Help Wanted in Oregon Results from the Fall 2018 Job Vacancy Survey

Oregon businesses reported 60,500 vacancies in fall 2018. Oregon Job Vacancies, Fall 2018 Vacancies 60,508 Average Hourly Wage $18.77 Full-time Positions 79% Permanent Positions 85% Requiring Education Beyond High School 35% Requiring Previous Experience 58% Difficult to Fill 55% The summer vacancy total declined slightly (-5%) compared with summer 2018, and rose by 11 percent compared with fall 2017. A typical job vacancy tends to be for a full-time, permanent position.

Unemployed Persons Per Job Vacancy Widespread hiring and low unemployment has kept the unemployed-to-vacancy ratio near a record low. Businesses reported strong hiring in several industries. Leisure and hospitality businesses such as restaurants and ski areas reported strong seasonal hiring. Construction vacancies bounced back after two relatively weak quarters in the vacancy survey data, and had the secondhighest vacancy total by industry.

The top occupations with large numbers of vacancies reflected holiday hiring trends. The average starting wage for job vacancies averaged $18.77 per hour in fall. Clackamas and the East Cascades region reported relatively high numbers of job vacancies.
