SECTION 1 - JOB DESCRIPTION INTRODUCTION HOSPITAL SERVICES CONSULTANT RADIOLOGIST (with an interest in breast imaging) This job description is intended for a general whole-time with a sub-speciality interest in breast imaging, based at the Princess Elizabeth Hospital. Wide ranging clinical radiology experience however, is desirable. The duties of a whole-time Consultant are regarded as requiring substantially the whole of a Consultant's professional time. Consultant contracts are based on a working week of ten programmed activity sessions (PAs). A session is notionally regarded as a period of 4 hours. The Medical Director and Clinical Lead for Radiology are responsible for the agreement of this job plan. GENERAL PROVISIONS You will be expected to work with HSC managers and professional colleagues to ensure the efficient delivery of clinical services and will be responsible along with consultant colleagues in providing a medical contribution to management. You are expected to observe the agreed policies and procedures, drawn up in consultation with the profession on clinical matters, and to follow the policies, standing orders and financial instructions of the HSC. You will be expected to follow personnel policies and procedures. All medical and dental staff employed by HSC are expected to comply with Health and Safety policies. ISLAND PROFILE Guernsey is part of the Channel Islands and an independent jurisdiction comprising the island of Guernsey itself, Alderney, Sark and Herm. The main industries are finance, hospitality, light industry and agriculture. The climate is mild and the region is favourable. HOSPITAL PROFILE The Princess Elizabeth Hospital has approximately 200 beds, and provides in patient care for the residents of the Bailiwick of Guernsey. Secondary health care is provided by a group of medical specialists under contract to HSC.
Out-patient services are provided in a separate facility managed by the Medical Specialist Group (MSG). Services provided in Guernsey are as follows: Surgery including breast, vascular, colorectal and biliary Urology Orthopaedics Ear, nose and throat Ophthalmology Obstetrics and gynaecology Medicine - gastroenterology, endocrinology, neurology, respiratory disease. Medical oncology Geriatrics Dermatology Psychiatry Dental surgery Visiting clinicians provide rheumatology, haematology, paediatric orthopaedics and nephrology. The population of the Bailiwick of Guernsey is approximately 65,000, which includes Alderney, Herm and Sark. There are seasonal increases in population. DEPARTMENT PROFILE The Radiology department at the Princess Elizabeth Hospital provides a comprehensive imaging service to the Bailiwick of Guernsey. We are a small, friendly department, with a good team working spirit. The department was purpose built in 1991. We have full digital breast imaging, provided in a dedicated breast services unit opened in October 2013, and work closely with the local surgeon with sub-specialty interest in breast and oncoplastic surgery and a consultant nurse specialist in breast care. The department undertakes approximately 50,000 examinations per annum and provides a service to primary and secondary care and visiting clinicians. There is a private wing within the Princess Elizabeth Hospital, and provision is made within the Radiology department for the examination of private in patients and out-patients electing for private care. There is a satellite department in Alderney, with provision of a plain film service and ultrasound. All images produced in Alderney are stored on PACS with reporting being performed in Guernsey. Visiting sonographers from the Princess Elizabeth Hospital currently provide the ultrasound service in Alderney.

Mobile Units Image intensifier Cios Connect installed September 2016 Mobile Siemens Mira installed November 2015 Mobile Agfa DR100 installed November 2016 DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES In conjunction with Consultant colleagues to provide an effective diagnostic imaging service, with responsibility for the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of illness, and the proper functioning of the department. The post is for a general Radiologist with a comprehensive range of imaging expertise, to support the general service needs of the department. Experience in cross sectional imaging, including CT, MRI and ultrasound is required. Special interests are encouraged to complement those already held in the department and to support service development. The current post holder provides breast imaging services and a subspecialty interest and experience in this field is essential. The post holder will work as part of a team of 5 consultant radiologists. The post will include out-of-hours work and participation in the Consultant on call rota, on a 1 in 5 basis with prospective cover. The Job Plan for this post comprises a total of 11 programmed activities (PAs) per week (please see section 2), agreed by the Clinical Lead and the Medical Director. To co-ordinate annual leave with Clinical Lead to ensure adequate medical cover at all times. Urgent clinical work occurring in the absence of a colleague will need to be covered by mutual agreement with other medical staff in the speciality.
The post holder will actively participate in clinical audit and clinical governance, and undertake continuing medical education to permit Royal College of Radiologists reaccreditation. The post holder must hold full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC), hold a license to practice, and be on the Specialist Register as a radiologist. They shall also participate in annual appraisal, and develop a suitable portfolio for revalidation with the GMC. There is a quality assured appraisal service for all secondary care doctors in Guernsey which includes the use of a web based personal portfolio and access to mandatory training modules. Each has a generously sized single office with a dedicated double monitor workstation, a separate RIS monitor with full desktop integration, and a personal computer. All office computers have internet access for occupation related information. Secretarial and clerical support is available for all s. Voice recognition dictation is in use. WORK PROGRAMME The above duties are supported by a work programme, which includes a weekly timetable of fixed commitments. The programme relating to this post will be agreed with the post holder and a specimen programme is attached as Section 2. JOB PLAN Once agreed, job plans are forwarded to the Chief Officer for approval on behalf of HSC. If it is not possible to agree a job plan, either initially or at an annual review, an appeal may be made to HSC by the successful applicant once they have taken up this post, and may alter, by mutual agreement.
