category 2 : Betterment of the welfare of mankind (Welfare Betterment Prize) Specific Area of Focus : Alleviation of Poverty Prize Category 3 : Promotion of positive life attitude and enhancement of positive energy (Positive Energy Prize) Specific Area of Focus : Promotion of Harmony among Diverse Groups Outstanding achievements of individuals or organisations falling within any of the Prize Categories but outside the Specific Areas of Focus might still be considered. Eligibility of Nominees Individual nominees must be living on the date of their nomination. If an awardee dies before he or she has received the LUI Che Woo Prize, then the LUI Che Woo Prize may be presented to posthumously to his or her estate. Each nomination will be considered, and each Prize will be awarded, regardless of an individual s age, gender, race, sexual orientation, disability, nationality, religion or belief or, in the case of an organisation, its place of establishment. Directors and officers of the Prize Company, members of its Prize Council, Prize Recommendation Committee and Selection Panels are not eligible to receive the LUI Che Woo Prize.

Nomination Process Only invited nominations will be accepted; uninvited nominations and self-nominations are ineligible. Nominators must decide which Prize Category is the most suitable for the nominees. Nominations of candidates must include all the information required by the nomination documents provided by the Prize Company. A nomination is valid only if it is received by the Prize Company on or before the deadline. There is no entry fee. The Prize Company may use any intellectual property contained in a nomination application for the purposes of assessing nominations and awarding Prizes. Selection Process Prize awardees are selected after a three-stage review process: One of the three Selection Panels will assess the nominations received in each Prize Category, with assistance from experts in the relevant fields as may be required. Each Selection Panel will recommend to the Prize Recommendation Committee a shortlist of nominees in its Prize Category. The Prize Recommendation Committee will consider the nominations submitted to it by the Selection Panels. The Prize Council will consider the Prize Recommendation Committee s recommendations. The Prize Council may not necessarily recommend a nominee in respect of the Specific Area of Focus of a Prize Category, but can recommend an outstanding nominee with achievements and contributions in the Prize Category generally. The decision of the Prize Council will be final and the Prize Company will endorse the Prize Council s decision. No feedback on nominations will be given by the Prize Company.
