BUT, the STEM disciplines of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics are typically closed to intensive exploration until a student reaches college. Why wait? Science fairs can open the door to young minds eager to explore using the mentor:student relationship that has trained and inspired the world s scientists and mathematicians for centuries. Why wait? Changes in education law, increases to school budgets, or floods of federal grants could make a difference. But why wait? Our Science Fair captures the passion and ability of young minds now, and catalyzes a sustainable, community-based network of committed adults to help eager youth become the next generation of scientists and engineers. These rising STEM professionals will improve the region s quality of life and meet the challenges of the 21 st century. We can do it NOW! Dr. Nelson Ying Tri Region Science and Engineering Fair trsef@verizon.net www.trsef.org 315-468-1025 Dr. Ying s Challenge [Why do I sponsor] science competitions? Because I believe that knowledge in this world is important. But of all the knowledge that we can learn, ethics and science form the foundation knowledge. Everything that is beneficial to this world, all the luxuries that we enjoy, are all due to science and technology. And the very fact that human beings are still on this earth is because we have ethics. All other knowledge is icing on the cake. I also believe in bringing a better life to most people in the world. [S]cience and technology can bring better things to everybody. A higher ride raises all boats. Indeed it takes a village to raise a child and it takes many, many children together to make a better world. That ia why I made my challenge grant. I invite everybody parents, teachers, industries, students to accept my challenge, to become a part of our team to make this world better. And best of all, every dollar that you give doubles the effort, because I am putting in my dollar! Statement made by Dr. Nelson Ying at a Ying TRSEF press conference hosted by Buffalo City Schools superintendent Dr. James Williams Our ISEF Finalists 2007 Kayleigh Sullivan and Song Qu Orange County Jimmitti Teysir and Josh Vekhter Erie County 2006 Chris Olsen and Milan Satcher Orange County 2010 (L>R) William Chauvin (Orange County), Phoebe Kurtzman (Rockland County), Fiona Hennig and Rasheen Powell (our first ISEF Team, Erie County) Grand Award = International Finalist Through our affiliation with Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF), our Grand Award winners advance as Finalists to ISEF. Dr. Ying s sponsorship of the Ying TRSEF guarantees that we can continue this crucial partnership and send students to Los Angeles in 2011. Dr. Nelson Ying Tri Region Science and Engineering Fair trsef@verizon.net www.trsef.org 315-468-1025 New Awards for 2010 New Awards for 2010 Two Ying Scholars receive $1000 each In 2010, Dr. Ying launched our Ying Scholars Competition. Our senior level students compete for two $1000 scholarships. As they register for the Ying TRSEF, they can choose to submit a written paper for a first round review of their research. Selected Ying Finalists come to Syracuse for an oral defense before a panel of STEM PhD s. The Ying Finalists also compete in the Fair Day judging rounds for Ying TRSEF Fair and Special Awards. County Science Champions Judges identify a County Science Champion from each county. The highest scoring student who is not already a Ying Scholar receives $100! Dr. Ying seeds $500 for five awards. We need at least 19 more $100 sponsors to cover every county and this year we also had two TEAMS who won, so the figure grows! Will you be the next sponsor... or will students from your county believe that no one is proud of their achievements? Grand Award winners are also Ying Scholars It is Dr. Ying s challenge grant that sends our Grand Award winners on an all-expenses-paid trip to the six-day Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF). At ISEF, they celebrate with 1600+ other Finalists from nearly 60 nations, participate in a Q&A session with a panel of Nobel Laureates and compete for nearly $4 million in prizes and scholarships! Will any of these students be declared County Science Champions next year? They could, IF we have enough sponsors to cover every county.
