Elder-friendly Design Campaign Supportive Work-team for Active-ageing Network (SWAN) Vocational Training Council Background According to the Hong Kong Population Projections 2012-2041, the population of elderly persons aged above 65 in Hong Kong will increase from 0.98 million in 2012 to 2.56 million in 2041, comprising 30% of the total population of 8.47 million. According to a study by Hong Kong Silver Market Alliance in 2010, elderly people will spend one-third of their income on leisure and travelling. If each of them spends $3,000 per month and the expenditure will be 7.5 billion per month and 90 billion per year. Many leisure and travel sectors over the world have foreseen and identified the soaring spending power of the silver hair market and formulated strategic plans to provide new products and services well-catered for the needs of the retired elderly. Therefore, a cross-disciplinary project in collaboration with Hospitality Industry Training and Development Centre (HITDC), Design, Information Technology and Hotel, Service & Tourism Studies (HoSTS) Disciplines, Model Hotel Suite for Silver Hair Market (Model Suite), has been launched by VTC to address the needs of the increasing senior travellers. A framework of the model suite will be set out at T-Hotel of Hospitality Industry Training and Development Centre (HITDC). Model Suite, a pioneer of its kinds, aims to below: 1. demonstrate to hospitality industry the needs of senior travellers; 2. serve as a model of the facilities required when serving the elderly; and 3. establish a training suite to enhance students and public awareness, and train up the students relevant skills and knowledge to meet the challenges and opportunities ahead across different disciplines of studies. Elder-friendly Design Campaign An Elder-friendly Design Campaign (the Campaign) 1 is organised under Model Suite with participation of students from the mentioned disciplines in designing the hardware or /and software for the model suite or travelling packages to cater for the accommodation and the travelling needs of senior citizens. The best designs in the respective discipline will be adopted and realised at the model suite at T-Hotel. Objectives of the Elder-friendly Design Campaign 1. To provide opportunities for students across discipline to practically apply the knowledge and skills learnt in lessons; 2. To enhance students understanding of elderly s physical and psychological needs when designing hardware and software for the elderly; 3. To enrich students knowledge on the great potential of silver hair market; and 4. Submission of proposal Each team/individual participant is required to submit a proposal and the completed entry form with relevant materials like presentation boards to the Internal Departmental Judging Panel for review by 14 May 2015. The finalists recommended by Internal Departmental Judging Panel are required to submit the proposal and the completed entry form with relevant presentation materials to SWAN by 21 May 2015 and present their proposal to the Panel of Judges in person on 29 May 2015. Participants are allowed to illustrate their ideas by various means like prototypes, photos and PowerPoints etc. within a time limit of 5 minutes. Design Campaign Topic Learning outcomes Purpose 20 May 2015 Appendix Hotel Suite Design in T Hotel 1. Examine Recreational Design project by means of research and study; 2. Analyse the recreational context and environment of designated sites for the project through appropriate surveys, visits, study and research; 3. Justify the options of the form and space configuration by means of studying models and formulate the articulation to the consolidated scheme for the recreational project fulfilling the goals, natural habits and psychological needs of the users within the interior environment; 4. Employ appropriate colour, material and texture systems to support the recreational design solution and to enable appropriate ambience for the design; 5. Design and effectively communicate with appropriate means of visual communication the principles of remodelling existing buildings; and 6. Integrate, collaborate consolidate, and effectively present and communicate, both visually and verbally, the concept beyond such recreational design projects. To propose a hotel suite design in T hotel for silver hair market. The project aims on reinterpreting the functions and values of recreational space for silver hair market. Through exploring design possibilities, students are required to provide new insights to modern trend recreational space. 4
HoSTS Campaign Topic 1 Learning outcomes Purpose Details Elderly Fitness Centre in T Hotel 1. Design facilities for elderly fitness in hotel setting to allow cognitive, social and motor development among the elders; and 2. Identify fitness and exercise participation for the elders with consideration in risks management, social and ethical concern. Every 10-12 students of Higher Diploma in Sports Administration (HT114004) and in Sports Coaching (HT114005) form a working group to prepare a presentation and a written proposal for establishment of a fitness centre for the elderly guests of T Hotel. The proposed fitness centre should be suitable for the physical conditions of elderly and is able to be accommodated in hotel operation. Each group is required to prepare an oral presentation with powerpoints and/or audio visual materials (relevant figures, diagrams, charts, drawings, photos, short video and other appropriate materials) for the project. Also, every group is required to submit a written proposal including the followings: Justifications for the provision of elderly fitness facility 1. Characteristics of the elderly; 2. Benefits of fitness exercises toward the elderly; 3. Global and local development of the elderly fitness; and 4. the market, trends and economic value of the elderly fitness; Facility planning and operation for the proposed elderly fitness centre 1. Basic requirements of fitness facility needed; 2. Identification of fitness equipment and other auxiliary facilities; 3. Estimation of facility capacity and usage of equipment; and 4. Design and layout plan for the fitness centre; Judging Criteria Risk management and activity organization for the elderly fitness centre 1. Suggested activities and programs to be offered; 2. Analysis of dangers and risk factors for the fitness centre; and 3. Strategies to address risks and safety management for the facility and the programmes; 1. Trace the origin of spa to highlight how its present evolution has shaped the spa industry today; 2. Explain the healing properties of water and the means to apply them to promote the health of the body; and 3. Distinguish the most common spa therapies, their backgrounds and differences for matching client needs with appropriate therapies. To write a proposal for an established hotel spa that caters to the needs of senior hotel guests specifically. Through this proposal students will have an opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge in spa operations and management. Each group is required to write a spa proposal for the T Hotel that provides treatments, activities and programmes for senior hotel guests. The proposal should include the followings: The Spa Industry: To give a description about the spa industry in the region in general and Hong Kong in particular: 4. A brief description of the spa industry in the region; 5. An introduction to the Hong Kong spa industry; and 6. A brief description of the spa in the T Hotel. Hotel Spa Attractiveness Needed: To perform a research on issues related to elderly health and wellness as well as to discuss needs and wants of senior hotel guests regarding hotel spas: 1. Interrelationship of wellness, health and ageing; and 2. Needs and wants of senior hotel guests in hotel spas. Treatments, Activities and Programmes: To state the types of treatments, activities and programmes the spa of the T Hotel will feature: 1. Types of treatments the spa will offer to seniors; 2. Types of senior wellness / health activities and programmes; and 3. A proposed menu with prices for the offered treatments, activities and programmes. 6
