New Opportunities in Your Local Section Please contact us through the local section email if you are interested in either of these opportunities. Networking with Local Industries Local industries have a unique opportunity to make a difference in the careers of the future professionals in the section. Networking is not only a great way to build friendships but also to facilitate mentoring of young chemists that are either still in school or just starting their career. This upcoming semester we are trying to reach more industries in our section. Please contact us if you are part of the local section working in the industry sector and would like to be involved or listed as an affiliate of the local section. ECI Local Section Awards To encourage excellence in scholarship and service throughout our local section, we will be accepting nominations for awards during the Spring 2016 semester. There will be four different nomination categories: (1) high school teacher, (2) high school student, (3) middle school teacher, and (4) local section member. Send nominations to our local section email with a 1-page letter of support as well as a concise description of the qualifications and accomplishments of the nominee. Deadline: April 1, 2016. Local Section Committees and Affiliated Organizations UIUC Women Chemists Committee (WCC) The ECI Women Chemists Committee at UIUC was founded in the fall of 2005 to promote the development of women in the chemical sciences. With the support of ECI and the UIUC Chemistry Department, they plan events that include professional and social opportunities that benefit graduate students, faculty, staff, and undergraduates. http://www.chemistry.illinois.edu/about/diversity/wcc/ EIU Women Chemists Committee (WCC) The EIU WCC is a group of female students, faculty and staff members that participate in mentoring, professional development, service, community outreach and networking/social activities. For more information, email rpeebles@eiu.edu. Younger Chemists Committee (YCC) YCC advocates for and provide resources to students, early-career chemists and professionals in the chemical sciences and related fields. YCC also addresses specific issues facing younger chemists within ACS and serves as their voice in ACS. https://www.facebook.com/eci.ycc Undergraduate Student Chapters American Chemical Society student chapters are organizations for undergraduate chemical science majors. Members participate in a wide range of programs and activities that enhance their college experience and prepare them for successful careers. UIUC: http://www.scs.illinois.edu/~acs/ EIU: http://castle.eiu.edu/~acssaeiu/ High School Chemistry Clubs The overarching goal of this ECI Local Section and UIUC Student Chapter outreach program is to bridge the gap between high school and college education, particularly in chemistry. Schools currently participating: Urbana High School Iroquois West High School University High School The Parkland Science Club (PSC) The PSC promotes the study of different disciplines of science and to organize fun activities and events related to science on the campus. www.facebook.com/parkland-science-club- 1464094003870901 3

Additional volunteers are needed on the day of each tournament to proctor and grade the events. Events include "CrimeBusters"/"Forensics" (identifying unknown powders and solving a mystery CSI-style), "Chemistry Lab" (standard general chemistry experiments and written questions related to kinetics and gases), "Food Science" (lab tasks and written exam related to milk and dairy products) and "Protein Modeling" (utilizing computer visualization and physical models of protein structures). If you're able to volunteer for either tournament, please contact Amy Nicely at amy.nicely@illinoisolympiad.org for more information. AbbVie Tour UIUC Undergraduate Student Chapter Each semester, the Student Chapter hosts a tour in order to reach out to the student community at UIUC and bring them into the larger picture of chemistry that ACS represents. Those that attend are provided with information about the opportunities for the advancement of their careers after they graduate. By taking a tour of a large industrial plant, members get an inside look on possible careers, as well as potential networking opportunities with the company. 5
